Soumya Mohanty: We have not Yet been
explained

We have not Yet been explained

GATTA PATATA

Kamal Shair's book is a classic rags to riches story: the village boy, who with determination and education, achieves business success, wealth, more wealth, and then influence and power. What makes it unusual is that it emanates from the Arab world. Rarely among Arabs have individuals from thoroughly modest backgrounds, with no access to links, networks or connections become truly global commercial players. Shair was born in a small town in what was then Transjordan and dragged himself through school (his mother was illiterate), moved to college in Beirut, then sailed off to America (Michigan and Yale) and returned to the Middle East to create a multinational corporate empire engaged in trade, construction and manufacturing. Dar al Handasah - Arabic for House of Engineers - was founded in a small flat in Beirut and today, spans the globe with offices in 37 countries. In its early years, Dar al Handasah fought off competition from established western consultancies to win contracts for prestige engineering throughout the Middle East. Eventually, its activities extended further to Europe, the United States, Africa and Asia. By not following the usual pattern of patronage and favours, Kamal Shair applied a fresh kind of ethic in an environment with a loosely-structured business ethic. In the process, he lived through and witnessed at first hand and at close quarters some of the most dramatic events of the modern Arab world. This is quite an extraordinary tale and a very original prism through which to read the turbulent post-World War II history of the Middle East. At the same time we see the growth, despite all the odds, of one of the world's great engineering and business enterprises in a narrative of epic and inspirational proportions.

Dodging and Confronting Stigma examines the lives of people who were stigmatized or marginalized in Japan’s late classical and medieval ages. Often characterized as beggars, they in fact pursued a wide range of occupations and lifestyles, even while haunted by discrimination and exploitation. They developed skills, acquired property rights, and even manipulated the elite who controlled them, thereby achieving some degree of self-determination. Outcasts are frequently mentioned in the records of Buddhist temples, and the variety of references provides evidence for the many ways they participated in medieval religious life: as cleansers of pollution, as cremation and burial workers, as objects of salvific efforts—and as guards and enforcers in an increasingly militarized religious establishment. Complex and stratified, outcast society as a whole included people who demanded their rights through litigation and arms, just as did others in Japan’s medieval world. The emergence, especially in the late medieval age, of people who occupied marginal positions in society—neither wholly stigmatized nor wholly free of stigma—complicates the picture. Such marginal people included bearers of Japanese culture such as garden designers, theatrical performers, and shamans, making it impossible to simply write them off as social pariahs or victims of discrimination. Janet Goodwin demonstrates that outcast and marginal society was a complex one whose members fulfilled diverse functions necessary to medieval society, formed complex relationships with institutions and individuals of power, and made enduring contributions to medieval culture. Most studies of late classical and medieval Japan focus on elites: monarchs and courtiers, powerful warriors, and high-ranking religious figures. Indeed, these are the people who appear prominently in sources of the time. However, tantalizing pictures of outcast and marginal people appear in an array of sources such as aristocrats’ diaries, legal documents, tales, scrolls, and screen paintings, among others. In emphasizing people at the bottom of society and on its margins, and the ways that they dodged and confronted stigma, this book broadens the picture of Japanese society of the time.

Is individual liberty collapsing, or was it systematically liquidated for corporate profit? Written from a perspective of classical stability and individual liberty, this text entirely rejects modern partisan theater to deliver a clinical audit of a collapsing superstructure. For nearly two centuries, the United States was anchored by a self-reliant populace, high social trust, and a sovereign industrial engine. Today, that civilizational inheritance has been downsized into an open economic zone-a borderless marketplace where short-term corporate profits are prioritized over the long-term survival of the middle class. In The Hollowing of the West, independent observer H.A. Veritas cuts through the manufactured noise of the two-party system to expose the cooperative, multi-decade betrayal managed from both sides of the political aisle. From the co-optation of the political Left by trillion-dollar asset managers to the historical free-trade deceptions of the establishment Right, this text details the precise economic and demographic mechanisms that hollowed out the American middle class. Inside this book, you will explore:

The Corporate Pivot: How Woke Capitalism transformed progressive activism into the public relations enforcement arm of Wall Street.

The Two-Party Fraud: How the establishment traded away America's industrial independence and working-class leverage for global market integration.

The Outside Perspective: Why homogenous, high-trust nations like Japan look at the modern West with a sense of civilizational mourning.

The 2030 Fiscal Cliff: A data-driven macro audit of the upcoming sovereign debt, monetary, and entitlement breaking points.

More than a mere warning track, this book provides a realistic, non-fringe blueprint for local sovereignty, decentralized parallel economies, and individual self-sufficiency. The comfortable consumer paradigm is ending. The math is unyielding. It is time to rebuild the foundation.

The Ghrits (Ghirths) of the Kangra Valley form one of the most distinctive communities of the Western Himalaya, recognised since 1848 for their unique physiognomy and their concentration in the Kangra hills. Popular belief traces their ancestry to the ancient Traigarta of the Mahabharata, a claim emotionally compelling yet historically unverified.
This book re-examines these narratives through a rigorous and interdisciplinary lens. Drawing on history, sociology, linguistics, physiognomy, inscriptions, oral traditions, art forms, and occupational patterns, it reconstructs an evidence-based account of the origins and evolution of the Ghrit identity.
Beyond questions of ancestry, the work offers a vivid portrait of Ghrit life and culture, exploring their beliefs, customs, festivals, artistic traditions, social values, and changing occupations. At a time when urbanisation and shifting aspirations are distancing younger generations from their roots, this book serves as both a scholarly study and a cultural archive, enabling the Ghrit community, especially its urban members, to reconnect with a heritage that is gradually fading from collective memory today.

I Will Marry When I Want

A book about Indian life, inherited behaviour, emotional confusion, family politics, authority, ambition, guilt, language and all the strange things people here quietly accept as "normal."Told through observations, stories and deadpan honesty, In Other Words looks at the country not politically or academically, but personally.Somewhere between humour and discomfort, this book asks a very simple question:how much of who we are was actually chosen by us?

The TV and Movie industries created the Italian American stereotypes we know today.
These stereotypes don't reflect the extraordinary impacts of Italian American individuals of all ages and economic backgrounds on the cultural and economic advancement of the United States to address this, the Italian American Reputation Lab (IARL) is presenting an analytic report on how the historical and current Italian diaspora depict a very different narrative than the mainstream media of how Italian-Americans have contributed to shaping the cultural and economic fabric of the United States.

Davide Ippolito is one of the foremost international experts on Reputation Literacy, Reputation Management, and Contents Creation. He's a publisher, a filmmaker, and a producer of both feature films and documentaries which are available on Amazon Prime and Pluto. Founder of the streaming media platform Business+, he serves as the Chief Scientific Officer for the USA-based Italian American Reputation Lab (IARL).
