Can we still talk about Christian ethics? As most data show a great exodus from the Church, and general dissatisfaction with organized Christianity, there exists an urgent question of whether 2,000 years of Christianity have done more harm than good upon the Earth and its people. Christianity has been integral to colonialism, white supremacy, and the Atlantic Slave Trade, and perpetuates racism today. Large segments of Christianity continue to endorse discrimination against women, LGBTQ individuals, and other marginalized groups; underwrite a capitalist system that destroys the planet and renders portions uninhabitable; and manufacture a complex, individualized approach to poverty that promotes charity work but resists structural engagement. Christianity has done much harm in the name of Jesus. In fact, for at least the past thousand years, the mission of Jesus has been captive to a colonial ethic of exploitation and oppression that has contorted and distorted much of Christian theology and practice of ministry. This book issues a call to liberate Jesus from this oppressive, colonial ethic. It enjoins Christians with privilege and power to promote a decolonial, liberative Christian ethic that serves as a corrective to the harms Christianity has manifest and conventional Christian ethics has neglected or even supported. Liberating Jesus is designed for use in seminary or undergraduate classrooms, as well as for broader, public appeal, such as church or denominational study groups. It is not intended to be a comprehensive survey of the field. Rather, particular commitments animate the framework, namely a concern for justice and liberation. The ethical model presented and applied draws upon interwoven threads of liberationist, womanist, Anabaptist, and postliberal theologies, and offers a framework for a communitarian virtue ethic of liberation. It identifies the commonalities between these threads, notably the importance of community, character, and justice-while acknowledging their distinctions-and directs them toward the target audience: Christians who embody and enjoy various levels of social, economic, and political privilege. In doing so, it calls on them to confront the oppressive legacy of Christian ethics and begin to understand ethics as formation into a life of service and advocacy, following the witness of Jesus, for the liberation of the marginalized. By drawing on such an array of theological approaches, the book offers multiple entry points for readers from various perspectives and introduces them to a diverse collection of thinkers and surprising conclusions found at the intersections of these approaches. Liberating Jesus provides Christians with various levels of privilege a way to understand their role and responsibility in participating in movements for justice and liberation. Includes discussion questions and resources for further reading at the end of each chapter.

Tracing the genre through fiction, visual art, film and videogames from the 1980s to the present, this book offers a comprehensive exploration of the intersection between neo-Victorianism, urban spaces and Steampunk. Characterised by its interplay between past and present and its anachronistic retro-speculation, Neo-Victorian-infused Steampunk remixes modern collective memory to produce a re-imagined vision of Victorian London. Investigating how Steampunk's re-calibrated Londons both source from and subvert Victorian discourse about the city, Steampunk London offers a deeper understanding of how a popular cultural memory of the Victorian past is shaped and transmitted in light of present-day identity politics. Covering key themes including retrofuturism, gender and sexuality, colonialism and postcolonialism, it considers such ideas as how early Steampunk synthesizes Victorian urban ethnography; how Victorian urban Gothic shapes shared transmedia memory to challenge reactionary, nostalgic meta-narratives; how Steampunk video games mobilize urban space as an immersive storytelling device with cities open to play; and how Steampunk interprets the modern metropolis as an opportunity for feminist and queer agency. Through examination of Victorian-era writers from Charles Dickens to Arthur Conan Doyle, the book digs into works of fiction and media alike, looking at The Difference Engine, Soulless, and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, From Hell, Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes, cyberpunk classic Blade Runner, and Assassin's Creed: Syndicate and The Order 1886. An important intervention in the study of steampunk, Helena Esser demonstrates how the works explored invite participatory consumption and considers the genre's potential- and failures- to interrogate and challenge our relationship with the Victorian past.

Based on first-hand accounts, original documentation and unpublished images, this is a highly illustrated history of the Flakpanzer in World War II. As the war progressed, Allied and Soviet forces began to deploy ground-attack aircraft armed with cannons, bombs or rockets to halt German armoured columns. Consequently, field commanders began to demand for their units to be issued with effective armoured anti-aircraft weapons. Renowned armour expert Thomas Anderson explains how the weapons were first mounted on light trucks and then, more effectively, on the chassis of light, medium or heavy half-tracks before orders were issued for a dedicated armoured Flakpanzer - the 2cm Flakpanzer 38(t) based on the chassis of a Czech-built PzKpfw 38(t). The effectiveness of this type saw the development of four further vehicles on the PzKpfw IV chassis: FlakPz IV Wirbelwind (whirlwind), the 3.7cm FlaK 43 L/50 Ostwind (east wind), the 3.7cm FlaK 43 L/60 Möbelwagen (furniture van) and the 2cm Vierlingsflak 38 L/55. The final stages of the war also saw German field engineers mounting Flak weapons on all types of heavy truck or half-track chassis available. Drawing on after-action reports, original wartime documents and rare and previously unseen photographs, this is a comprehensive and fully illustrated study of the German development of Flakpanzers throughout World War II.
