Der Bogen der versammelten Beiträge reicht von der Reform des Primärrechts über die europäische Werteordnung, der Arbeitsweise der Institutionen, bis hin zu einzelnen Politiken und Außenbeziehungen. Es handelt sich um die verschriftlichten Verhandlungen des 23. Österreichischen Europarechtstags, der am 20. und 21. September 2024 in Wien stattfand und dessen Generalthema lautete "Europa 2024-2029: Leitplanken für Recht und Politik". Anknüpfungspunkte des Themas waren die Wahlen zum Europäischen Parlament im Juni 2024 und die damit verbundene Neubesetzung der EU-Kommission, einschließlich des Hohen Vertreters, im Herbst 2024. Auch die bereits zweite und damit letzte Amtsperiode des aktuellen Ständigen Ratspräsidenten lief mit Ende November 2024 aus.

This book provides a comprehensive account of the achievements of the economic regions set up in France after the First World War. It identifies exactly how they operated, as well as critical success factors such as effective leadership. Some recent historians have taken a very negative view of the part played by these regions in economic development. This new study instead argues that they made a significant contribution and laid the foundations for the regions created in France after 1945. The key areas which they identified: transport, power generation, and technical education, have remained the preoccupations of regional governments in France and elsewhere to this day. The author covers the needs of commerce and industry, but also agriculture and tourism. Based on fresh research using a wide range of primary sources, this book will appeal to economic historians, economists, and geographers, as well as historians with a particular interest in France.
Terence Cudbird gained his doctorate from the University of Oxford in 2020 and is an Associate Member of the History Faculty there. He published an article on the French regions in French History in 2023.

The Origins of Economic Regions in France, 1918-1940

A comprehensive intellectual history of the idea of the WestHow did "the West" come to be used as a collective self-designation signaling political and cultural commonality? When did "Westerners" begin to refer to themselves in this way? Was the idea handed down from the ancient Greeks, or coined by nineteenth-century imperialists? Neither, writes Georgios Varouxakis in The West, his ambitious and fascinating genealogy of the idea. "The West" was not used by Plato, Cicero, Locke, Mill, or other canonized figures of what we today call the Western tradition. It was not first wielded by empire-builders. It was, Varouxakis shows, decisively promoted in the 1840s by the French philosopher Auguste Comte (whose political project, incidentally, was passionately anti-imperialist). The need for the use of the term"the West" emerged to avoid the confusing or unwanted consequences of the use of "Europe." The two overlapped, but were not identical, with the West used to exclude certain "others" within Europe as well as to include the Americas. After examining the origins, Varouxakis traces the many and often surprising changes in the ways in which the West has been understood, and the different intentions and repercussions related to a series of these contested definitions. While other theories of the West consider only particular aspects of the concept and its history (if only in order to take aim at its reputation), Varouxakis's analysis offers a comprehensive, multilayered account that reaches to the present day, exploring the multiplicity of current and prospective meanings. He concludes with an examination of how, since 2022, definitions and membership in the West are being reworked to include Ukraine, as the evolution and redefinition continue.
