Montaner J: Gaudí: Windows on the Future

Gaudí: Windows on the Future

Kuehn Malvezzi Curatorial Architecture

The architect, professor, and author Uwe Schröder has shaped the debate on fundamental themes of architecture-topology and typology, space and aesthetics-for more than three decades with his clear, uncompromising stance. These two beautifully crafted volumes present, for the first time, his award-winning oeuvre in its entirety: buildings and designs with numerous photographs and drawings, as well as the key texts Schröder has written over the years and his Raumentwurfslehre (theory of spatial design). The books open with essays by Bonn-based architecture journalist David Kasparek, who also compiled the complete chronology of Schröder's work. When viewed together, a fascinating picture emerges of the reciprocal influences of building, thinking, and teaching-disciplines so often regarded as separate.Vol. I covers the years 1992-2014. Vol. II covers the years 2015-2025. The books are available as a set consisting of volumes I-II. The individual volumes can also be purchased separately.

First comprehensive monograph on the influential Bonn-based architect and professor

Award-winning buildings such as the Wohnhöfe Auerberg, the Haus auf der Hostert, and the Hochzeitsturm Plüderhausen

Explores the reciprocal relationship between architectural theory, architectural practice, and design theory

What does it mean to reimagine the cities of tomorrow? How do we create urban environments that empower the many, rather than enrich the few? The
Manual for Designing Urban Imaginaries Colombia
is grounded in experimentation and aims to confront one of humanity's most pressing challenges: the complexities of transformation in an urban age.
Situated at the nexus of urban research, design, and activism, the present volume focuses on Colombia's rapidly urbanizing areas, where decades of armed conflict and forced displacement from neighboring Venezuela have given way to new waves of social and environmental issues. In such a challenging sociopolitical context, this manual-emerging from research by building at the ETH Zurich under the frame of the Colombia Urban Transformation Program-explores the spaces where architectural practice and design thinking meet the hopes, needs, and perceptions of communities. The concept of the "urban imaginary"-denoting the desires of the collective-is evoked as a means of developing strategies for marginalized voices, so as to shape the future of their built and natural environments. The manual demonstrates that true transformation is possible when alliances are forged, when diverse actors meet at a common table to negotiate, deliberate, and build solutions together. It also underscores that design and multiple forms of knowledge-scientific, cultural, and lived-must converge if we are to address the paradox of hyper-diversity and inequality that defines so many urban contexts.
For anyone navigating the complexity of an urbanizing Earth, the
Manual for Designing Urban Imaginaries Colombia
is a call to action. It reminds us that each and every street corner and urban periphery holds the potential to inspire transformation, and that reimagining urban life is not just an architectural endeavor-it is a deeply human one. Though grounded in Colombia, the manual's lessons extend to global areas grappling with displacement, inequality, and rapid urbanization. Ultimately, this book is about embracing the most expansive and generative territory of urbanization: the human
imagination.

In this intimate and evocative edition, Yorn Michaelsen offers a firsthand account of the glamorous golden age of working with designer Christian Dior. Paris, 1956: the undisputed capital of elegance and the avant-garde. At twenty-one, Jürgen Michaelsen stepped through the doors of the House of Christian Dior where the eponymous designer-captivated by his passion and sensitivity-hired him on the spot. Dior dubbed him Yorn and invited him into the rarefied world of Parisian haute couture. In this exceptional, first-hand account, Michaelsen recounts the magic of the ateliers, the restless energy of the studios, and the intimate world behind-the-scenes, where models, premières d'atelier, and celebrated clients brought the master's creations to life. He chronicles the feverish preparations for the collections, the anxious anticipation of the shows, the charged atmosphere of the Haute Couture salons, but also the quiet gestures of daily life, the camaraderie among colleagues, and the delightful anecdotes of a vanished era. Through these recollections, he paints a portrait of Dior as both shy and visionary, generous and demanding-a man whose genius never overshadowed his humanity. He also evokes the dazzling personality of a young Yves Saint Laurent, the daring wagers they shared, and the creative energy that animated the corridors of 30 Avenue Montaigne. After years with Dior and Madame Grès, in 1962, Michaelsen became the first German designer to open a couture house on the Champs-Élysées, blending German rigor with Parisian lightness. Vivid, intimate, and luminous, this narrative is an immersion into the secrets of haute couture and a life lesson: happiness, when shared, becomes infinite.

A new monograph on Korea's most important architect, offering an exclusive look at his rarely published houses. Earth Works: Houses by Byoung Cho offers a unique glimpse into the residential buildings of one of Korea's most influential architects. This visually stunning monograph combines photography, plans, drawings, paintings and models to provide an exclusive overview of this rarely published aspect of Byoung's work. Focused entirely around fifteen private and rarely seen residences, the book takes as its starting point some of his earliest projects - Concrete Box House (2004) and Earth House (2009) - which explore the emotional impact of place through low-intervention and minimalist rural structures. At its core, this book aims to intertwine the theoretical underpinnings of land architecture with practical project descriptions, creating a holistic narrative that bridges the conceptual and the concrete. It also explores Korean architecture's enduring concern with establishing a relationship with the land, something which is rooted in the country's distinct terrain and cultural foundations. A number of insightful texts by Byoung complement this elegant and poetic survey, exploring his architectural influences alongside the ideas of experience, perception and the Korean concepts of mak and bium (imperfection and emptiness).
