The Heart Chambers of Europe: Franco-German Impulses for the EU’s Security Order

China Perspectives

This book systematically examines how the digitalization of global value chains (GVCs) has driven the high-quality development of China's manufacturing industry. It reveals the intrinsic mechanisms and pathways through which digital technologies reshape the international division of labor and promote industrial upgrading.Integrating theory with empirical analysis, the book establishes an innovative measurement framework for GVC digitalization. Using data from China's manufacturing sectors from 2000 to 2020, the book evaluates the quality of industrial development across five dimensions: innovation, coordination, green development, openness, and sharing. The book provides an in-depth analysis of the characteristics, challenges, and multidimensional impacts of Chinese manufacturing's integration into digital GVCs. Using rigorous econometric models, the study demonstrates that digitalization primarily advances high-quality manufacturing development through three channels: reducing transaction costs, fostering technological innovation, and optimizing resource allocation. This open access book critically analyses a wide range of consumer law issues generated or exacerbated by the Internet of Things. The Internet of Things challenges many of the dichotomies which have shaped current laws: goods-services, hardware-software, tangible-intangible, online-offline. The book focuses on 4 specific challenges: things-as-service, liability, bricking of physical devices through software control, and the potential for enhanced personalisation, especially for digital assistants. The chapters analyse specific applications such as smart homes, connected cars, and consumer wearables with a view to providing innovative solutions to the new challenges posed by the Internet of Things, and to steer the development of the Internet of Things in a fairer direction. As well as offering an important analysis of the potential for smart consumer laws in the Internet of Things, the book also provides important insights into the growing divergence between Germany's and the UK's consumer laws since Brexit. Nestor Machno war zehn Monate alt, als sein Vater starb. Aufgrund der Armut seiner Familie konnte er nur in den Wintermonaten die Schule besuchen, während er in den Sommermonaten bei benachbarten Gutsherren im heute ukrainischen Oblast Saporischschja als Schafhirte arbeitete. Durch die seit der Russischen Revolution von 1905 härter gewordenen Repressionen des Zarenreichs wandte er sich, inspiriert von revolutionären Gruppen, dem Anarchismus und den Ideen Bakunins und Kropotkins zu. 1906, im Alter von achtzehn Jahren, wurde er erstmals verhaftet, 1910 ein weiteres Mal und zum Tode verurteilt, aber dann zu lebenslanger Haft begnadigt. 1917 gelang ihm die Flucht, ein Jahr darauf wurde die Ukraine durch den Frieden von Brest-Litowsk politisch und ökonomisch von Sowjetrussland getrennt. Wassili Golowanow schildert mitreißend vor dem Hintergrund der Wirren der Geschichte die kaum zu fassende Biografie Machnos bis zu seinem Tod im Pariser Exil und erzählt dessen kometenhaften Aufstieg zum Anführer einer kompromisslosen, nach ihm benannten Freiheitsbewegung, die eine anarchistische Ukraine verwirklichen wollte.

This book examines how artificial intelligence systems and their applications in security and defence are entangled with governance and policy processes in the EU. Combining concepts and insights from (critical) security studies and science and technology studies, it argues that behind the various AI-related policy initiatives in the EU are particular narratives on security and defence based on European fears of technological innovation and strategic gaps. In this respect, the book casts light on how such beliefs have become increasingly instrumentalized in the European governance dynamics, and subsequently embedded in successive policy initiatives and security and defence research programmes. It challenges conventional understandings of AI technologies as mere security and defence-enabling instruments, by providing a conceptually driven analysis of how certain visions of AI help govern and control one of the most dynamic emergent socio-technical fields.
