The Living and the Dead

Palgrave Advances in Sex Work Studies

Digital Technology and Sex Work

An introduction to the study of crime, criminal conduct, and the judicial systems created to address aspects of the Foundations of Criminology: Crime, Theory, and Justice The main criminological theories that explain why crime happens are examined in this text, together with patterns and trends in crime in various communities and an analysis of the ethical, legal, and social aspects of justice.

In addition to modern concerns including cybercrime, violent crime, white-collar crime, victimization, and policy reform, students are exposed to classical, biological, psychological, and sociological viewpoints. The book, which places a strong emphasis on critical thinking, links theory to practical application and challenges readers to consider how courts, corrections, and law enforcement function in larger social contexts.

Foundations of Criminology, which is both academically demanding and easily accessible, gives individuals the conceptual skills they need to comprehend crime in contemporary society and gets them ready for further study or jobs in criminal justice and related subjects.

Crime, Theory, and Justice

Foundations of Criminology

A “genuinely transcendent” (The New Yorker) portrait of the poet as an office worker, plumbing the depths of the spiritual gulf between art and work. It’s the summer of 2017 and D__, a poet working by day as a copywriter at a retail start-up, can’t dispel a creeping sense of dissolution on the horizon. Whether it’s the company’s new twenty-four-year-old CEO, the growing distance between D__ and his longtime girlfriend, or a mounting sense of unreality in the wake of the first delirious months of the Trump administration, there’s a sense that things are speeding towards collapse—and that they’ve perhaps been unraveling for some time. Borne along on these ambivalent straits, D__ begins to keep a notebook, filling it with everything: scenes from his own life, dreams, poetic fragments, stoned revelations, and broadly defined moments, both real and fictional, that he calls parables: attempts to learn from the underlying schedule of the universe, some music of the spheres that, if heard correctly, might help him finally tie together the disparate threads of his life, his poetry, and his labor. As the notebooks fill up over the course of two years, season by season, D__ circles a series of perennial questions about art and work, capturing in the process the unique absurdism of the gone-but-not-forgotten era of office culture between the Great Recession and the COVID-19 pandemic. “Comic and profound, an intricate collage of a novel that plants itself in exhausted earth and, somehow, flourishes” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review), The Copywriter is a story following the absurd paths that office work can take us on and the subtle ways in which seemingly mindless labor can determine our fate.

Contributions to Economics

Empirical Perspectives on Institutions, Incentives, and Outcomes

The Economics of Crime and Justice

Trust between the police and the communities they serve is fundamental to effective law enforcement, yet its erosion continues to challenge public safety worldwide. This edited volume examines community policing as an evolving paradigm in modern law enforcement, bringing together perspectives from scholars, practitioners, and researchers. Tracing its development from Sir Robert Peel's nineteenth-century policing principles to contemporary initiatives such as Kerala's Janamaithri Suraksha Project, the volume offers comparative perspectives from the United States, Japan, Singapore, Canada, and India.
The contributions critically examine established frameworks, including Broken Windows and Zero Tolerance theories, while assessing their relevance to the Indian context and advocating indigenous approaches responsive to local socio-economic conditions. The volume also explores practical dimensions of community policing, including victim-oriented policing, restorative justice, drug-crime prevention, tribal policing, and citizen-participation initiatives such as Friends of Police and Students in Responsible Police.

Designed for academics, policymakers, police professionals, and students of criminology, forensic science, sociology, and public administration, this volume provides a comprehensive and evidence-based understanding of community-oriented policing, its evolving practices, and its potential to strengthen police-community relationships and enhance public safety.

COMMUNITY POLICING AND CRIME PREVENTION - ISSUE AND PRACTICES

This book explores how COVID-19 represents an inflection point for re-thinking and re-making democracy across the English-speaking world in an age where states are facing a future of overlapping crises. Years after the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic started to unfold, have we yet learned the deep lessons essential to maintaining and improving democracy to meet crisis challenges? Produced with the benefit of distance from the most acute period of the pandemic, the book contextualises the COVID-19 crisis as revealing pre-existing vulnerabilities and intensifying challenges of governance, inclusion, and distrust, while also spurring democratic innovation and shifting the parameters for reform. Six national case studies - Australia, Ireland, Canada, Aotearoa New Zealand, UK and USA - reveal the heterogeneity of the Anglosphere as an imagined democratic space. Viewed in the round, pandemic responses ranged from the chaotic to the internationally lauded, although even the latter have featured acute deficiencies in democratic practice, which underscores the need to gather the lessons learned. Yet, in all states, the public and political temptation to simply move on, in an act of communal forgetting and collective return to "normalcy," presents a real risk of failing to prepare for more democratic future crisis responses. This collection takes the long view, approaching its subject from multiple perspectives that examine the heterogeneity of the Anglosphere as an imagined democratic space. Taking a cross-disciplinary approach and bringing together both leading and emerging experts on democracy, constitutionalism, and the rule of law, this book powerfully combines the insights of retrospective analysis with future-focused contemplation of where our democracies are heading.

This open access book argues that the scarcity created by the under-production of vaccines during the Covid-19 years was an entirely predictable, even legitimate consequence of how the international patent system works. Far from being a technical sub-discipline of intellectual property law that simply protects inventions, the international patent system is prismatic of the ways in which we fail to adapt to the challenges of our times: patent rights are intended to incentivise innovation for societal benefit, but in fact facilitate predictable injustice. The patent system ignores the care-constituted nature of our lives, prioritising limiting notions of fairness at the cost of structural harms. The Social Life of Intellectual Property proposes an ethic of just care to temper justice in the global governance of technology. It explores intellectual property as recurring social processes and explains why individual agency and shared responsibility are implicated. On an ecologically imperilled planet, and in a time between pandemics, we must reckon with what we are socialised to believe is legally possible.
