Studies in Penal Theory and Ethics

This book explores the connections between punishment theory and punishment practice It shines a much-needed light on the relation between how punishment is experienced by those subjected to it (and others), and the more general consideration of what justifies punishment in the first place. Leading experts in the field weigh up what is appropriate punishment - both in quantitative and in non-quantitative ways. It explains why punishment is so difficult to justify, looks at the compatibility of modes and processes of penal sanctions, and explore how best to achieve the aspiration to set reasonable terms for future coexistence through state punishment. The book addresses key topics such as life imprisonment, what is at stake when we use prisons to punish, and how criminal offenders can be successfully integrated into society. It considers how we know whether we over-punish offenders, what we should do in response to excessive punishment, and the possibility of replacing punitive systems with non-punitive ones. Overall, the book makes a groundbreaking contribution to the philosophy of punishment, explicitly connecting general, abstract questions about the moral and political justification of punishment with empirical insight into the realities and experiences of punishment practices.

Punishment Theory Meets Punishment Practice

This book—the first to treat workplace culture like a garden instead of a construction project—offers the proven framework that transforms toxic environments into thriving ecosystems where all talent flourishes. Organizations fail when they treat culture like a construction project. But they thrive when they treat it like a garden, cultivating conditions for growth rather than engineering behavior through rigid blueprints. Award-winning consultant Abi Adamson introduces the SERN framework—Soil, Exposure, Roots, Nourishment—to guide leaders toward sustainable cultural transformation. Through compelling stories from her work redesigning cultures at Spotify, Sony Music, and the Gates Foundation, Adamson shows how to make the following positive changes:

Detoxify organizational foundations

Ensure that diverse perspectives get real influence

Create authentic belonging

Distribute resources equitably

Organizations using this approach report dramatic improvements in psychological safety, authentic engagement, and the ability to retain diverse talent pools. Unlike traditional culture initiatives focused on compliance and conformity, this framework helps leaders identify toxic environmental conditions, move beyond demographic headcounts to actual inclusion, enable people to contribute authentically, and recognize that equal treatment in unequal systems produces unequal outcomes. Set during a pivotal moment when workplace culture programs are being dismantled or reimagined, this practical guide offers leaders a sustainable alternative—treating culture as a living ecosystem that requires ongoing cultivation rather than a one-time structural fix.

The Girl with the Seven Lives

INSTANT #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER From Senator Ted Cruz, a timely, authoritative exploration of Clarence Thomas’s life, ideas, and lasting impact on constitutional law For over three decades, Clarence Thomas has stood at the center of American law, enduring withering criticism and personal attacks while writing some of the most brilliant, accessible, transformational opinions in the Supreme Court’s history. His insistence that the Constitution, not merely judicial precedent, is the highest authority has reshaped American jurisprudence, and his lasting impact on the trajectory of constitutional law is undeniable. In this powerful and timely book, Senator Ted Cruz draws on his own Supreme Court clerkship, on his many years as a Supreme Court advocate, and on his now decades-long friendship with Justice Thomas to paint a portrait of one of the most consequential—and misunderstood—Americans in our nation’s history. Drawing on nine hours of exclusive, wide-ranging, and deeply personal one-on-one interviews with the Justice, Cruz reveals how Thomas’s most formative early experiences—like growing up in crushing poverty in segregated Georgia, his early encounters with extreme racism, and his brief stint in radical left-wing politics—forged a lifelong commitment to independence, self-reliance, and truth. From Thomas's early years studying to be a priest to his role today as the intellectual force behind some of the Court’s most significant decisions, Going Further traces the formation of one of our Constitution’s staunchest defenders and makes a rousing argument about why his life, his ideas, and his courage matter now more than ever.

Going Further

When Jenny Evans was in her twenties, she was heady with the excitement of a promising acting career, but her world stopped when she was sexually assaulted by a man whose name was known in households everywhere - the 'Famous Man'. But this memoir isn't about him. Or what he did. It's about Jenny. The woman behind the headlines. After feeling like she'd lost herself, Jenny picked up the pieces and paved her way to a journey full of strength in the aftermath of devastation and fought back against the systems that caused her harm. Turning her hand to journalism, she investigated, and helped expose, the jaw-dropping press abuse and police corruption we now know as the 'phone hacking scandal'. But Jenny didn't stop there, now training as a lawyer, she's working to fight for justice in a system that so horrifically fails its victims. Don't Let it Break You, Honey is a powerful, deeply personal memoir that reflects on authority in fame, media, police and the patriarchy and questions whose voices we hear, whose story is believed and the rotten core of our institutions in which we place our trust. This is a story about saving yourself and fighting for the truth. This is the story of Jenny Evans.

Living Sustainability in Higher Education offers a new way of visualising the university: as an arena in which ideas of sustainability and justice manifest in the daily interactions that occur between students, academics and the myriad communities that live and work in and around campus.Rather than content to be taught, it presents sustainability as something that is lived. Every decision, by individuals, institutions and governments, is simultaneously sustainable and unsustainable, just and unjust. They result in some societal objectives being advanced and others frustrated; one group of stakeholders advantaged over another. The book's central contention is that the totality of the university experience, and the challenges and opportunities that this comprises, enables a person to learn how to navigate these tensions throughout their lifetime.Essential reading for anyone interested in how higher education sustainability can be improved, this key title is grounded in the theoretical frameworks of sustainability learning, environmental justice and nexus. Showcasing pedagogical innovations and best practices using a global range of institutions, a powerful argument is made for higher education to move beyond its current structures and 'ways of doing' to embrace more progressive pedagogies that have sustainability and justice at their core.

Living Sustainability in Higher Education

An Instant New York Times bestsellerOne of most influential thinkers today, 'the woman who revolutionized feminism' (Guardian), offers a deeply engaging story of justice and power in America When Kimberlé Crenshaw was five years old in Ohio during the civil rights era, she was the only girl denied a lead role in her nursery play. Puzzled by her teacher's behaviour, she spoke up - and never stopped. That instinct to question power, to challenge what others accepted as fair, would shape not only her own life but the way we now understand race and gender. In Backtalker, Crenshaw traces her journey from a spirited girl in Canton, Ohio to one of the most influential legal thinkers today. Through childhood lessons and painful reckonings - a boyfriend's violence in college, a back door at Harvard Law, the silencing of women in the civil rights movement - Crenshaw learned to see the patterns others missed, refusing to stay behind the lines the world drew for her.Out of those experiences came two ideas that changed everything: intersectionality, the recognition that race, gender, and class overlap to create unique forms of discrimination; and critical race theory, the argument that racism is structural. Crenshaw's voice has since echoed through some of the most charged moments in recent history - from Anita Hill's testimony to the rise of Black Lives Matter - insisting that true justice means seeing the whole picture.Backtalker is both a memoir of awakening and the origin story of a transformative mind. Crenshaw's story is ultimately about fairness and power - and the enduring battle for America's soul.
