Originally published in 1962, this is an important work in the history of Trade Unionism. The period covered by this volume saw momentous changes in the structure of trade unionism in the mining industry in England. In 1914 every coalfield had its own District Union. These district unions were bound together into a loose Federation. During the war years the locus of power shifted from the district associations to the national Federation. Internal arguments in the Federation based on economic and ideological grounds took place during the 1920s.A grass-roots study, this book shows why non-political trade unionism took hold in the Nottinghamshire coalfield but failed elsewhere. The importance of the Nottinghamshire pits was their economic position, which was favourable in comparison to other mines. The book examines the character and decision-making of the people who shaped the destiny of the miners in the 1920s and 30s and discusses the difficult period from 1926-1937 when the old Nottinghamshire Miners' Association was ignored by the coal-owners. The merits of district settlements which would enable the Nottinghamshire miners to maintain their relatively high wages, compared with national settlements which would tend to depress wages in the more highly paid counties are also analysed.The book will be of interest to economic and industrial historians, and students of industrial relations.

Originally published in 1961 and based on primary sources, this book examines inter-union disputes and trade union history. It reveals the human reactions involved in one of the most intractable spheres of industrial relations. The author made a number of case studies. The first demonstrates the difficult relationship of the small union with more powerful unions. The second shows that the Trades Union Congress (T.U.C.) was inclined to ignore rank-and-file wishes when it sought to settle jurisdictional disputes and how such disregard of members' feelings brought fresh problems in its train. A third study traces the birth and death of a Communist breakaway union in the London clothing industry, which demoralised and dis-organised East End workers between 1928 and 1935, while the fourth analyses the causes of secessions from a civil service union. This study also demonstrates the role of the political parties and of government when confronted with inter-union disputes.

Originally published in 1964, at a time of much public unease regarding redundancy, this book contains the results of a comprehensive survey, inspired by a suggestion of the then Minister of Labour that the mass redundancies in the Midlands motor industry of 1956 merited a full-scale investigation. The findings are based on an analysis of a 1 in 10 sample of men made redundant in Birmingham in the period. Among the matters examined are the difficulties encountered in obtaining work after redundancy; the range of geographical mobility and the role played by the then employment exchanges in securing new employment. Other chapters focus on the financial hardship caused; the resort to savings and the impact of the redundancies on the gender balance in the workforce. The impact of the dismissals on trade union affiliation is also considered, as are the men's verdicts on the 'fairness' of the selection procedure adopted.

Originally published in 1955, this book examines the social background of the community and the organization at gypsum plant in the USA in 1950 where this strike occurred. It traces the lines of authority and communication between management, foremen and workers and analyses the clique groupings of the men in the plant. The author reports on what individuals thought of their jobs, their supervisors and their associates. With this background, it is possible to understand the specific events which led to the instigation and spread of the wildcat strike - to see what touched it off, how it could have been avoided and how it had to be settled. The book concentrates on the physical, emotional and social conditions which caused the strike and from this study draw conclusions pointing toward a general theory of group tensions.This classic book will be of interest to those studying the history of industrial relations.
