In 1960, as the Algerian War for Independence entered its sixth year, 22-year-old Djamila Boupacha was arrested for allegedly planting a bomb in a university cafeteria. While in custody, she was tortured and raped by French soldiers. Her case would have been buried like countless others had it not been for the efforts of her lawyer, Gisèle Halimi, and the philosopher Simone de Beauvoir to transform it into an international cause célèbre. Djamila Boupacha is the culmination of this campaign to expose the systemic violence of colonial rule. "To protest in the name of morality against ‘excesses’ or ‘abuses,’" Beauvoir writes, "is an error which hints at active complicity. There are no ‘abuses’ or ‘excesses’ here, simply an all-pervasive system." More than a historical document, the book is a profound exploration of morality, complicity and resistance. A classic text of anticolonialism, this is a story that demands to be read—and remembered.

Global Governance

Public diplomacy matters to the G20. As the self declared 'premier international forum for economic cooperation', the G20 has global interests and ambitions. The G20 requires the ongoing engagement and support of global public audiences. Simply put, it is a matter of effectiveness, legitimacy and credibility. Yet as an informal, nomadic institution that brings together a diverse array of high profile actors, global, interests and issues, the G20 also presents unique opportunities and challenges to public diplomacy's agenda. The wider narrative of the G20 as an inclusive institution capable of involving publics in the process of global change is underexplored. This book asserts that public diplomacy is the key to the G20's ongoing development, and proposes a fourth phase to John Kirton's (2013), current three phased approach: the mobilization of the many. By examining the many facets of G20 public diplomacy, Byrne contributes to the evolving understanding of the G20 while offering new insights on the evolving practice of public diplomacy beyond the traditional state-centric perspective.

Nestor Machno war zehn Monate alt, als sein Vater starb. Aufgrund der Armut seiner Familie konnte er nur in den Wintermonaten die Schule besuchen, während er in den Sommermonaten bei benachbarten Gutsherren im heute ukrainischen Oblast Saporischschja als Schafhirte arbeitete. Durch die seit der Russischen Revolution von 1905 härter gewordenen Repressionen des Zarenreichs wandte er sich, inspiriert von revolutionären Gruppen, dem Anarchismus und den Ideen Bakunins und Kropotkins zu. 1906, im Alter von achtzehn Jahren, wurde er erstmals verhaftet, 1910 ein weiteres Mal und zum Tode verurteilt, aber dann zu lebenslanger Haft begnadigt. 1917 gelang ihm die Flucht, ein Jahr darauf wurde die Ukraine durch den Frieden von Brest-Litowsk politisch und ökonomisch von Sowjetrussland getrennt. Wassili Golowanow schildert mitreißend vor dem Hintergrund der Wirren der Geschichte die kaum zu fassende Biografie Machnos bis zu seinem Tod im Pariser Exil und erzählt dessen kometenhaften Aufstieg zum Anführer einer kompromisslosen, nach ihm benannten Freiheitsbewegung, die eine anarchistische Ukraine verwirklichen wollte.

Why unfettered free-market capitalism endangers democracy—and what to do about it. In Private Power and Democracy’s Decline, Mordecai Kurz explores the relationship between free-market capitalism and democracy. He shows that technology has made capitalism different from what was envisioned in the Age of Enlightenment. Technology creates centers of market power and monopoly concentration that result in a society in which some people are enriched immensely while many workers’ livelihoods are often destroyed. Contrary to conventional thinking, technological competition does not remove market power, which becomes a permanent fixture of free-market capitalism. Such private power creates political inequality and generates forces that cause democracy’s decline and possible destruction. Applying these ideas to the US, Kurz shows that today’s problems begin in the 1980s with the policy of unregulated free-market capitalism. Coupled with the information technology revolution, this created a techno-winner-takes-all economy—leading to a second Gilded Age of unsustainable inequality and extreme political polarization. In the last 50 years, the economy “boomed” for some while leaving the majority of America’s workers behind. Kurz concludes that only regulated capitalism can support democracy so that the benefits of technology are more equally shared and no person’s livelihood is destroyed to enable others to be enriched. To save democracy, he proposes a “restoration-of-livelihood” policy, offering firms managerial flexibility to maintain rising productivity while ensuring that technology does not destroy the livelihood of others.

This open access book critically analyses a wide range of consumer law issues generated or exacerbated by the Internet of Things. The Internet of Things challenges many of the dichotomies which have shaped current laws: goods-services, hardware-software, tangible-intangible, online-offline. The book focuses on 4 specific challenges: things-as-service, liability, bricking of physical devices through software control, and the potential for enhanced personalisation, especially for digital assistants. The chapters analyse specific applications such as smart homes, connected cars, and consumer wearables with a view to providing innovative solutions to the new challenges posed by the Internet of Things, and to steer the development of the Internet of Things in a fairer direction. As well as offering an important analysis of the potential for smart consumer laws in the Internet of Things, the book also provides important insights into the growing divergence between Germany's and the UK's consumer laws since Brexit.
