This open access book explores the political utility and consequences of memory laws with a focus on how militant memory laws frame, underpin and generate international conflicts. Proceeding from Russia's ongoing aggression against Ukraine, this examination plots how memory laws have preceded, partially led to, and encouraged the outbreak of the war itself via Russian propaganda. It also offers a broader perspective looking at developments in the Baltic States, Belarus, Finland, Germany, Hungary, and Poland, as well as in European (Council of Europe and European Union) law. Bringing together scholars with diverse perspectives, this book provides both analysis and conceptual reflection for scholars assessing the politics of memory laws. What goals are still feasible for the politics of emancipation on a ruined planet? This is where we are. Today's techno-oligarchs are not concerned with saving the planet; rather, they have accepted the end of progress and are focused on safeguarding their wealth in the face of an impending political and ecological collapse. Artificial intelligence and algorithms make decisions for us. Climate breakdown has long steamed past the wreckage of the Paris Agreement. Perhaps the accelerationists have the right idea. Accelerationism - which aims to resolve the current crisis through the intensification of technological development - is the only philosophy not clinging to the now-extinct idea of progress. The idea has gained ground on both the left and right: but the right-wing is shot through with misanthropy, while the left remains entangled in a faith in technological progress and the domination of nature. Transcending capitalism at the end of progress requires a synthesis of the two. The result of this synthesis: Dark Socialism. Die 1941 gegründete Kontinentale Öl AG sollte die Ölquellen des Kaukasus ausbeuten und damit die Grundlage für den von den Nazis erträumten Endsieg legen.

Der Zweite Weltkrieg war ein Krieg der Panzer, Lastkraftwagen und Flugzeuge. Öl bildete die unverzichtbare Grundlage für die Feldzüge. Das Deutsche Reich verfügte nur über geringe Vorkommen und war deshalb auf die Eroberung einer Ölbasis angewiesen. Die 1941 gegründete Kontinentale Öl AG sollte ein Gegengewicht zu den großen alliierten Ölkonzernen bilden und vor allem die reichen Erdölquellen des Kaukasus ausbeuten. Da dieses Gebiet jedoch nicht dauerhaft besetzt werden konnte, mussten sich die Nationalsozialisten mit anderen europäischen Regionen - Rumänien, Galizien, Estland - begnügen.
Das halb staatliche, halb privatwirtschaftliche Unternehmen band alle relevanten wirtschaftlichen, staatlichen, politischen und militärischen Interessengruppen ein. Die 'Konti' bildete so ein Modell für künftige, 'kontinental' orientierte Konzerne. Die hochfliegenden Zukunftspläne standen im Kontrast zum operativen Scheitern der Kontinentalen Öl AG. Insgesamt eröffnet die Geschichte dieses Unternehmens einen neuen Blick auf die NS-Wirtschaft, die herrschende Klasse des Regimes, also die hochrangigen Vertreter aus Wirtschaft, Partei, Militär und Staatsbürokratie, und die politisch-militärischen Entscheidungen. Er ist dazu geeignet, vermeintlich gesicherte Erkenntnisse über das Verhältnis von Politik und Ökonomie infrage zu stellen.
