The Human Story

How Will It End?

THE HUMAN STORY. How will it end? What happens when a civilization decides--quietly, politely, and incrementally--not to have children? The Human Story is not a book about panic. It is a book about choices. Across history, civilizations did not collapse because they lacked intelligence, resources, or warnings. They collapsed because they mistook delay for safety, comfort, or stability, and silence for consent. What really happened was that they forgot to choose family over fleeting ambitions. This book argues that the most decisive reference is no longer geopolitical or economic--but generational. We now know we made mistakes; ZPG (Zero Population Growth) was a huge one, and its legacy of declining birth rates threatens to unravel the very fabric of our future unless we act decisively to reclaim it. If nothing changes, that guaranteed future is now just within the lifespan of today's children. Beyond that point, recovery slips beyond any realistic horizon, and societies cease renewing themselves. They manage their own decline-- efficiently, administratively, and without drama--until extinction becomes a process rather than an event. Drawing on history, demography, culture, and moral philosophy, we ask all people, as in the future, people will ask themselves, "Why, as Americans, would we choose to do everything possible not to have Children. Why do we choose to abort future members of our own families, or to surgically prevent any chance that another family member will EVER be born?" What answer will you give to anyone who asks?
