Woodrow Wilson

Josephus Daniels

Woodrow Wilson: Speeches, Inaugural Addresses, State of the Union Addresses, Executive Decisions & Messages to Congress

It is 1381. England, reeling from the Black Death and years of conflict abroad, prepares for harvest. Two childhood friends ride into the town of Brentwood, Essex, where they come upon an altercation with a local Justice bent on squeezing more coin from the masses. Thus begins a rebellion of the commons - loyal to the king, but not to those landowners who press to curtail their freedoms; the multitude finding common cause against the powers that threaten their livelihoods.

Set over sixteen days, from Whitsuntide to Corpus Christi, Doom Painting roves across England as the men and women of the southern counties, supported by the visionary poet-priest John Ball, march to London to take their demands to the child King Richard II. Out of the revolt emerges its enigmatic and charismatic leader Wat Tyler, an opportunistic and mercurial rogue whose morality is birthed by the cause, and who shapes an identity for the English which has never been lost.

Written in sinuous and exhilarating prose, with all the drama and tension of fated history, A.K. Blakemore's thrilling retelling of the Peasant's Revolt renders it as a definitive moment in British history. In the meeting of peasantry and nobility, new versions of England were born, and - for one bloody summer - the people of England seized control of their narrative.

Access to History for the IB Diploma: Conflict (from 750 CE onwards)

This book re-examines the origins and development of the laws of war and human rights law and exposes an overlooked provision of the European Convention on Human Rights which permits the use of lethal force where absolutely necessary to quell an insurrection. When civilian casualties occur in internal armed conflicts, questions are asked about how civilians can be better protected against the use of force by armed insurgents and state security forces. The laws of war include protection against the targeting of civilians but permit the use of force based on 'military necessity' and allow 'proportionate' civilian casualties. Where those laws do not apply, the use of force is generally seen as being limited to self-defence. This creates paradigms of armed conflict and law-enforcement with very different rules. The paradigms are then treated by governments and other actors as being separate and divided by a threshold of violence, when, in practice, they overlap, both in the conduct of military operations and, this book argues, as a matter of law. Revisiting the law provides the opportunity to reassess the benefits and risks of the existing paradigms and consider how applying the provision permitting the use of lethal force in quelling an insurrection would affect them. The book concludes that it offers a middle way based on the existing law, but it requires wider recognition and development in order to achieve a more appropriate balance between human rights and collective security.

The first full biography of Granville Sharp, the founding figure of abolitionism in BritainIn London, 1765, Jonathan Strong was bludgeoned half to death by his enslaver. As the injured Strong staggered towards a doctor on Mincing Lane, he was noticed by the civil servant Granville Sharp (1735-1813)-a chance meeting which would set in motion a lifelong fight for justice.Appalled by the violence of slavery-a system with at the time some 900,000 victims in North America alone-Sharp took up the abolitionist cause with a zealous sense of moral duty. He taught himself law to challenge slavery in the Somerset case, wrote Britain's first antislavery tract, publicised the horrors of the Zong massacre, and was integral to the establishment of the free colony of Sierra Leone.Michael Bundock recounts Sharp's astonishing and largely forgotten life, which saw collaboration with Black activists Olaudah Equiano and Ottobah Cugoano and even brought Sharp to the attention of America's founding fathers. This is the extraordinary story of how the fight for abolition began, and the single-minded campaigner at its heart.

This book offers the first ever in-depth analysis of the emerging constitutionalism in South Sudan and the challenges it faces. The book critically analyses the constitution-making processes that occurred in South Sudan between 2005 and 2011, finding, among other things, that there was a failure of constitutional discourse, particularly in relation to the 2011 drafting process of the Transitional Constitution. It goes on to analyse how the constitution is being implemented. It finds that, despite the clear division of powers and functions between the national government and the sub-national governments, what has emerged in South Sudan in the post-constitution-making period is a form of coercive centralism where the national government controls much of the political decision-making process. This has had serious implications for democracy, constitutionalism, and the rule of law. Finally, bearing in mind the failure in both how the transitional constitution was made and how it is being implemented, the book undertakes a critical analysis of the proposed process for drafting a new constitution for South Sudan. It identifies serious shortcomings and proposes how these could be addressed to enhance the process.

Revolution and Counterrevolution in America

Pulitzer Prize–winning former Washington Post columnist Eugene Robinson tells our nation’s torturous racial history through his own family’s story, starting with his great-grandfather’s freedom from slavery and threading his way to his own narrative and reaching today’s Black Lives Matter movement, asking whether this time will be different. On March 27, 1829, a wealthy white planter and entrepreneur named Richard Fordham purchased four enslaved African Americans from a woman named Isabella Perman. One of them was journalist Eugene Robinson’s great-great-grandfather, a boy called Harry. Starting from this transaction, which took place in Charleston, South Carolina, Freedom Lost, Freedom Won brings to life two hundred years of our nation’s history through the eyes of the remarkable family that Harry founded. Assigned a formal name—Henry Fordham—and put to work as a blacksmith, he achieved his own freedom a decade before the Civil War. He was there when victorious Union troops marched into Charleston in 1865, ending slavery and guaranteeing liberty for Black people—only on paper, though, and only for a time. Robinson traces the arc of his familial lineage through the repeated cycles in which African Americans have fought their way upward toward freedom and opportunity, been forced back down again, and renewed their determined climb. From his great-great-grandfather’s achievement in becoming a “free person of color” before emancipation to his great-grandfather’s Reconstruction-era success, from his father’s odyssey of the Great Migration to his own coming-of-age during the civil rights movement, Robinson delves into a rich archive of Black narratives, arguing that we still have a long way to go before it is possible to speak of a “post-racial America.” Setting his extensive research within the larger historical context, Robinson provides both an indictment of structural racism and an illustration of how it has been fought and, at times, courageously overcome. Freedom Lost, Freedom Won tells our country’s tortuous racial history through Robinson’s family’s story of struggle and survival, pushing us to consider how far the nation has come—willingly or not—and how far it still has to go.
