(Un)Silencing Academia in Times of Epistemic Conflicts

This is the first comprehensive analysis of Southeast Asian globalization and development since 1870. Interpreting over 150 years of Southeast Asian economic history, Gregg Huff traces the impact of a first period of globalisation from the 1870s to 1929, the effects of Japanese occupation during World War II and its aftermath, and a second wave of globalisation since the late 1960s. He uses vent-for-surplus, dual economy and plural society concepts and argues that the response of those in Southeast Asia to periods of transport revolutions, innovation and opportunity in the world economy translated into rapid export-led growth. Recent swift growth enabled Southeast Asia to start to 'catch up' with the world's leading countries for the first time in its history. Achievements include industrialization, genuine social progress and numerous large urban regions. Nevertheless, the book contends that Southeast Asian development in its 'miracle economies' remains incomplete.

Good Governance and Sustainable Development

Why socially responsible investment promises to make investors richer and the world better—but fails at both. Wall Street thrives by telling investors that clever financial strategies can reverse the trade-off between corporate profits and social progress. But the link between greater corporate social responsibility and improved financial performance is an illusion. Profit vs. Progress dissects the massive $30 trillion “socially responsible” or “sustainable” finance industry—and finds the emperor has no clothes. At best, sustainable investing typically delivers average rates of financial and social returns. But it makes social and environmental crises harder to overcome, by using financial gimmickry to distract our attention from real solutions. Author Brad Swanson argues that corporations in competitive markets act without moral values, and ethical investment can’t prod them to take greater social responsibility. The only way to change the outcome of the game is to change the rules. The solutions will have to come from legislatures, not corporate boardrooms. Swanson calls for public policies to make businesses better serve all of society, not just their shareholders—without blunting their edge. His recommendations include breaking up the cartel of large asset managers, rebuilding the influence of organized labor, curbing the rapacious behavior of the private equity industry, and eliminating the conflict of interest that pits corporate directors against the greater good of the community. The author shows that in previous eras of social crisis caused by corporate excess, meaningful reforms emerged through the political process. Today as well, the path forward is clear—if we have the will to follow it.

The book uncovers the dynamic relationship among China, the West, and the giant panda, rooted in over two centuries of cross-cultural encounters.Drawing from extensive fieldwork at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, the book explores how panda fandom has evolved as a result of China's participation in global capitalism, cultural exchange, and diplomatic strategy. This book aims at showing that panda fandom, although taking its shape in the Chinese nation currently, has been a consequence to the expansion of Western imperialism, colonialism, and capitalist industrialization in the Chinese community since the 18th century. It undertakes the task of inquiring how the Chinese communities, through the figure of the giant panda, have responded and made sense of this modern transformation. The book is loosely organized around the chronological order of the development of the panda fandom and can be divided into two parts. The first part explains the emergence of the panda fandom, and the second part deals with interviews. Through a rich blend of personal narratives, historical documents, daily observations, and carefully crafted interviews, it provides a fresh perspective on how cuteness, biopower, and nationalism shape both Chinese identity and the lived experiences of these fans. Based on an intimate look at the bond between panda fans and their beloved animal, the book also relates the panda fandom to theories of the more-than-human and multispecies world.The book will be beneficial to students and academicians interested in fan studies, popular culture, animal-human relations, conservation, and the consumption of animals.
