No One Gets Out Unscarred makes a simple but rarely acknowledged case: America's prison system is failing not only the people it incarcerates, but also the staff who work inside it and the communities to which almost everyone returns. At the heart of the book is an extraordinary exchange between two men who spent decades on opposite sides of the bars. Robert Barton has been incarcerated since adolescence in high-security federal prisons. Jack Donson is a retired Bureau of Prisons official who began as a correctional officer and rose to become a case manager. Drawn from more than fifty hours of interviews, their interwoven accounts reveal how a system designed to punish and control ends up brutalizing prisoners while simultaneously eroding staff morale, health, and judgment, producing an adversarial environment that makes everyone less safe.

Prevention is usually seen as quite unexciting. Preventive medicine is less dramatic than surgery, crime prevention than detection. However, people doing less of one thing are free to do more of another: obesity prevention makes exercise possible and crime prevention frees up time, money and energy to invest elsewhere. This book seeks to enliven the topic of crime prevention by looking at pro-social behaviour alongside crime, to think of improving the quality of life by both deflecting people from the experience of crime – either as perpetrators, victims, or worried bystanders – and nudging them towards collaborative and altruistic behaviour; by changing things, places and people in ways which push people from crime and pull them towards active citizenship. The main theme of the book confronts the complex reality, that while it is proper to think of two separate trades in arms--legal and illegal--in practice there is a considerable overlap between the two. Drawing on a wide range of primary sources, Phythian argues that the lessons of the most important and extensive cases of the last 20 years suggest that a significant element of the illicit trade in arms has in fact been sanctioned at some level of government in the pursuit of broader security or geopolitical ends.

Offering a concise, yet thorough, introduction to the illicit arms trade, the main theme of this significant volume confronts the complex reality that while it is proper to think of two separate trades in arms, legal and illegal, in practice there is a considerable overlap between the two. Following the events of 9\11 individual countries and the international community became increasingly concerned about how best to prevent the funding of terrorist groups. Alternative remittance systems such as Hawala, where money is moved informally between a network of brokers in the Middle East, north Africa and south Asia have been identified as a potential source of terrorist financing leading to calls for greater regulation of such alternative remittance systems.This book analyses the risk such alternative remittance systems pose in terms of terrorist financing, offering a detailed overview of the historical origins and methods of operation of alternative remittance systems or informal value transfer systems. The factors that have come to ensure that these systems have remained operationally viable in modern times are identified along with the risks they present balanced against an overview of their actual misuse for illicit purposes to date. The book presents a detailed critique of the UK framework for the regulation of these systems drawing where possible on existing data to assess the use and effectiveness of these measures in practice. A range of options for mitigating risks associated with specific remittance corridors is considered ranging from initiatives that promote remittances through the banking sector, to efforts to mitigate risk and the impact on the delivery of UK overseas development aid. The book concludes with key recommendations as to the effectiveness of the current regulatory framework within the UK viewed from the perspective of international efforts to secure the regulation of these systems, and in stemming terrorist finance as part of national and international counter-terrorism policy.
