An unprecedented dialogue between a long-term federal prisoner and a senior prison official reveals how America’s carceral system scars everyone it touches.
No One Gets Out Unscarred argues that the prison system fails not only those it incarcerates, but also the staff who work inside it and the communities to which most will return. Rather than opposing prisoners and correctional officers, it shows how their lives are shaped by the same punitive culture, institutional incentives, and political decisions.
At its center is an extraordinary exchange between two men on opposite sides of the bars: Robert Barton, incarcerated since adolescence in high-security federal prisons, and Jack Donson, a retired Bureau of Prisons official who rose from correctional officer to case manager. Drawn from more than fifty hours of interviews, their interwoven accounts reveal a system that brutalizes prisoners while eroding staff morale, health, and judgment.
Moving beyond exposés and redemption narratives, the book examines the everyday mechanics of incarceration—lockdowns, restrictive housing, medical neglect, mental-health failures, broken grievance systems, and the hollow promise of rehabilitation—through lived experience on both sides.
Rejecting both abolitionist polemic and law-and-order defenses, it asks a pragmatic question: if more than 95 percent of incarcerated people will return home, what kind of prison system actually serves society?

Despite the centrality of international human rights law to the global rights framework, its role in human rights education (HRE) - particularly in schools and community settings - has been sidelined, dismissed as either too technical or too politically problematic. This book challenges that marginalisation head-on. It examines how legal knowledge is framed, valued, or rejected in the theory and practice of HRE, engaging critically with the prevailing trends in the field: one that gestures toward law but avoids depth, and another that disavows law entirely in favour of culturally embedded alternatives. Through a close reading of scholarship and policy, combined with insights from educational theory and socio-legal studies, the book argues for law's role as a form of "powerful knowledge" in HRE. It contends that access to and understanding of legal norms and mechanisms are not only essential for meaningful rights education but are themselves enabling rights in practice. The book will be of interest to scholars and students of human rights, legal pedagogy, and education policy, as well as practitioners developing HRE programs. It offers a timely, nuanced intervention into a field grappling with deep epistemological and political tensions, and reasserts the value of law in the struggle for rights.

The Role of Law in Human Rights Education

Drawing on broader legal-political discourses within the party-state and institutionalised academia, this book shines a light on one of the most controversial legal principles in Chinese criminal justice: the presumption of innocence. It argues the reasons why there is no presumption of innocence in China, tracing the curve, or evolution, of academic discourse about presumption of innocence against the backdrop of changing politics, or varying emphases on national conditions, from Mao Zedong to Xi Jinping. The book deepens our understanding of the trajectory of criminal justice reforms in the party-state and shows how the more open and liberal phases of the reform era opened up some space for pluralist views and constructive criticism. In comparison, the second wave of autocratisation of the system influenced the conception of the criminal and paved the way for an illiberal turn.

The text also tackles the controversial relationship between Natural Law and the 10 Commandments, debating whether positive laws should be grounded in "naturally knowable" truths or specific religious revelations in a pluralistic state. 
Looking toward the future, the authors issue a stark warning against the rise of Generative AI (GenAI) in legal adjudication. They argue that replacing human value judgments with machine-driven algorithms threatens to eliminate the discretion and relational interaction essential to true justice. To counter this, the book calls for educational reform and a shift toward "principled legal education" that prioritizes ethics, restorative justice, and a "facts first" approach. Ultimately, this work is a call to action for legal professionals, theologians, and the public to reclaim law as a framework for human flourishing-a "language of love" between the divine and the human that protects the vulnerable from the arbitrary exercise of power.

This book examines the World Anti-Doping Code in force from 2027 and changes compared to its predecessors. Some sanctions can be considered proportionate, but some may be excessively harsh. This book delves into the critical areas where punishment might overstep the bounds of proportionality. It analyses cases where sanctions may permanently end athletes' careers or ignore circumstances surrounding their cases. This book answers one important question: Could a more compassionate approach lead to a cleaner and more humane sport? The book proposes modifications to the current system. By aligning sanctions with the goals of clean sport and allowing room for reform, anti-doping organisations can build a fairer sporting world where second chances are not a forbidden dream.

It seeks to illuminate, in particular, how the European Court of Human Rights articulates the category of race, how human rights are experienced (differently) by racial minorities, and whether the European Convention on Human Rights has the tools to recognise and address racial harms. By centring race, it considers how Convention rights would look through the lens of race and ultimately interrogates if human rights law is part of the solution or part of the problem. In pursuing these inquiries, the collection brings together two fields of scholarship that have largely developed independently of each other, namely law and race, and European human rights law. This book brings together key academics and practitioners from across the country, to provide a comprehensive reflection on the under-researched area of Australian military disciplinary law. It covers a broad range of topics on the nature of military discipline law, legacy issues arising from its historical origins, contemporary challenges regarding its application in the domestic and international domains, and likely future directions. The authors are all qualified Australian lawyers with varied backgrounds as civilians, reservists and current and former permanent Australian Defence Force (ADF) legal officers. The balance of authorship ensures that the collection as a whole reflects both the internal operation and culture of the ADF, and provides an independent, critical perspective on it. The issue of military discipline in both domestic and international settings has received extensive and ongoing media and public attention in the last decade. The public interest in the topic was apparent between 2013 and 2017, when investigations of the ‘Skype’ and ‘Jedi Council’ scandals revealed that male ADF members had been producing and sharing online footage of sexual encounters with women without the consent of the women involved, and accompanied by sexist and disrespectful commentary. The implications of discipline on overseas military operations were brought to the public attention in 2016, when the Inspector-General of the Australian Defence Force commissioned an inquiry into allegations that members of the Special Operations Task Group in Afghanistan breached the Law of Armed Conflict between 2005 to 2016.Dr Kellie Toole

The book is divided into three parts, firstly looking at the current legal position on incapacity in a number of jurisdictions. It discusses the recent European project FLEUR, and the associated debates developing around whether legislation dealing with incapacity should aim to support or control the vulnerable person.
