The first collection of critical writings on the work of the influential contemporary French artist Pierre Huyghe. Influenced by wide-ranging ideas from land art and institutional critique to experimental cinematic practices and narrative film, the groundbreaking work of Pierre Huyghe since the early 1990s has arguably, even indelibly, altered the landscape of contemporary art. The French artist works at the beguiling intersection of fiction and reality, representation and performance, spectacle and memory, chance and agency, living organisms and technological entities. As formats and discourses of cinema (be it Godard or Lumet) and architecture, (invented or existing) holidays and games, (puppet) theatre and opera, fairy tales and (travel) literature, museology and computer technology, life sciences and popular culture (like Manga comics or Disney movies) are renegotiated in Huyghe’s variegated projects, the methods and modalities of producing, exposing, and experiencing art, in turn, come under both critical scrutiny and allegorical speculation. The essays and interviews by preeminent scholars, critics, and curators, including Benjamin Buchloh, David Joselit, and Molly Nesbit, compiled in this volume trace the trajectory of Huyghe’s practice over the last three decades, from the artist’s earlier engagements with the built environment, the temporalities of cinema and television, the customs of social communities, and the volatile property relations in global media culture, to his most recent and much-discussed ecological redefinitions of the objects and sites of art. At the same time these texts and conversations ponder and gauge the far-reaching implications of Huyghe’s many seminal artworks for the history, theory, and ontology of art in the early twenty-first century.

What goals are still feasible for the politics of emancipation on a ruined planet? This is where we are. Today's techno-oligarchs are not concerned with saving the planet; rather, they have accepted the end of progress and are focused on safeguarding their wealth in the face of an impending political and ecological collapse. Artificial intelligence and algorithms make decisions for us. Climate breakdown has long steamed past the wreckage of the Paris Agreement. Perhaps the accelerationists have the right idea. Accelerationism - which aims to resolve the current crisis through the intensification of technological development - is the only philosophy not clinging to the now-extinct idea of progress. The idea has gained ground on both the left and right: but the right-wing is shot through with misanthropy, while the left remains entangled in a faith in technological progress and the domination of nature. Transcending capitalism at the end of progress requires a synthesis of the two. The result of this synthesis: Dark Socialism. From 'rock star philosopher' Kohei Saito comes an anticapitalist clarion call for our breakneck times, channeling despair into a socialist project equal to the end of progress.

This book presents an insight into the relationship between liberal democratic legality and responding to extreme situations. The uneasy relationship between liberal democracy’s rule of law and extraordinary measures by government have long provided a premise for contentious legal and political discourse. It is amidst this densely treaded theme, whereby this book turns to Europe’s democratic past in an attempt to mitigate any seemingly irrevocable conflicts. Largely overlooked, and yet ultimately the primary source of the contemporary liberal democratic legal order, democracy appears as a legal reality that advocates for its own principles in response to extreme threats.
 
 From the floors of the National Convention in Paris during the French revolutionary years of the late 18th century, Roman legal principles would be espoused by Robespierre and his contemporaries when heralding in the ‘new’ legal reality of democracy. Voices from Paris and the National Assembly of today on the other hand embrace principles of canon law when advocating for extraordinary ‘necessary measures’ that ultimately rely upon a determination of the ‘public common good’ when responding to extreme situations. In recognizing the contrast between ‘democratic-revolutionary tradition’s’ reliance upon Roman legal principles, as opposed to ‘constitutional monarchy tradition’s’ reliance upon canon law principles, this book presents to the reader a unique opportunity to understand how contemporary European legal tradition ultimately arises as a result of two legal worlds.&nbsp;

Extraordinary Governance in European Legal Tradition

The book explains the most significant cases and jurisprudence emerging from the 32-year record of the judicial institutions highlighted in the book. It engages the readers with the human stories behind the legal rulings so that the context and drama are properly introduced and understood. We will describe the principles of international law emerging from and being strengthened by the jurisprudence of tribunal judges. These include: the legal authority of the UN Security Council, the UN General Assembly, and regional organizations like the European Union and the Council of Europe to create&nbsp;
 ad hoc
 or hybrid war crimes tribunals; greater precision and context in defining each category and listing of atrocity crimes, including the full range of genocide and torture and when either crime encompasses rape, the range of situations that constitute genocide and crimes against humanity, forced marriage as a crime against humanity, torture as a 
 jus cogens
 principle, hate speech as persecution, and enslavement; elaborating modalities of individual criminal responsibility about command responsibility, aiding and abetting, and co-perpetration or joint criminal enterprise; developing new principles regulating non-international armed conflicts and the status of non-state groups under international law; establishing clearer intent (
 mens rea
 ) requirements for crimes against humanity and genocide; applying judicial notice to confirm the obvious reality that atrocity crimes on a massive scale occurred in a particular situation; establishing a broad range of human rights protections and the responsibility of states to ensure their enforcement.
 This book tells the story of pathbreaking developments in select cases litigated before the International Court of Justice, five special purpose atrocity crimes tribunals, the International Criminal Court, and the European, Inter-American and African human rights courts, as well as what to anticipate with the newly-created Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine. The protection of human rights as an obligation of national governments is reflected in major cases of the European Court of Human Rights, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, and the African Court of Human and Peoples’ Rights.

This book examines how law and regulation respond to digital transformation in South and Southeast Asia, with particular attention to Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, and India. Across these jurisdictions, digital transformation is widely promoted as a pathway to economic growth, social inclusion, and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Yet the same process also produces new regulatory tensions: between innovation and control, market expansion and public accountability, technological adoption and local institutional capacity.
 
 Bringing together country studies and sector-based analyses, the book investigates how legal systems in the region are adapting to the rise of digital platforms, data-driven markets, financial technologies, artificial intelligence, and new forms of online governance. It pays close attention to the gap between law-on-the-books and law-in-practice, showing how formal legal reforms are shaped by local political economies, administrative practices, business interests, and social conditions.
