This is the first book to present a new approach of institutional design as an evolutionary applied policy based on coherent conceptualization and methodology, and to study the actuality and implications of diversifying real/virtual community currencies. In contrast to a de facto standard theory, an institutional ecosystem can be composed of various institutions that continue to coexist with changing relative frequencies. In this view, diversified monetary institutions with local rules are feasible and realistic. Community currencies are worldwide attempts to redress such problems as financial instability, chronic stagnation, and decline of communities caused by globalization of the economy. Considering those alternative movements as a new type of policy, "evolutionist institutional design", this book clarifies the feasibility and significance of community currencies in the current era of globalization. The book also provides a better understanding than mainstream approaches of such platform institutions as money that determine fundamental means of cognition and action of interacting agents. Money is a symbolically generalized communication medium in the mesodomain that mediates between socioeconomic performance and patterns in the macrodomain and motives and cognitive frameworks in the microdomain. Conventional national systems of money and finance are platform institutions that determine basic replicators for a capitalistic market economy to evolve. In contrast, community currencies conveying both economic and social/cultural values are distinct platform institutions that are expected to endogenously change such basic replicators in outer and inner institutions for agents to a noncapitalistic market economy. These currencies are considered target institutions for "media design" in the framework of evolutionist institutional design.

There has been an increasing movement to place results at the heart of the agenda for social investments and development. Though development has a compelling value proposition a year of life can often be saved for a few hundred dollars there is skepticism to its ability to measure and manage programs for results. It is this skepticism which is at the heart of debates on the future of development. Managing Development for Results describes the results agenda in development, measurement and management approaches, and challenges on the ground. It is an easily accessible book which provides a comprehensive view on the innovative approach used to demonstrate compelling development results. The first section of the book covers the history and key components of the results agenda. The second section assesses how this is put into practice with innovative examples from global initiatives, foundations, civil society, private sector and country case studies. Finally, the book assesses the future role of the results-based agenda for a wide variety of development actors. It argues that results provide a "common currency" to coordinate and focus increasingly diverse partners on the core value of development, and communicate this to a wider audience. How results are built into development programs and the future development agenda will be illustrated as well. It would also aim to appeal to a general audience interested in the future of development and whether it can achieve compelling results.

New Frontiers in Regional Science: Asian Perspectives

The primary objective of this book is to address a formal representation of household economy in welfare economics in spatial terms. Although it has been argued since the nineteenth century that in exploring a reasonable indicator to measure the real welfare level of households, several difficulties remain to be faced in economic theory. The most relevant method in this specific topic is social welfare function. While various types of indicators were historically developed and improved as a replacement of existing economic growth indicators such as GDP and GRP using social welfare function, there still is a problem with evaluating the individual's utility as an aggregate term. As an alternative method of measuring the real welfare level of households, location theory may be a possibility for solving some potentially problematic issues. To be precise, location theory requires the inclusion of notions of transportation costs, spatially constrained internal and external economies, and other distance-related variables. From the standpoint of equality, this specific approach enables an analysis to investigate spatial differentiation. In other words, spatial differentiation of households can be interpreted as spatial consumer exclusion. Hence, the real welfare level of households can be measured by means of the accessibility of goods and services, of which there are several types, such as essential and luxury ones. As a result, spatial distribution of goods and services depending on their types can be considered a component of social welfare function. The topics addressed in the book include social welfare function in spatial terms, location theory related to firms and households, attractiveness of regions, economic and social infrastructure elements, and sustainable growth and development of regions.

Ronald Coase's Nobel work outlined gains by reducing transaction costs and promoting property rights and markets to confront externalities. Adjudicating Climate Change

Why unfettered free-market capitalism endangers democracy—and what to do about it. In Private Power and Democracy’s Decline, Mordecai Kurz explores the relationship between free-market capitalism and democracy. He shows that technology has made capitalism different from what was envisioned in the Age of Enlightenment. Technology creates centers of market power and monopoly concentration that result in a society in which some people are enriched immensely while many workers’ livelihoods are often destroyed. Contrary to conventional thinking, technological competition does not remove market power, which becomes a permanent fixture of free-market capitalism. Such private power creates political inequality and generates forces that cause democracy’s decline and possible destruction. Applying these ideas to the US, Kurz shows that today’s problems begin in the 1980s with the policy of unregulated free-market capitalism. Coupled with the information technology revolution, this created a techno-winner-takes-all economy—leading to a second Gilded Age of unsustainable inequality and extreme political polarization. In the last 50 years, the economy “boomed” for some while leaving the majority of America’s workers behind. Kurz concludes that only regulated capitalism can support democracy so that the benefits of technology are more equally shared and no person’s livelihood is destroyed to enable others to be enriched. To save democracy, he proposes a “restoration-of-livelihood” policy, offering firms managerial flexibility to maintain rising productivity while ensuring that technology does not destroy the livelihood of others.
