To change the world, we need a money revolution. Yet the debate over money has been dominated by two perspectives: those free-market capitalists who want money to rule everything, and those who want the state to harness money's power. Decolonizing Money presents an anarchist theory of money which sets out strategies for collective liberation beyond state and capital. 

Drawing on anarchist, abolitionist and anti-colonial feminist traditions, Julio Linares makes the heretical argument for a grassroots democratic movement to abolish the imperialist US dollar as a necessary step towards the cancellation of debt and establishing a worldwide basic income. Linares shows that money, beyond a store of value and a medium of exchange, is a series of promises a society makes to itself - and he challenges us to make them otherwise. 

This innovative book takes up lessons from global history and social movements in order to unleash the political imagination. It shows us how the creation, use and most importantly the destruction of money are forms of power that need to be reclaimed through direct action, as part of a radical democratic project for autonomy and self-determination.

Decolonizing Money

From a leading historian, the story of how entrepreneurial Jewish immigrants transformed commercial banking and enabled the economic and social advancement of Jews in America. What are immigrants to do when business opportunities abound in their new home, but banks refuse essential financial support? How could they make the journey in the first place without helping hands? In this lively history, Rebecca Kobrin chronicles the turn-of-the-twentieth-century Jewish immigrants who stepped up by doing the lending themselves. Arriving from the Russian Empire and settling primarily in New York, they made livelihoods by assisting fellow Jews so they could purchase passage to the United States and, after arriving, obtain credit that other lenders would not dare provide. Credit to the Nation traces the novel practices of bankers who not only enabled the flourishing of American Jewry but also revolutionized the US financial industry. Drawing on previously unexamined archival materials in Russian, Yiddish, German, and English, Kobrin tells a story that is also crucial to the history of New York, as immigrant bankers' financing of real estate transformed wide swathes of the city. Lenders drove a boom in the prices of tenement buildings, but heavy speculation eventually precipitated the downfall of immigrant banking. Kobrin notes in particular the case of the Bank of United States--a private lender catering primarily to Jewish businessmen--which the Federal Reserve refused to bail out from bankruptcy in 1930. Immigrants' grasping for credit, and the rise and fall of immigrant banks, gave way to a contemporary banking industry that, ironically, refuses credit to today's immigrants. Kobrin reminds us that now, as before, the denial of credit pushes entrepreneurial Americans into unregulated money-lending and the trap of endless debt.

The unifying thread of its chapters is to challenge the rendering of the material world as a mere background to or object in politics, revealing the formative role of material entities and processes in political processes of infrastructure construction, knowledge production, and technical expertise in Turkey. Chapters explore the politics of material entities such as roads, canals, oilfields, and mines as well as less elaborated material sites, including military bases, soccer fields, and wetlands. In the context of Turkey's ongoing politics of 'modernisation', these interdisciplinary case studies from the fields of anthropology of infrastructure and extraction, science and technology studies, and environmental humanities, provide important new analytical and theoretical approaches to understanding Turkish politics at local, national, and transnational scales.

Rights of nature have moved from being a slightly eccentric niche topic to a mainstream field of research. First introduced to legal systems of the Southern hemisphere, they have since found their way into Northern legal systems, from Canada to Spain. Yet they face rejection in many others. As a legal innovation from the Global South making its way to the North, they are of special importance for a decolonial comparative law that avoids and overcomes Eurocentrism, and for studies of legal pluralism that go beyond state law.
 

 This collection brings together two general reports, five special reports and 20 country reports first prepared for the 2022 World Congress of the International Association of Comparative Law and since thoroughly updated. By linking rights of nature with discussions on global legal pluralism, it contributes to a deeper understanding of both phenomena. It innovatively groups countries into three categories - poietic systems at the origin of rights of nature, mimetic systems that adopted the concept, and resistant systems that did not. The latter category especially has so far escaped attention, and yet resistance, and the reasons for it, are crucial elements in understanding rights of nature. The book combines formal law with an analysis of socioeconomic and cultural conditions, and analyses in particular the local and transnational movements behind the adoption of rights of nature.
