Using an aesthetic culture and techniques termed as jihadi cool, terrorist groups have been able to recruit members from around the world, so how do we begin to respond? This book analyzes the rhetorical and ethical dynamics of a culture of jihadi cool/chic, and why these rhetorical and aesthetic techniques have been such a powerful recruitment force for particular transnational terrorist groups. No One Gets Out Unscarred argues that the prison system fails not only those it incarcerates, but also the staff who work inside it and the communities to which most will return. Rather than opposing prisoners and correctional officers, it shows how their lives are shaped by the same punitive culture, institutional incentives, and political decisions.
At its center is an extraordinary exchange between two men on opposite sides of the bars: Robert Barton, incarcerated since adolescence in high-security federal prisons, and Jack Donson, a retired Bureau of Prisons official who rose from correctional officer to case manager. Drawn from more than fifty hours of interviews, their interwoven accounts reveal a system that brutalizes prisoners while eroding staff morale, health, and judgment.
Moving beyond exposés and redemption narratives, the book examines the everyday mechanics of incarceration—lockdowns, restrictive housing, medical neglect, mental-health failures, broken grievance systems, and the hollow promise of rehabilitation—through lived experience on both sides.
Rejecting both abolitionist polemic and law-and-order defenses, it asks a pragmatic question: if more than 95 percent of incarcerated people will return home, what kind of prison system actually serves society?

No One Gets Out Unscarred

This book is the first comprehensive academic treatment of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR) and employment rights, which has a global vocation demonstrated by having been ratified by 173 States since it was adopted in 1966. Workers' rights need protection and reinforcement. To achieve this aim, international human rights standards can play an important role. The ICESCR is the most important global UN instrument in this respect. It covers a wide range of employment rights, including the right to strike, and has global application. But it is not sufficiently developed and used, and national implementation often needs improvement. Part 1 of the book analyses general issues related to the Covenant, such as context, development, challenges, influences at the global and regional levels, interpretation and procedural elements. Part 2 deals with the specific provisions which are directly linked to the employment relation. The book is based on a thorough analysis, mainly, but not exclusively, of the case law of the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR), that is monitoring the national implementation of the Covenant. Together, the chapters in this book will empower academics and practitioners in labour law to find answers to relevant and practical problems in order to better enforce and improve workers' rights. The book is the result of a project by the 'Transnational Trade Union Rights' experts Network (TTUR), linked to the European Trade Union Institute (ETUI).

The European Social Charter: A Commentary

This book analyses the ways in which Article 9 of the Aarhus Convention enables environmental access to justice in the Balkans, a region at the epicentre of extreme climate change events. Adopting a law-in-context approach, the chapters explore national cultures and driving forces shaping the implementation of Aarhus standards in Albania, Croatia, North Macedonia, Romania, Slovenia and Serbia, paving the way for their comparative assessment. The book combines EU law and the case law of the European Court of Human Rights with the bottom-up Europeanisation brought about by rising environmental protests and the activism of civil society organisations in the region. In doing so, it explores the extent to which these Balkan countries comply with requirements stemming from Article 9 of the Aarhus Convention, and whether, despite national differences, it is possible to talk about Europeanisation of access to justice in environmental matters. The interdisciplinary approach and geographical scope of the book make it an important read for academics and practitioners, as well as for the civil society sector and policy makers grappling with the normative and practical challenges around environmental access to justice - both in and beyond Europe.

Adopting a multidisciplinary approach to climate adjudication, this book addresses how adjudicators decide cases by considering the influence of psychology, philosophy, legal education, film, literature, political economy, political ecology, judicial appointments, history, and climate science on their decision-making and ultimately on the (inconsistent) outcomes in climate cases. Drawing upon the humanities, science of climate change and/or social sciences to identify extra-legal factors that may drive the decision-making processes and outcomes of climate cases, this book uses case studies from different jurisdictions across the globe, addressing climate cases decided or pending in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin and North America, and Oceania.
