Shawcross E: The People's Emperor

The People's Emperor

The Unlikely Rise and Spectacular Fall of Napoleon III

Scholars of Commercial Law

Revealing the people behind the Rothschild name, The Rothschilds explores the lives and legacy of one of the best-known and most impactful families in modern history. The Rothschild name has long been synonymous with wealth and privilege, but as Jews the family has also been dogged by prejudice and hatred. Antisemitism followed them from their earliest beginnings in the oppressive Jewish ghetto of Frankfurt, where Jews were not allowed out after nightfall, to the lofty summits of high finance, art, and culture. However, behind the myths, the glamor, and the conspiracy theories are a group of relatives whose individualism, personalities and occasional eccentricities have been obscured by their shared surname.

In The Rothschilds, Harry Freedman delves into their lives on a historical tour, marked by an unfailing attention to the influence of individual family members on world events.

We travel from the genesis of the Rothschild international banking empire to the impact of individual Rothschilds in multiple fields over the past 250 years.

Spanning war, politics and the industrial revolution, art, architecture and interior design, zoology, smuggling, and counter-terrorism and the ongoing struggle against entrenched anti-Jewish bigotry in different historical eras and places.

The Rothschilds reveals a truly new story of a very old family, making a great contribution both to history and our understanding of a dynasty that has shaped our world.

The Untold Family Story

The Rothschilds

From the award-winning and Sunday Times bestselling author of Material World, a story that will take you from ancient civilizations, empire and globalisation through to the most influential geopolitical issue of our times. The story of trade is the story of humanity. From the copper in Mesopotamian ploughs to the silicon atoms within the chip inside your smartphone, intricate global trading networks have evolved over millennia to fulfil the distinctly human desire to buy and sell.Today, the volume of trade bestriding the planet is unprecedented. Yet, as fractures in the global order emerge - from an era of globalisation and untrammelled flows of goods and money to a new world of restrictions, intervention and, possibly, war - understanding this fundamental shift to the dominant economic consensus is more important than ever.Ed Conway tells this extraordinary story through these three commonplace products - bread, cloth and cars. With a compelling blend of economic history and first-hand access to key figures and institutions, he takes us from policy treaties to ground level to show us the people who make, ship and sometimes smuggle the products we buy on a daily basis.Discover the hidden, shifting trade world behind everything you see around you.

Geburtstag

Na ja, Anararchismus?

Reciprocity begins with a simple but unsettling question: why have we come to believe that human beings are naturally self-interested, competitive and acquisitive? This galvanising, perspective-shifting book dismantles the myth of Homo economicus to show us the way towards a world whose realities align with our true selves.Drawing on a variety of disciplines, including anthropology, archaeology, evolutionary biology, psychology, economics and social epidemiology, Richard Wilkinson demonstrates that the characteristics which we assume to be our human nature are in fact effects of the market societies we live in. He traces how various systems of exchange have created profoundly different forms of social life throughout the course of history, shaping our behaviours, motivations, and the kinds of people we become. Though it may often feel like it, the avarice and oppressions that defines the twenty-first century are not an unchangeable reality we simply have to live with. The book explains why inequality, status competition and consumerism hold so much power over us and reveals the depths to which these forces are entwined with the ever-rising crises of mental illness, political polarisation and environmental destruction. Rather than asking how we can make individuals behave better, it makes a compelling case for restructuring our societies to make life happier, meaningful and more fulfilling for one and all.Rigorously researched, bracingly practical and full of passion and hope in equal measure, Reciprocity offers a bold reinterpretation of the world we live in. It equips us with the necessary tools to look beyond and remake it in our very own, amiably human image.

Reclaiming Our Humanity from the Market

In How the Regime Rules, New York Times bestselling author Christopher Rufo delivers a bold, unflinching examination of how America’s founding spirit was transformed—and, in his telling, betrayed—by the rise of modern bureaucratic power. In How the Regime Rules, Christopher F. Rufo—the New York Times bestselling author who nuked Critical Race Theory, gutted DEI in corporate boardrooms, put Somali fraud on the map, and toppled the president of Harvard—delivers his most explosive work yet: a manifesto for the evolving right and a scorched-earth blueprint to shatter the invisible power structure that now governs America. We all know the Regime. It’s the interlocking web of the Deep State bureaucracy, biased media, corrupted academia, and corporate middle managers that enforces conformity, doles out status to favorites, and crushes dissent. Instead of ruling by winning elections, the Regime rules through cultural capture—dictating what you are allowed to say, think, and believe. Rufo strips back the curtain on their operation, turning the Left’s own playbook against them to show how a radical minority seized the commanding heights of American life. He tracks the bureaucratic rot that traded our founding spirit for a system of managed decline, from the administrative state’s silent coup to the ideological hijacking of our elite institutions. But the time for grievance-filled exposés is past. Now is the time to build real, lasting political power. The old GOP establishment failed because it spent decades begging for a seat at the Regime’s table—only to be mocked, then discarded. The "New Right" too often gets distracted by petty revenge and backward-looking saltiness. Rufo rejects both. Instead, he offers a high-energy, forward-looking vision: building a counter-elite that is rooted in real community, culturally dominant, relentlessly entrepreneurial, and unapologetically patriotic—just like the Founding Fathers. Patriots are already building independent businesses, parallel media ecosystems, homeschool networks, and tech startups that operate entirely outside the Regime’s thumb. Rufo provides a practical counterrevolution roadmap—dismantling the power of bloated bureaucracies, purging left-wing racialism from federal agencies, restoring merit in our universities, and shifting the fight from pure culture wars to the economic realities of the working man. Build it well—make it vibrant, profitable, and bold—and the American people will follow in droves. How the Regime Rules moves us past easy wins or empty nostalgia. It equips us with the strategy, tactics, and spirit required for total national reconstruction. Drawing on his hard-won victories and a cold-blooded analysis of how power actually works, Rufo shows how a new generation can seize the initiative, recapture the American spirit, and restore self-government.

'Few historians write with Serhii Plokhy's authority, clarity or global vision... Essential reading, and a marvellous book' Peter FrankopanFrom the bestselling author of Chernobyl comes a sweeping history of the geopolitics behind the nuclear arms race, from the first atomic bomb to today On 16 July 1945, the Nuclear Age began with the explosion of the first atomic bomb and the words of J. Robert Oppenheimer: 'Now I am become Death, the Destroyer of Worlds.' While the threat of mutually assured destruction kept a lid on a simmering and tense geopolitical landscape, events like the Chernobyl disaster and near-misses like the Cuban Missile Crisis showed that total destruction was only ever one malfunction, mistake, or miscommunication away. Now, as governments re-arm their nuclear arsenals, treaties designed to limit the acquisition and use of nuclear weapons fall away, and nuclear weapons come increasingly within reach of non-state actors, we are on the brink of a renaissance of the nuclear industry. In The Nuclear Age, acclaimed historian Serhii Plokhy paints an intricate picture of a world governed by fear. From the first artificial splitting of the atom in 1917 and the race to create the first atomic bomb in World War II, through the fraught arms race of the Cold War, to the imperialism, neo-colonial motivation and wars being waged today, the threat posed by nuclear weapons is as pertinent as ever.As he examines the motivations of key players, Plokhy confronts the crucial question of our age: what can we learn from the first nuclear arms race that can help us to stop the new one?

“Narrative history at its best.” —Air Mail The gripping, definitive history of the Hindenburg disaster, the rise of the Nazis, and the road to World War II as never before told On the evening of May 6, 1937, the majestic German zeppelin Hindenburg arrived before cheering crowds in Lakehurst, New Jersey, when suddenly, a titanic inferno lit up the sky. Thirty-four seconds later, the greatest airship ever to take flight was gone, destroyed in a ferocious blaze and eternally seared into historical memory. Acclaimed historian Catherine Grace Katz unites groundbreaking research with thrilling narrative that situates this famous disaster squarely on the collision course between the decade’s two prevailing currents. The Hindenburg began as a symbol of hope and progress, a gleaming technological marvel in the nascent age of aviation. But soon, the airship of dreams became a propaganda tool powering the rising Nazi regime. In this sweeping drama, Katz illustrates the story of the Hindenburg through the captivating passengers and crew caught in the grip of fate: an adventurous heiress, a renowned vaudeville star, a Chicago industrialist with German Jewish roots, an esteemed zeppelin captain, and a young cabin boy on his first voyage to the United States. Meanwhile, on the ground, two intrepid journalists’ reporting on the Hindenburg fundamentally changed breaking news, paving the way for modern media. In this rigorously researched, ticking-clock account, Shadow Before the Flame offers a portrait of an era when illusions of peace, fueled by the hubris of invention, hovered in suspended time as the clouds of an inevitable war loomed on the horizon. Above all, it is a story of humanity and of lives forever changed by a moment that served as a harbinger for the global conflagration yet to come.

The Hindenburg Disaster and the Prelude to War

Shadow Before the Flame

A cult masterpiece and darkly comic tale of survival on the high seas by an enigmatic bestselling author believed to have inspired Roberto Bolaño’s 2666 A Penguin Classic Stateless and stranded after he loses his passport, sailor Gerald Gales flees arrest and persecution across Europe, until he finally finds work on the Yorikke, a decrepit “death ship” bound for destruction. Condemned to stoke the furnaces, Gales must navigate a labyrinth of surreal rules and the brutal realities of life at sea if he is to make it out alive. First published in 1926 and thought to bear the traces of the mysterious author B. Traven’s own experience of migrating to Mexico, The Death Ship is a darkly absurd, raging tale about what it takes to survive when life is cheap. Penguin Classics is the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world, representing a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

The Death Ship

Most people would say that politics is a field guided by rational thought, but
that is only partly true. Rational thinking certainly plays an important role, yet
political decisions both influence and are influenced by many aspects of our
lives. Therefore, emotions can never be completely excluded from politics.

This book explores the complex relationship between emotions and rational
reasoning in politics - from social media posts to political discussions.
It shows how emotions can be used to manipulate decisions, but also how they can
enrich and strengthen them. To avoid the negative side of emotional influence,
we must understand our own emotions and learn how to use them meaningfully
in political contexts.

Drawing on studies, theories, and real-world examples, it uncovers how
emotions shape today's political landscape and offers practical
ideas and approaches to help recognize hidden emotions and apply them
consciously for better political outcomes. Only by gaining a deeper
understanding of our emotions and needs can we navigate the political world
with clarity and a mindset that ultimately improves our quality of life.

Emotions in Politics

"A bombshell new biography." —People MagazineA revelatory portrait of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., chronicling his battles with addiction and his astonishing journey from entitled scion to environmental activist to a prominent member of the president's cabinet, based on RFK Jr.’s secret journals and the author’s interviews with dozens of sources close to him.Born into one of the most storied families in American history, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was fourteen years old when his father was assassinated. He has since spent his life grappling with the weight of his family’s legacy. Like his martyred father, RFK Jr. longs to be a hero, but he has struggled with his demons. “I knew daddy was watching me, and that he loved me,” he wrote in a diary entry, “But I also felt I was disappointing him.”Those thoughts were set down in his diary when he was serving out a monthlong prison term in Puerto Rico for civil disobedience. The experience changed his life. Alone in his cell, he was forced to grapple with his personal conflicts—his addictions to drugs and women—but also to question everything that he and his family once held sacred, including their allegiance to the Democratic Party, which had sustained the Kennedy family for generations.RFK Jr. became disillusioned with many of the party’s leaders even as he committed himself to carving out a distinct identity as a public servant. He would vow to step up his environmental crusade, later establishing himself as a public health critic with controversial views on vaccines. He became a political maverick. But even now, in his seventies, and after an unexpected pivot into the national spotlight as a political and cultural figure at odds with both the Democratic Party and his family, RFK Jr. is still fighting to live up to the legacy of his father.Award-winning journalist Isabel Vincent draws on exclusive access to RFK Jr.’s personal diaries, candid interviews, and previously unreleased material, providing an unparalleled view of the life and mind of one of the most divisive individuals in America today, a deeply flawed man whose public life has often been in conflict with his private battles.
