The Academy of Kindness

Set a thief to catch a thief. Set a monster to punish monsters.'I never met a Mark Lawrence book that I didn't love' ROBIN HOBB'An excellent writer' GEORGE R.R. MARTINThe Academy of Kindness exists to create agents of retribution, cast in the image of the Furies - The Kindly Ones - against whom even the gods hesitate to stand. Each year one hundred girls are sold to the Academy. Ten years later only three emerge. The Academy's halls run with blood. The few who survive its decade-long nightmare have been forged on the sands of the Wound Garden. They have learned ancient secrets amid the necrotic fumes of the Bone Garden. They leave its gates as avatars of vengeance, bound to uphold the oldest of laws.Only the most desperate would sell their child to the Kindnesses. But Rue ... she sold herself. And now, a lifetime later, a long and bloody lifetime later, just as she has discovered peace, war has been brought to an old woman's doorstep. That was a mistake.

Sustainable Development Goals Series

This book discovers a ground-breaking exploration of sustainable development in the Caribbean. This book reveals how Caribbean nations are navigating the United Nations’ 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), offering sharp, critical insights into progress on ending poverty (SDG 1), zero hunger (SDG 2), quality education (SDG 4), decent work and economic growth (SDG 8), industry and innovation (SDG 9), reduced inequalities (SDG 10), climate action (SDG 13), and strong institutions (SDG 16).Rooted in a powerful decolonizing framework, this book moves beyond conventional analysis to examine how enduring colonial legacies shaped by racism, patriarchy, and economic dependency continue to influence development outcomes. It brings urgent attention to the role of social protection systems, persistent gender inequalities, and the realities of gender-based violence and social exclusion. With a clear focus on the region’s unique vulnerabilities, this book not only interrogates challenges but also delivers solutions. I it advances innovative, context-specific financing strategies designed to support sustainable and inclusive development across Caribbean states.Re-centering Caribbean voices and lived experiences, this book challenges dominant global narratives and calls for development approaches that truly reflect post-colonial realities. It is essential reading for scholars, policymakers, and practitioners. A Decolonizing Critique

Reframing the 2030 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals for the Commonwealth Caribbean

'Deeply interesting ... a superb critique of contemporary self-obsession' Steven Poole, Guardian'Engrossing ... bracing ... incendiary and timely' Stuart Jeffries, Daily TelegraphA philosopher explains why the search for identity is meaningless, and how we should escape the self Modern life encourages us to pursue the perfect identity. Whether we aspire to become the best lawyer or charity worker, life partner or celebrity influencer, we emulate exemplars that exist in the world - hoping it will bring us happiness. But this often leads to a complex game of envy and pride. We achieve these identities but want others to imitate us. We disagree with those whose identities contradict ours - leading to polarisation and even violence. And yet when they thump against us, we are ashamed to ring hollow. In Against Identity, philosopher Alexander Douglas seeks an alternative wisdom. Searching the work of three thinkers - ancient Chinese philosopher Zhuangzi, Dutch Enlightenment thinker Benedict de Spinoza, and 20th Century French theorist René Girard - he explores how identity can be a spiritual violence that leads us away from truth.Through their worlds and radically different cultures, we discover how, at moments of historical rupture, our hunger for being grows: and yet, it is exactly these times when we should make peace with our indeterminacy and discover the freedom of escaping our selves.'Lucid and absorbing ... One of my highlight books of the year' Stuart Kelly, Scotsman

Geschlecht und Soziale Arbeit

A shocking encounter with American gun culture that reveals the devastating effects of how people are training their minds and bodies for violence. 'Utterly brilliant . . . deeply researched and thoughtful' - Justin Webb, former BBC North America editor Every day, at firearms schools across the country, ordinary Americans are learning how to use a gun. Who are their teachers? What are they being taught, and for what purpose? Harel Shapira, a sociologist at the University of Texas, has spent ten years immersed in the world of gun-training. Throughout the dozens of classes he has taken, he has been taught that the world is filled with 'bad guys' who can only be stopped by the self-styled 'good guys'. He has learned that he must be prepared to kill or be killed. Basic Pistol reveals how these schools are going far beyond teaching the mechanics of gun safety. They are teaching a way of living in the world rooted in racist fears, aggressive masculinity and an entitlement to violence. It will explain why the risk of widespread gun ownership is not simply the possibility of more gun violence and mass shootings. The risk is to the very foundations of democracy itself. 'A must read' - Heather Ann Thompson 'Groundbreaking' - Adam Winkler 'Fascinating, disturbing, necessary' - Eric Klinenberg

The Hollow Boys

From Monty Jay comes a dark, twisted romance set in a world of secrets, vengeance, and monsters that don't hide in the shadows-they rule them.Hollow Heights University is a prestigious institution for the elite, nestled in the eerie seaside town of Ponderosa Springs. Beneath its polished surface lies a breeding ground for corruption, where secrets rot and danger lurks behind every corner. She should have stayed invisible. One wrong move placed her directly in the path of the Hollow Boys-a group of ruthless, powerful men who thrive on control, fear, and destruction. They are the monsters people warn about... and the ones no one escapes. What begins as a descent into their dangerous world soon becomes something far more complicated. Bound by vengeance, violence, and buried truths, lines blur between victim and accomplice, hatred and desire. This isn't a story about heroes or happy endings. It's about choices that stain the soul, love that grows in the darkest places, and the kind of obsession that consumes everything in its path. Some people run from their monsters. She fell in love with hers.

This unprecedentedly expansive international collection of empirical and theoretical material explores the nascent field of criminology and affect. Affect theory first arose as an analytical framework to conceptualize and understand dynamic emotional relationships between individuals and the social environment. Despite the tremendous potential utility for affect theory to assist criminologists with conceptualizing crime and justice, affect remains underutilized in criminological research. Uniting research from otherwise geographically and culturally disparate locales under affect's analytical umbrella presents a unique opportunity to demonstrate how criminologists can utilize affect theory to understand aspects of the justice process that otherwise prove elusive. The Handbook is organized around the most pressing topics of interest to researchers, policymakers, and practitioners engaged with crime and the administration of justice. The first set of chapters explore the emotional cartographies of affective governance through engagements with affective labor in penal spaces, incorporating affect theory into genocide studies, modern ruins and feeling the rules, affective meaning in group family therapy programs, and how crime concerns and perceived victimization risks affect public support for harsher criminal sanctions. Part II examines the intersection of affective economies and organizational logics by exploring emotions in the regulation of state violence, the moral economy of mafia organizations, moral economies of the illegal caviar trade, agricultural crime and farmer mental health, and friendship in the lives of urban sex workers. The key topics underpinning Part III include incorporating affect theory into understanding decades of research on correctional populations, rehabilitating emotions through prison dog programs, journeys of women under carceral control, intuition and feelings within penal evaluation, and remorse and emotions in research on criminal-legal decision-makers. Part IV focuses on traumatic affect in problem-solving courts, affective practices in rape trials, emotional dynamics of video links and video evidence in the courtroom, emotions and perceptions of visual evidence, and affective risks and responses to intimate partner violence. Part V engages with affective positionalities through narrative criminology, reflexivity and vulnerability in sexual violence research, death penalty sentencing and hauntings of the court, jury decision-making, judicial authority, and release.By focusing on emotion as a dynamic and transmissible component of human interaction, this important work illuminates how researchers and practitioners can account for the less tangible-but nonetheless extremely significant-aspects of the justice process.

'Has the power to change the way you look at the world' Steven Bartlett'The heir to Oliver Sacks' David BaddielA FINANCIAL TIMESBEST BOOK OF 2024AN INDEPENDENTBOOK OF THE MONTHGluttony. Greed. Sloth. Pride. Envy. Lust. Anger. These are the seven deadly sins, the vices of humankind that define immorality, the roots of all evil in the world. Or so some believe. But do these sins really represent moral failings, or are they simply human functions that aid us? Are they just the result of how our bodies, psyches, and brains in particular, are wired? This new book by Dr Guy Leschziner, a professor of neurology and sleep medicine, explores the underlying nature of the seven deadly sins, their neuroscientific and psychological basis, their origin in our genes and crucially how certain medical disorders give rise to them.Drawing on his clinical practice, we meet individuals whose physical and psychological conditions have given rise to these sins, where brain injury or other experiences have sparked 'immoral' actions. He explores how illness can simply expose what lies within us and investigates how the origins of these traits lie in evolutionary imperatives to preserve the wellbeing of the tribe. Perhaps, he suggests, these character traits are less of a moral question and more biological, which raises fundamental issues of responsibility and blame in the face of 'sin'.Combining cutting-edge science placed in the context of real-life experience with patients, the book reexamines where the boundaries between normal human nature, pathology and sin are drawn. And, most importantly, whether these hard-wired traits truly represent sin, or simply the intensity of our intrinsic desire to survive and thrive.
