These poems, with their beauty, wit, tenderness, and heartbreak, are still as alive and moving today as they were two thousand years ago. &nbsp; They are dense, subtle, witty, ardent, fearless, deeply uncensored, nasty (sometimes), petty (sometimes), and always beautiful. It’s especially his love poems that have earned readers’ admiration over the centuries; the joy and the savage self-inflicted torments that he underwent in his “miserable, disastrous love affair” have been shaped into poems that for honesty and emotional power have few parallels in world literature. &nbsp; Stephen Mitchell, who is known for bringing ancient texts to vibrant new life, has now translated Catullus’s poems for a new generation of readers. These are the first translations of Catullus to reimagine his rhythms in English and thus to let contemporary readers hear the formal beauty of his verse as well as its content, which Robert Lowell calls “much more raw and direct than anything in English.”

War and Community in Late Antiquity

He said he would understand if it was too much for me, that I could leave him, that I was young, I should be living, I said to him, I am living. Johnny Grant faces stark life decisions. Seeking answers, he looks back to his relationship with Jerry Field. When they met, nearly thirty years ago, Johnny was 19, Jerry was 45. In Olympia, Judith Barringer provides a comprehensive and richly illustrated history of one of the most important sites in the ancient Greek and Roman world, where athletic competitions took place alongside—and were closely connected with—crucial religious and political activities. Barringer describes the development of the Altis, the most sacred area of Olympia, where monuments to athletes successful in the games joined those erected to the gods and battlefield victories. Rival city-states and rulers built monuments to establish eminence, tout alliances, and join this illustrious company in a rich intergenerational dialogue. The political importance of Olympia was matched by its place as the largest sanctuary dedicated to Zeus, king of the gods. Befitting Zeus’s role as god of warfare, the Olympian oracle was consulted to ensure good omens for war, and the athletic games embodied the fierce competition of battle. Other gods and heroes were worshipped at Olympia too, Hera, Artemis, and Herakles among them. Drawing on a comprehensive knowledge of the archaeological record, Barringer describes the full span of Olympia’s history, from the first monumental building around 600 BC to the site’s gradual eclipse in the late Christianized Roman empire. Nafeesa T. Nichols analyzes how racialized and gendered spaces are presented in post-apartheid South African literature. Through the examination of four novels, Kopano Matlwa's Coconut (2007), Zukiswa Wanner's The Madams (2006), Niq Mhlongo's After Tears (2007), and Kgebetli Moele's Room 207 (2006), Popular Spaces in Post-Apartheid Literature highlights the interconnections between space, race, gender, and popular culture within the post-apartheid South Africa. Nichols not only explores how post-1994 literature attempts to represent the realities of the post-apartheid condition, but also reveals the innovative and radical contributions that these young authors of the early twenty-first century made within the literary world. This book mediates the dynamics and complexities of space in connection to race and gender, exemplifies the challenge of working with and in violent masculinist textual spaces, and conceptualizes the popular in connection with class, race, and gender struggles. Drawing on an interdisciplinary mix of Black feminist theory, feminist geographical perspectives, and spatial theory, Nichols provides a close reading of each of the selected texts, offering broader insights into the how Black subjects navigate various spaces of oppression. Through these novels, she shows how we are able to imagine the possibilities of liberatory spaces, celebrate local knowledge, creativity, the popular, and, most importantly, the beauty and resistance found in the everyday. In the end, this book contributes to the academic conversations that continue to take place surrounding gender, space, literature, and liberation in South Africa.
