International Law in Asia

This book is a scholarly compilation that explores the diverse and evolving landscape of public maritime law across Asia. This book examines the peacebuilding efforts in Côte d'Ivoire after the 2002-2011 civil war, highlighting the complex dynamics of conflict resolution and social cohesion in fragile states. It analyzes historical, political, and socio-economic contexts, and provides practical insights to address inequalities and strengthen sustainable peace in Africa and beyond.


The book further scrutinizes UN-supported programs and various conflict resolution strategies, including mediation, negotiation, arbitration, and military intervention, as they are applied in Côte d'Ivoire and other African contexts. Key chapters explore the root causes of Ivorian conflicts, such as economic disparities, ethnic tensions, and political power struggles, and discuss the challenges of disarmament and economic instability. 


The book highlights the importance of community dialogue, reconciliation, and local leadership, especially women, to advance harmony and address social inequalities. It critically analyzes external influences and evaluates international and regional peacebuilding strategies. The book examines how well UNHCR’s internal culture has remained aligned with its protection mandate's core values and principles amidst a rapidly evolving external environment and how this alignment—or lack thereof—impacts its external performance in refugee emergencies. The book uses a psychodynamic approach to examine the underlying assumptions, values, beliefs and behaviours that drive UNHCR’s internal dynamics, contrasting them with the organisation’s espoused values and principles. It also analyses the tensions between UNHCR’s family culture and the agency’s rigid bureaucratic structures. I combine theoretical analysis, survey data, personal anecdotes, and narrative to describe the psychological factors that shape UNHCR’s approach to ethical standards, leadership and management practices, accountability and the processes influencing trust, care, conflict, learning, and adaptation to change. Throughout the analysis, I will leverage key psychological concepts, including the Light Triad and Dark Triad of personality traits, and data from psychometric tools such as the Hogan assessments and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). The key message of this book is that UNHCR's stated values and principles deeply contradict the beliefs and behaviours governing its operations. To mask this inconsistency, the organisation often engages in impression management and internal messaging designed to project a commitment to its protection mandate, even when reality may diverge from those declared principles. The internal dysfunctions of UNHCR undermine staff engagement and impact UNHCR’s external effectiveness, particularly in its ability to respond to emergencies and build durable solutions for displaced populations.

This book offers the first in-depth analysis of the evolution of Russia’s relations with the Global South across political, military-political, and economic domains.

Though formally part of the Global North, Russia has, since 2007, increasingly positioned itself as an independent—and often opposing—actor to the West, aligning more closely with the Global South. This volume explores Russia’s foreign policy during the 2022–2024 war with Ukraine and confrontation with the West, analyzing it at both global and regional levels.

The contributors propose models for understanding the Kremlin’s shifting strategies, including doctrinal orientations, redefinitions of national interest, and the role of personal leadership. The book also examines the tools of Russian foreign policy in the evolving geopolitical context.

It highlights key areas such as Russia’s efforts to reshape BRICS as a geo-economic counterweight to the West, its renewed activism in Sub-Saharan Africa, complex Middle Eastern diplomacy, and its strategic turn to Latin America—all within the broader pivot to the Global South.

She is the author of over 10 fiction and non-fiction books, including Genocide Culture: Cultural Habits, Ethnic Engineering and Religious Doxa (2024, Routledge); Poor Dad, Rich Daughter: Overcoming Gender Regimes and Rising as Entrepreneurs in Post-ISIS Kurdistan (2025, Lived Places Publishing_LPP). Dr. Salih has received several international awards for her work and has worked in international organizations, including the United Nations Association in Canada and Amnesty International. Her research interests encompass genocide studies, socio-political anthropology, gender and women’s studies, Bourdieu’s sociological theories, genocide and violence studies, immigration and forced displacement, Kurdish studies, Middle Eastern politics, minority affairs, ethnic conflicts, and Indigenous governance and sovereignty.

Through analysis of existing literature, media coverage and in-depth case studies, this title investigates the vulnerabilities of growing cities, the consequences citizens face in crises, and the effectiveness of DRM systems.
By depicting the serious global security problems that test systems of culture, governance, war and peace practices, this book encourages discussion around the present and future condition of cities. The volume investigates the impacts of urban warfare and argues for the implementation of effective DRM systems that are based on understanding of disaster risk in all its dimensions, achieved through well-designed training programs employing the latest teaching-learning theories and agile methodologies.
Stanis¿aw Kowalkowski is professor at War Studies University, Warsaw, Poland. He is the author and co-author of 230 different scientific studies, including ‘Determinants and possibilities of counteracting the use of improvised explosive devices’; and has participated in 12 development projects, including project dedicated to ‘Improving the Safety and Protection of Soldiers on Missions Through Research and Development in Military Medical and Technical Areas’.
Marek Wrzosek is professor at War Studies University, Warsaw, Poland. His military, research and teaching career develops in the scope of military reconnaissance systems, information systems and particularly military and non-military threats assessment. He published numerous theoretical and practical works, participated in the international research projects. His most important works include

Danuta Kämierczak is associate professor at University of The National Education Commission, Krakow, Poland. This book aims to critically examine the European Union’s peacebuilding approach, focusing on integrated conflict analysis, suggesting a new model for conflict analysis within the EU Common Security and Defence Policy. It explores recent interventions while also addressing the need for improved conflict sensitivity. It argues that greater self-reflexivity, and deeper reflection on motivations for intervention plays a critical role within multilateral efforts to address implementation gaps, encourage greater analytical capacity, suggest categories of partnership interaction with other actors and give centrality to the EUs integrated approach, reorienting away from the growing emphasis on securitisation.  is&nbsp;Adjunct Lecturer with the Edward Kennedy Institute for Conflict Intervention, Maynooth University, Republic of Ireland, and a member of the UNDP –Department of Political Affairs Peace and Development Specialist&nbsp;Roster and the OSCE Mediation Experts Roster.&nbsp;He&nbsp;has&nbsp;over 25 years’ experience in peacebuilding as an advisor, mediator and trainer with a strong track record of working to support peace processes in fragile and conflict affected countries including the Middle East, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Cyprus as well as ongoing work to support the Northern Ireland peace process.
