The bans on chemical and biological weapons, upheld by the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) and the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC), are foundational to global disarmament and international security. However, these regimes are under increasing strain due to recent violations, such as chemical attacks in Syria and targeted poisonings in Europe, as well as allegations linked to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Furthermore, broader institutional challenges are undermining arms control efforts. This book seeks to strengthen the norms against chemical and biological weapons by offering in-depth insight into the interconnectivity of international, domestic, and professional norms that support and enforce these prohibitions.

From an acclaimed architect and investigator, a devastating, meticulous account of the history of Israel's destruction of Gaza 'Urgent and essential' DAVID WENGROW 'Extraordinary' ILAN PAPPÉ Eyal Weizman is one of the world's leading experts on the relationship between violence, conflict and the environment, both built and natural. As director of the organisation Forensic Architecture, he and his team of interdisciplinary researchers document acts of state crimes and human rights violations around the world. Since 2023, the group has worked to produce evidence for the International Court of Justice's genocide case against Israel. This book demonstrates how legal knowledge is a vital, empowering tool in human rights education. Despite the centrality of international human rights law to the global rights framework, its role in human rights education (HRE) - particularly in schools and community settings - has been sidelined, dismissed as either too technical or too politically problematic. This book challenges that marginalisation head-on. It examines how legal knowledge is framed, valued, or rejected in the theory and practice of HRE, engaging critically with the prevailing trends in the field: one that gestures toward law but avoids depth, and another that disavows law entirely in favour of culturally embedded alternatives. Through a close reading of scholarship and policy, combined with insights from educational theory and socio-legal studies, the book argues for law's role as a form of "powerful knowledge" in HRE. It contends that access to and understanding of legal norms and mechanisms are not only essential for meaningful rights education but are themselves enabling rights in practice. The book will be of interest to scholars and students of human rights, legal pedagogy, and education policy, as well as practitioners developing HRE programs. It offers a timely, nuanced intervention into a field grappling with deep epistemological and political tensions, and reasserts the value of law in the struggle for rights.

Human Rights Law in Perspective

Palestinians have used the language of human rights to articulate their struggle against the Israeli occupation and internationalise the injustices they face. Palestinian young people learning about human rights at school experience a dissonance between the aspirational and internationalised framework of those norms and the layers of injustice of their own lived experience. Drawing on research in the occupied West Bank, this book explores the three layers of marginalisation faced by Palestinian young people - the Israeli occupation that denies them their humanity; the Palestinian pseudo-state that denies them a voice; and patriarchal structures that deny them agency - to show how these barriers influence their understanding of, and scepticism towards, human rights. Influenced by decolonial theories, this book illuminates how space needs to be created for the counter-narratives of the oppressed in human rights discourse, which may not align with more conventional representations of human rights. It contends that human rights and, by extension, human rights education in the Palestinian context (and beyond) needs to be critiqued, decolonised and ultimately transformed.
