Why most Americans' finances improved during the worst economic contraction since the Great Depression-and the policy choices that made this possible In March 2020, economic and social life across the United States came to an abrupt halt as the country tried to slow the spread of COVID-19. In the worst economic contraction since the Great Depression, twenty-two million people lost their jobs between mid-March and mid-April of 2020. And yet somehow the finances of most Americans improved during the pandemic-savings went up, debts went down, and fewer people had trouble paying their bills. In The Pandemic Paradox, economist Scott Fulford explains this seeming contradiction, describing how the pandemic reshaped the American economy. As Americans grappled with remote work, "essential" work, and closed schools, three massive pandemic relief bills, starting with the CARES Act on March 27, 2020, managed to protect many of America's most vulnerable. Fulford draws from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's "Making Ends Meet" surveys-which he helped design-to interweave macroeconomic trends in spending, saving, and debt with stories of individual Americans' economic lives during the pandemic. We meet Winona, who quit her job to take care of her children; Marvin, who retired early and worried that his savings wouldn't last; Lisa, whose expenses went up after her grown kids (and their dog) moved back home; and many others. What the statistics and the stories show, Fulford argues, is that a better, fairer, more productive economy is still possible. The success of pandemic relief policy proves that Americans' economic fragility is not an unsolvable problem. But we have to choose to solve it.

Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2011 im Fachbereich BWL - Investition und Finanzierung, Note: 1,3, Universität Siegen, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Die Finanzkrise, die 2007 auf dem US-amerikanischen Hypothekenmarkt begann, führte weltweit zu enormen Turbulenzen und Unsicherheiten im internationalen Finanzsystem.1 Auslöser war die steigende Nachfrage nach Immobilien, die aus dem seit 2001 sehr niedrigem Zinsniveau für Hypothekenkredite in den USA resultierte. Diese wiederum führte zu einem starken Preisanstieg der Immobilien und machte sie zu einem attraktiven Investitionsobjekt. Bei einem großen Anteil der Eigentumserwerber handelte es sich jedoch um sog. „Subprime-Kreditnehmer“, zweitklassige Kreditnehmer mit hohem Risiko aufgrund geringer oder schlechter Bonität. Zur Auslagerung der damit verbundenen Ausfallrisiken, bündelten und verbrieften die Banken die Hypothekarkredite und verkauften sie an den Kapital-markt.2 Diese Geschäftspolitik wird auch als „Originate-to-Distribute-Model“ (OTD-Model) verstanden. Das Konzept war solange erfolgreich, bis 2006 die Zinsen wieder anstiegen. Daraufhin waren viele finanziell anfällige Kreditnehmer, insbesondere die zweitklassiger Kredite, mit hohen Zahlungsbelastungen konfrontiert, denen sie nicht mehr nachkommen konnten. Als sich mit der Zeit die Zins-ausfälle zu häufen begannen und daraufhin erste Zwangsversteigerungen folgten, nahm die Krise ihren sichtbaren Lauf und entwickelte sich durch die Verbriefung der Hypothekarkreditrisiken zur internationalen Liquiditätskrise.3Im Fokus dieser Arbeit steht die Auseinandersetzung mit zwei empirischen Untersuchungen. Die Autoren beschäftigen sich dabei mit der Analyse relevanter Faktoren und versuchen auf Basis unterschiedlicher mathematischer Ansätze deren Signifikanz für den Ausbruch der Hypothekenkrise zu belegen. Das Ziel der vor-liegenden Arbeit besteht darin, das Verhalten der Broker und das OTD-Modell als elementare Einflussfaktoren der Subprime-Krise zu identifizieren. Dazu wird zu Beginn von Kapitel 2 zunächst detailliert auf die Beziehung zwischen Kreditnehmer und Broker eingegangen, um das Handeln und das Verhalten der beteiligtenParteien nachvollziehen zu können. Nächster Schritt bildet die Erläuterung des zugrunde gelegten Datenmaterials, das zur Durchführung der Analyse verwendet wurde. Anschließend wird in Kapitel 2.3 kurz auf die methodische Vorgehensweise eingegangen, um im Anschluss die zentralen Forschungsergebnisse zu präsentieren. The families of the veterans were able to get houses of their dreams at a tender age without any down payment. This is the law that opened many other doors of loans for the veterans. The VA loan is to be granted to any of the Veterans who have served for a period of less than two years since September 7 1980 and for officers who served from October 16 1981. For the other veterans, they should have served at least 90 days during war time or 181 continuous days during a peaceful period in order to qualify for the VA home loan. Without any of the aforementioned qualifications no VA can be afforded to any of them. It is quite different for reservists or the National guards. For any of them to qualify for the loan they have to ensure that they have served for a period of not less than 6 years. As earlier on elaborated, it is impossible for the children of a deceased veteran tot enjoy any of the benefits that they were entitled to. That is not the same case for the spouses. There are guidelines which dictate the qualifications of a spouse of a veteran. They can only enjoy 25% benefit of the total benefits that were to be enjoyed by the veteran. But, this is only applicable if the spouse veteran died or went missing for 90 days in service, duty or service related issues. The veterans are usually entitled for a lump sum VA home loan of $417,000 but the spouse can only get $104,250.
