When Machines Act

Kamal Shair's book is a classic rags to riches story: the village boy, who with determination and education, achieves business success, wealth, more wealth, and then influence and power. What makes it unusual is that it emanates from the Arab world. Rarely among Arabs have individuals from thoroughly modest backgrounds, with no access to links, networks or connections become truly global commercial players. Shair was born in a small town in what was then Transjordan and dragged himself through school (his mother was illiterate), moved to college in Beirut, then sailed off to America (Michigan and Yale) and returned to the Middle East to create a multinational corporate empire engaged in trade, construction and manufacturing. Dar al Handasah - Arabic for House of Engineers - was founded in a small flat in Beirut and today, spans the globe with offices in 37 countries. In its early years, Dar al Handasah fought off competition from established western consultancies to win contracts for prestige engineering throughout the Middle East. Eventually, its activities extended further to Europe, the United States, Africa and Asia. By not following the usual pattern of patronage and favours, Kamal Shair applied a fresh kind of ethic in an environment with a loosely-structured business ethic. In the process, he lived through and witnessed at first hand and at close quarters some of the most dramatic events of the modern Arab world. This is quite an extraordinary tale and a very original prism through which to read the turbulent post-World War II history of the Middle East. At the same time we see the growth, despite all the odds, of one of the world's great engineering and business enterprises in a narrative of epic and inspirational proportions.

This edited volume explores one of the defining phenomena of the contemporary global economy: the internationalisation of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Once constrained by limited resources, geographic distance, and restricted market access, SMEs now operate in interconnected international ecosystems shaped by globalization, digital technologies, and evolving institutional environments. Yet international expansion remains complex, especially across culturally diverse and institutionally heterogeneous contexts.
 
 Bringing together perspectives from international business, institutional theory, cross-cultural management, entrepreneurship, and digital transformation, this volume examines how informal institutions, cultural intelligence, and digitisation influence SME internationalisation. With a comparative focus on Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and Asia, it demonstrates how informal institutions can compensate for institutional voids while fostering innovation. By emphasizing "soft infrastructure" as a strategic asset, the book challenges approaches that prioritize formal institutions alone and offers a more comprehensive framework for understanding SME growth across borders.
 Robert Dygas
 , PhD, Assistant Professor at SGH Warsaw School of Economics, specializes in geoeconomics, international business, and Asian economies. He has over 23 years of professional experience in multinational corporations across IT, telecommunications, and the public sector, and has edited and co-authored several international research monographs.
 Magda Górska Grginović
 , PhD, Assistant Professor at SGH Warsaw School of Economics, has over 15 years of experience in manufacturing firms and multinational corporations. Her research focuses on SME internationalisation, entrepreneurship, digital and green transitions, competitiveness, resilience, and sustainability.
 Elena-Mădălina Vătămănescu
 , PhD, Full Professor at the National University of Political Studies and Public Administration (SNSPA), Bucharest, research SME internationalisation, knowledge management, intellectual capital, entrepreneurial communication, and sustainability. She has published over 100 scholarly works.
 Prana Krishna Biswas
 , Visiting Professor at Nalanda University, India, has over 42 years of experience in management education. His expertise includes public policy, social entrepreneurship, ESG, sustainability, and development management. He has published extensively and completed more than 55 funded research projects

For American workers, the social contract is broken. This book gives a firsthand view of where the breaks occurred, and a prescription for rebuilding it to give workers their due. With AI making the decisions and CEOs and moguls making the money, sometimes it seems that most workers today might as well be drones. If not for a long string of missed opportunities over the last 50 years, it might have been different. In Roads Not Taken, Thomas Kochan reviews the turning points where the social contract fractured and broke, reducing workers’ voices as well as their compensation, benefits, and status. And in the lessons learned from these historical examples, he identifies the foundation for building a new labor relations system that ensures workers will share in the benefits from AI and puts America on course for an innovative and durable social contract at work. As a longtime advisor to government, labor, and management leaders, Kochan offers an eyewitness perspective on the mounting mistakes made in America’s labor relations system beginning, roughly, with Ronald Reagan’s firing of striking air traffic controllers in 1981.
