O'Callaghan D: The Drum Thing (compact

The Drum Thing (compact edition)

Many people remain unaware of the scale and urgency of Africa’s food crisis, in part because current

policies fail to capture its full complexity. This crisis is shaped by a tangled web of natural and human-

made factors, and without a comprehensive, systems-level approach, meaningful solutions remain out

of reach. Tackling this involves concentrated policies that go beyond technical fixes—it demands

coordinated efforts that bridge sectors, disciplines, and national borders.

Using the metaphor of the Gordian Knot to underscore just how intricate and entrenched the problem

has become, this book examines environmental and climatic challenges. The first section of the book

includes chapters dealing with the natural factors for the crisis, and the second section will encompass

chapters addressing human-made factors, such as political, economic, and social drivers. Each chapter

includes targeted policy recommendations grounded in current research.

Weaving together interdisciplinary research and analysis, the book offers actionable insights and

opportunities to address the manmade and environmental problems, furthering the food crisis in Africa

today.

A 21st Century Gordian Knot

Socioeconomic Effects of the Food Crisis in Africa

This book examines religious organisations and the multifaceted ways in which they engage with morality policymaking in Europe. For centuries, churches held jurisdiction over key moral issues such as marriage, death, and education. Whilst these domains are now controlled by the state and the formal authority of religious communities in the political sphere has diminished, their impact on value systems, individual behaviour and the implementation of policies remains substantial. Examining a diverse array of morality policies – including abortion, euthanasia, same-sex marriage, prostitution and religious education - in six democratic countries, and from the perspective of Catholic, Protestant and Islamic religious groups, the book considers the extent to which religious organisations engage with the policy process, and the different forms of engagement. It argues that religious organisations play an important role in indirectly governing morality policies through their involvement in the implementation of policies. Acting as intermediaries between the state and citizens, they significantly influence how morality policies are implemented. The book will appeal to all those interested in public policy, morality policy, policy implementation, and the politics of religion.Eva-Maria Euchner

Conflicts and Power Relations in Ecuador's Shrimp Sector

Tides of Extraction

A collection of eye-opening natural experiments, showing how economists uncover cause-and-effect relationships and reveal insights about our world. Does having a daughter change how a congressperson votes? How did a nineteenth-century doctor help discover germs? Is it better to go first or second in a penalty shootout? Why don’t diplomats pay their parking tickets? Do leaders really matter? These are all questions economists ask. Some of these questions are serious, others less consequential. But all are interesting—and can be answered by way of the natural experiment. A natural experiment is an event in the real world that neatly divides people into a treatment and control group—and it is one of the greatest tools in the economist’s toolkit. In Daughters, Diplomats, and Death, Patrick Gourley discusses why and how economists have leveraged this powerful method to answer questions that were long thought unanswerable. In the vein of Freakonomics, Nudge, and The Tipping Point, the book takes the reader on a lively and engaging tour of some of the most fascinating natural experiments, explaining how they work, how they help social scientists answer questions, and what conclusions they reached. The experiments illuminate a wide range of timely issues in health, education, reproductive issues, and the environment, lending rich and much-needed nuance to the complex debates that shape today’s headlines.

Palgrave Insights into Apocalypse Economics

This book reassesses classic Marxist theories of finance capital and uneven development in the context of the present intensified process of financialization and the accentuation of combined and accelerating uneven development. In particular, the work of Hilferding and Luxemburg is discussed and re-framed in light of both the contributions of Marx and more recent engagements by David Harvey and Neil Smith. The book explores the case of South Africa in particular in light of the combination of a rapidly financializing yet crisis-ridden South African political economy on the one hand and intensifying social inequality and political conflict on the other. It explores a series of strategies and possibilities that might open up trajectories for change and transformation with particular attention paid to the promises and constraints of the de-growth movement and intersectional class struggle, which will appeal to political economists, researchers, and students alongside those studying South Africa specifically.

Star Wars

Street art has undoubtedly established itself as an art form in its own right. This is demonstrated not only by the numerous exhibitions in museums and galleries, but also by the substantial prices achieved at art auctions, particularly for works by the British artist Banksy. As a result, the focus today has increasingly shifted away from the removal of works installed without the consent by the owners of the affected sites, and towards their commercial exploitation. However, it is precisely this commercialisation that conflicts with the very self-understanding of street art. Due to their illegal creation and their installation in public spaces, street art works are particularly vulnerable to interference and exploitation by third parties. Against this background, this thesis examines the extent to which street art artists can rely on copyright law to protect their artworks against unauthorised interference and commercial exploitation.

Politik für Dummies

In striking black-and-white portraits, dozens of survivors of Michigan's cruel sentencing of children to life without parole-now free adults-are portrayed with irrepressible dignity

The United States is the only country in the world that sentences children to serve time in adult prisons without the possibility of parole. The portrayal of children in conflict with the law, particularly children of color, as inherently threatening, dangerous, and adult-like has been key to denying these youth a second chance and foundational in justifying their cruel and excessive punishment in the criminal legal system..

In Morning from Now On, LaBelle, himself a survivor of childhood incarceration, cocreates astute and nuanced portraits with more than fifty of the hundreds of people in Michigan incarcerated as children. Accompanying essays provide critical context on the history of and impact on a society that locks away our children.

In witnessing these survivors' yearning for freedom, the obstacles they face upon reentry, as well as the wonder and joy of being reunited with their families and communities, this collection reminds us of their unfathomable losses and calls on us to cherish all our children.

Portraits of Life after Juvenile Incarceration

Morning from Now On
