This open access book is a cultural history of lawsuits that explains the development of French performance rights from la Belle Époque, via the roaring Twenties, and into Post-War France. It does so by analysing the ways in which performers, composers, and playwrights used French court rooms, newspaper scandals, and international conferences to claim their rights to create and control musical and theatrical performance. In 19th-century France, composers and playwrights organised in member-run societies that successfully used authors' rights legislation to curb the power of theatre managers. Towards the turn of the 20th century, these so-called collective management organisations had transformed French cultural industries by building out structures of royalty collection and improving litigation practices. From the café-concert culture in 19th-century Montmartre, the rise of modern celebrity culture and mass media, to the French governments' management of radio entertainment in the interwar period, the book traces precedent-setting litigation that defined who creates and controls performance. The book challenges previous narratives that centre the individualisation of authors in the expansion of the international copyright regime, while neglecting performers. Instead, it reveals the ways in which the personality and individuality of performers have played a constitutive role in discourses about genius, technology, and legal categories. Performance as Intellectual Property is for anyone interested in the emerging of modern European cultural industries and the relationships between intellectual property systems, creativity, and art. Where and how we pay is changing dramatically. This timely, innovative book navigates the so-called 'Cambrian explosion' of FinTech companies and more specifically to the emergence of Blockchain technologies and cryptocurrencies through the lens of the case of Ripple, a company in the field of cryptoassets and cross-border payments. Combining STS with human geography and political economy, it navigates the maelstrom of proliferating new and old payment infrastructure, to develop a theoretical and empirical 'infrastructural inversion' of money. Money does not just flow through or behave like an infrastructure, but rather it is an infrastructure, because it is predicated upon the existence of accounting and payment infrastructures of memory for its very existence. Using the concepts of active forms and dispositions from design and architecture, this nuanced book analyses how money's infrastructures act in the world materially, spatially, as objects and subjects of desire and as political and economic machines. If we want new forms of money for new forms of society, we need to think holistically and ecologically about the complex combinations of materiality, space, desire and political economies that money generates and propagates. Tracing the trajectory of a cryptoasset project from an alternative credit system to an interbank, cross-border company, the book moves beyond a Bitcoin-centric view of money. It reveals how alternative and mainstream, networked and sovereign forms of money have long been intertwined.

This book examines how ideological factionalism, cultural conflicts, and competing visions of justice have shaped America’s perception of multiculturalism. The author believes that the flash points disrupting America stem from feeling that one’s group is being disrespected, whether by threatening it with violence, or, more subtly, by a cold, exclusionary pattern. Building on the author's concept of religious humanism, the book offers a systematic explanation of the roots of factionalism and offers new pathways for embracing multiculturalism. In the process, the author critiques mainstream models of utility theory and identity politics, proposing a revised framework that headlines the search for meaning as the dominant soulful force shaping behavior. &nbsp;In later chapters, the focus shifts towards making multiculturalism work. Proposed reforms are grounded in civic purpose, offering economists, policymakers, and the public practical tools necessary to promote constructive dialogue and institutional inclusion. Reframing Multiculturalism in the United States

This is a study of elite English men of English law and the methods they used to retain and justify their power and privilege, through controlling the story of the legal person. It looks at how these men of legal authority thought of themselves and their institution; how they studied and explained law; and how they put themselves in the middle of it, as the standard human in need of legal regulation and protection and in charge of that regulation and protection, and assigned to women an inferior legal role and being. The main strategy used to do all this was manipulation of the concept of 'the legal person'. From the 1860s to the 1920s the courts declared that women were not 'persons' who could exercise public power - to vote, to sit in Parliament, to gain degrees, to be lawyers. Up to the end of the 20th century, and into the 21st, women's personhood remained precarious in the private sphere, for rape was excused within a marriage and female reproduction remained under state control (as it still does). The book examines the active exclusion of women from the means of making legal meaning, especially the ability to shape law's central concept and shows the epistemological effects of this sex differential of legal power which are still felt today. Leading legal thinkers who helped to masculinise the concept of the person, to the detriment of women, are still revered. Law's continuing male orientation is neither seen nor acknowledged and the legal person is treated (falsely) as if he had always been and remains anyone.
