This book explores the importance of mathematics&nbsp;(analysis, algebra, topology, probability, and inferential statistics) within the history and development of economics. It offers a long-term perspective on the links between mathematics and economics, taking into account the influence of historical events, to create a genealogy of quantitative economics. Starting with Aristotle and the early economic pioneers, such as Petty, Isnard, Cournot, Ricardo, Marx, and Walras ,the development of economics over many centuries is charted, including marginalism, general equilibrium, neoclassical synthesis, linear economics, game theory, econometrics, financial theory, and artificial intelligence.This book provides insight into an overlooked part of economics’ history to create a new framework for economic analysis. This new study instead argues that they made a significant contribution and laid the foundations for the regions created in France after 1945. The key areas which they identified: transport, power generation, and technical education, have remained the preoccupations of regional governments in France and elsewhere to this day. The author covers the needs of commerce and industry, but also agriculture and tourism. Based on fresh research using a wide range of primary sources, this book will appeal to economic historians, economists, and geographers, as well as historians with a particular interest in France.
Terence Cudbird gained his doctorate from the University of Oxford in 2020 and is an Associate Member of the History Faculty there. He published an article on the French regions in French History in 2023.

The Economics of Kindness

This book redefines ideas of liberty and equality for the modern world. After exploring the origins of liberalism and the role of natural liberty as a principle of social organisation, liberty and equality are reconceived as complex and continuous notions that need support from social institutions to function. Such an approach allows an investigation of the connection between alternative conceptions of liberty and equality, diverging principles of social organization, and the assessment of the coherence and consistency of the entire programme.
 By rejecting the existing notions underpinning traditional liberalism, a new framework for socio-liberalism is presented where there is a clear distinction between the social and the private domains. The former is based on value-hierarchy and the latter is guided by alternative principles of economic organisation. The role of education, and the need for institutions to support individual development and sovereignty, are highlighted as a way of enabling this new structure of liberal society where inevitable inequalities are made explicit, contained, and used to serve the public interest.
 Amos Witztum is a Professor of Economics. For many years also a Research Associate at the
