Critical Memory Studies

This open access book proposes slow memory as a new framework for understanding how remembrance operates across time, urging scholars and practitioners to resist the acceleration that characterizes both contemporary scholarship and public memory cultures. The authors explore the theoretical foundations of slow memory in relation to environmental humanities and Indigenous studies, emphasizing themes of deep time, intergenerational justice, and contested memory regimes. The collection focuses on the fields of environment, (de)industrialization, welfare, politics, and conflict to examine how gradual transformations impact the present through remembrance practices at different tempos. It advocates for a deceleration of scholarly and commemorative practices to develop ethical, sustainable, and inclusive engagements with the past. By foregrounding slowness as a conceptual and methodological tool, and slow memory as a "connective concept," this book offers a vital framework for scholars, policymakers, and practitioners seeking to rethink the temporalities of remembrance in an era of rapid transformation. Through an examination of Alfonso Cuarón's Children of Men, this book demonstrates the ability of cinematic fictions, and other complex narrative fictions, to contribute to meeting the climate challenge by shaping the desires of audiences. What if there was a single feature film that showed us everything we need to know about climate catastrophe culture? What if that same film also made the philosophies of Slavoj Žižek, Mark Fisher, Francis Fukuyama, and Fredric Jameson accessible? Identifying the climate challenge as a cultural challenge, this book provides an unprecedented criminological analysis of both Children of Men and Fisher's oeuvre from 1998 to 2022 and demonstrates the capacity of cinematic narratives to shape climate catastrophe culture. Seeking to be part of the solution to the climate challenge, it is the first criminological study to link the capacity of cinematic fictions to shape desire to solutions to the climate crisis. In Pathway to Change, Naci Mocan investigates the economic origins of current cultural beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors, highlighting the lasting impact of historical agricultural practices and ecological conditions. He shows that cultural traits evolve in response to external shocks—such as exposure to violence, changes in institutional quality, and the laws and law enforcement—and argues that culture and institutions influence each other: culture shapes the functioning of institutions, while institutions also mold cultural norms. As a result, the success of institutional reforms depends heavily on the cultural context in which they are implemented. Drawing on research from various fields—including economics, evolutionary biology, psychology, linguistics, neuroscience, philosophy, anthropology, and political science—the author describes how cultural attributes such as trust, honesty, patience, preference for leisure, morality, individualism, and proclivity for violence shape economic outcomes and individual well-being. The book presents evidence on both intergenerational transmission of culture and horizontal transmission within the members of the same generation. It also describes how culture can be shaped and transformed, emphasizing the roles of media, education, laws and law enforcement, and role models. Finally, the book recommends that undesirable cultural attributes that are detrimental to our well-being, determined by scientific criteria, should be modified, and offers policy tools that can be deployed for cultural change.

In this exquisitely crafted ethnography, Charline Kopf examines how and why railway workers in Senegal and Mali care for a suspended railway. Trains rarely run, yet men continue to attend to the everyday practices that keep the railway alive as a social and political space: they sweep floors, repair wagons, and gather to await the arrival of a new train that might never come. The railway has become an afterplace--a worksite in a post-labor context where infrastructure, no longer fully functional, still organizes memory, politics, and collective life. Generations meet here with different temporal horizons: older workers recall futures once promised through stable employment and national ambition, while younger, precariously employed men confront futures never secured. These tensions raise urgent questions about what remains when work recedes along with the possibilities it once carried.
