The Fashion Book is designed to be a one-stop textbook and reference for students of fashion and textile studies in the English-speaking world. This inter-disciplinary introduction to theories, debates, methodologies and case studies in fashion studies will suit students in degrees, modules and majors including cultural studies, art, communications/media, cultural geography, anthropology and cultural history.

The Fashion Book is an exciting, readable and comprehensive, all-in-one resource for students of fashion across the English-speaking world. It is designed as an introduction to fashion studies that can be used in a range of fashion courses from fashion studies degrees to fashion modules, and majors in disciplines including cultural studies, cultural sociology, cultural geography, communications and media, anthropology and cultural history. The book will present current writings and research on major topics debates in fashion studies drawing on the literature on fashion theory and incorporating many global case studies (as easy-to-read boxed material). Graphs, tables and diagrams will add texture to the written material. Approximately 200 colour images are planned to generously illustrate the historical and the contemporary tapestry of fashion. A dedicated interactive website will complement the text and ensure that students are in touch with the latest news, issues and trends.

His friends called him V. He used to feel intimidated by the fashion world but he got over it. He designed his first Louis Vuitton collection in three hours. He cared more about pageantry than clothes. He wasn’t precious about his ideas. He sometimes made work and added the meaning later. He contradicted himself all the time but he saw no problem with that. Fashion for him was one big art project, and also kind of a joke. He believed in God. He believed in logos. He thought insisting on novelty in fashion was farcical; a critique meant to keep people like him out. Some nights when he couldn’t sleep he wondered how people would remember him once he was gone. Virgil Abloh, who died unexpectedly in 2021 at age 41, defied categorization. Born in Rockford, Illinois to Ghanaian immigrants, he learned to sew as child, studied civil engineering in college and then architecture in graduate school. He entered the world of fashion sideways, without formal training, upsetting the status quo first with the stratospheric success of Off-White and then with his appointment as Artistic Director of menswear at Louis Vuitton. He pierced the divisions between pop culture and couture, fashion, music, and design, and was as influenced by Marcel Duchamp and Mies van der Rohe, Albert Murray, Rammellzee, Drake, DJ Benji B, Kylie Jenner, and Bella Hadid, as by the storied histories of high fashion houses. He was fascinated by the commodification of culture and the dialectic between appropriation and reappropriation, between ‘high’ and ‘low’. He admired the ready-made and the imitative for the way in which they force you to think carefully about the context in which they were created. He felt originality was a sham, and saw clearly the way Fashion, with a capital F, depends on the policing of who is allowed the mantle of ‘genius’. The establishment bridled at his approach even as they celebrated his work. He, in turn, understood that people wanted him to be a symbol, to fit an idea of the Black Designer, but he refused any kind of easy definition. Here, in Work in Progress, is a blueprint for a way to live, a conversation between friends, a challenge to any idea of black and white thinking. A portrait of an iconoclast, WORK IN PROGRESS takes us inside the mind of one of the most visionary and transformational designers of our time.

Tracing the rich tradition of Chinese patchwork art in domestic and rural spaces, from its ancient origins to its contemporary manifestations Patchwork design has a long history in China, dating back almost two thousand years to the arrival of Buddhism in the region. Across millennia, a thread can be followed from spiritual practitioners embracing patchwork textiles as a visual expression of their beliefs to patchwork's use in secular culture, where it was prized for its protective powers. Eventually, patchwork became a form of domestic decoration--and an outlet for artistic ingenuity--that continues in some areas of China's countryside today. Chinese Patchwork explores the creativity of 20th- and 21st-century Chinese makers who stitch fabric remnants into functional, decorative and auspicious articles for use in their homes and by their families. These objects display a wide variety of designs, patterns and techniques, and reflect both local tendencies and the individual aesthetics of the makers. Through a series of scholarly essays, museum curator Nancy Berliner illuminates the tradition and history behind the art form, as well as its links to Chinese visual culture; these texts are illustrated by stunning reproductions of lively and colorful patchwork examples. Interviews with contemporary makers offer readers firsthand insight into the practice and its intricacies.
