The first volume of this book discusses in detail the role of banks in the economy before focussing on the provision of loans and their financing through deposits. These core activities by banks are analysed in detail, including how banks deal with strategic default, what role collateral plays in the lending process, how important relationship banking is to banks and borrowers, amongst many other topics. The implications for banks of financing long-term loans with short-term deposits are considered alongside remedies to overcome the resulting problems of this are explored. With deposits also being important for depositors as a means of making payments for goods and services, such account services are also covered in this volume.
