Practices of tracking and tracing have a long history, yet they are expanding in scale and scope in the digital age with important consequences for the accounts which shape our organizational and everyday lives. At a time when the benefits of traceability for assuring quality, maintaining security, and supporting knowledge-creation must be balanced with needs for privacy and accountability, Economy of Traces delivers an analysis of the implications of traceability for the many accounts we live by. Issues about why we trace, what we trace, and how we trace have become critical, and the book draws upon thinking in accounting, philosophy, and sociology to understand the different facets of traceability, including connectivity, organization, governance, risk, personhood, and knowledge generation. Through these themes, the book locates a key tension at the heart of our digital economy of traces; namely, that the more we are technically able to produce and track traces of human behaviour, the more fragile the traditional organizational forms of human oversight and accountability become. Economy of Traces develops a traceological theory of accounting to understand this tension and how tracking and oversight, while intertwined, are changing their mix in the digital age. In particular, audit trails which have traditionally underpinned human capacities for observation and governance, are being displaced and de-centered. Economy of Traces avoids both wholesale humanist critique of digital technologies on the one hand and uncritical celebration of their augmenting power on the other, in order to understand and theorize the dynamics of change in the organization of traceability and accounts production.

In The Philosophy of Language in Islamic Legal Theory Nora Kalbarczyk examines the influential jurisprudential work al-Maḥṣūl fī ʿilm uṣūl al-fiqh (d. 1210). By means of a detailed analysis of the linguistic treatise of this work she highlights the impact of the philosophical tradition on Islamic legal theory (uṣūl al-fiqh) in the so-called post-Avicennian era (11th-14th c.). Her main focus lies on a classification of signification (dalāla) that can be traced back to Ibn Sīnā (lat. Avicenna, d. 1037): a word may signify a meaning by way of congruence (muṭābaqa), containment (taḍammun) or implication (iltizām). The author shows how Faḫr ad-dīn ar-Rāzī develops - on the basis of the Avicennian theory of signification - a hermeneutic toolbox which is not only relevant in the context of Arabic philosophy but also useful for different questions of Islamic legal theory.

Over the last twenty-five years, the concept of per-sonhood has become central to many contentious debates. Corporations have won free speech protections, as if they were individuals. The right to life or freedom has been claimed on behalf of fetuses, trees, and elephants. The fund of human rights is spilling over into the nonhuman. The Problem of Personhood reveals the unsettling consequences of granting rights to imagined persons, such as Sophia the robot citizen or New Zealand’s Whanganui River. Synthesizing the political and phil­osophical debates on personhood and drawing on a varied cast of thinkers that includes Simone Weil, Hannah Arendt, and Dr. Seuss, Lisa Siraganian un­covers the disturbing impact of this contemporary development. Awarding rights to robots and rivers all too easily becomes a legal tool to turn people into capital. When robot Sophia is made a citizen, "she" is transformed into a subject in the law without the corre­sponding legal duties that protect us from her. At the root of this trend is the US Supreme Court’s Citizens United ruling that grants First Amendment rights to corporations as if they were individuals. The result has not been the transformation of things into humans so much as humans into things, when animals and the environment would be better protected with reference to our humanity rather than to theirs.
