The Artful Aussie Tax Dodger

100 Years of Tax Reform in Australia

From ancient sea voyages to modern-day explorations of deep space, discover the expeditions that have shaped our world and the daring individuals who undertook them. Extraordinary Expeditions highlights more than 30 of the most influential expeditions in history. While some will likely be familiar to readers, such as Christopher Columbus's journey to the New World or Charles Darwin's travels in the Galapagos Islands that inspired his theory of natural selection, others are less well-known but no less important. The book examines a diverse array of expeditions, spanning almost 2,000 years and including all seven continents and beyond. Care has been taken to include journeys conducted by women, people of color, and non-Westerners in order to provide a more comprehensive and inclusive volume. The profiled expeditions are organized chronologically, although a geographical entry list ensures readers interested in a specific region can quickly find relevant material. Each entry includes a description of the expedition, as well as an analysis of its historical context and lasting impact. Maps allow readers to trace the paths of these expeditions, while a collection of primary documents offers valuable insights from those embarking on these journeys. History's greatest expeditions have been prompted by many motivations, from a love of adventure to a desire for fame, from the promise of economic prosperity to a thirst for scientific knowledge. Regardless of why it was undertaken, each of these expeditions had significant impact that endured long after the adventure was over.

Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is a conservation approach designed to ensure that any development or land-use change results in a measurable increase in biodiversity compared to the baseline conditions prior to the project. This concept transcends the traditional mitigation of environmental impacts, emphasising the enhancement and restoration of ecosystems and biodiversity. Biodiversity Net Gain Law and Practice provides a comprehensive understanding of the legal frameworks and policies that govern the protection and enhancement of biodiversity. This book explores the intersection of environmental, planning, and development laws and highlight how these regulations work together to ensure sustainable development and conservation efforts. It looks at key legislation such as the Planning Act 2008, the Town and Country Planning Act 1990, and the National Planning Policy Framework. Through case studies, legal analysis, and policy discussions, this book illustrates the practical applications and challenges of implementing biodiversity laws, and compares their success in the UK, Europe, India, Australia, Japan and South Africa. This title is included in Bloomsbury Professional's Environmental Law online service.

Biodiversity Net Gain Law and Practice

The first comprehensive history of mothers and mothering from antiquity to today, by the acclaimed author of UNWELL WOMEN 'Cleghorn's aim is to reclaim mothering as a radical, intentional act - not purely a biological function, devoid of thought, creativity, or labour . . . Engrossing' OBSERVER 'An essential history' LEAH HAZARD 'This is the book we need right now . . . powerful and astonishing' MARIANNE LEVY 'Thoughtful, smart, and, sadly, really bloody urgent' CLAIRE LYNCH Mothers make history. For centuries, motherhood has sparked social and political change. Yet the acts of growing, birthing and nurturing children - and the power they hold - have been pushed to the margins, overlooked in our narratives of the past. In A Woman's Work, Elinor Cleghorn reveals the mothers, othermothers, midwives, activists, and community leaders who have shaped this extraordinary history. They include Hildegard of Bingen, the medieval nun and mystic with pioneering views about the maternal body; Mary Wollstonecraft, who laid the intellectual groundwork to release motherhood from male control; and Sojourner Truth, who drew attention to the abhorrent treatment of mothers under chattel slavery. Beginning in the ancient world, we learn how in each era, the patriarchy constructed its own idealised notion of motherhood - from the misogynistic dogma of the early church and the stigmatisation of single mothers in 17th century England all the way through to the post-war myth of the perfectly contented housewife. But we also learn how mothers of all classes and circumstances fought back, and lobbied to be valued, respected and supported - not as reproductive vessels, but as people. A Woman's Work is a radical and inspiring new history of mothering, and a timely reminder that the fight for reproductive freedom is far from over.

To paraphrase Sir Winston Churchill, never has so much pornography been available to so many people for so little. This is the story of how the online adult industry has plummeted from its lofty heights of the late 1990s, when a savvy Web entrepreneur could charge premium prices to thousands of eager subscribers. It is also the story of how the law has completely failed to keep pace with the technological innovations that boosted and then savaged the online adult industry. It concludes by analysing the social impact of virtually unlimited pornography of every description, available to all ages at the click of a button. Useful reading for the general reader and for students and researchers involved with business strategy, the history of technology, cultural studies, sexuality, media studies and technology more generally.

Advances in Japanese Business and Economics

This book is the first comprehensive account of the rules and practices─the microstructure─of the Dojima Security Exchange (DSE), the world’s first futures market. Despite worldwide interest in the DSE and its relevance to modern financial markets, it is only briefly touched upon as the earliest example of a futures market in most of the existing literature in English. Until the publication of this book, there has been no comprehensive account in English of the rules and practices of the DSE.The DSE emerged in Osaka, Japan, around the turn of the eighteenth century. In Tokugawa Japan (1603–1867), the shogunate and local lords levied taxes in rice and exchanged rice for currency in rice markets to finance their expenditures. Osaka had the biggest rice market in Japan throughout the Tokugawa period, and most local lords stored rice in their own warehouses in Osaka, selling rice at auctions. Successful bidders received “rice certificates” instead of rice itself, and each rice certificate could be exchanged for a pre-specified quantity of rice any time before its expiration at the issuer’s warehouse. These certificates were actively traded in the DSE.The spot market in the DSE was the market for exchanging rice certificates. In turn, the futures market was the market for the trading of nominal rice derived from one of the representative rice certificates among about 30 brands. There is no physical delivery of rice in the spot market and there is no physical delivery of rice or rice certificate in the futures market—even on the maturity date. All the futures trades at the DSE should be settled by simply paying or receiving the payoff defined as the difference in price between the time of selling (buying) and buying back (selling back). The futures trade was called ‘Cho-Ai-Mai’, which literally means ‘the rice trades on the book’, and implies that there is no physical delivery of rice or rice certificate.

Microstructure of the First Organized Futures Market

For American workers, the social contract is broken. This book gives a firsthand view of where the breaks occurred, and a prescription for rebuilding it to give workers their due. With AI making the decisions and CEOs and moguls making the money, sometimes it seems that most workers today might as well be drones. If not for a long string of missed opportunities over the last 50 years, it might have been different. In Roads Not Taken, Thomas Kochan reviews the turning points where the social contract fractured and broke, reducing workers’ voices as well as their compensation, benefits, and status. And in the lessons learned from these historical examples, he identifies the foundation for building a new labor relations system that ensures workers will share in the benefits from AI and puts America on course for an innovative and durable social contract at work. As a longtime advisor to government, labor, and management leaders, Kochan offers an eyewitness perspective on the mounting mistakes made in America’s labor relations system beginning, roughly, with Ronald Reagan’s firing of striking air traffic controllers in 1981. His book makes a strong case for new strategies on the part of labor unions and other worker advocacy groups, business, and government—strategies not wedded to the legacy labor law and practice that have failed American workers for so long. Recasting the social contract on this basis, Kochan insists, is key to rebuilding our democracy and its institutions after the damage wrought in recent years.

This book applies the approach and methodology of 'Resilient Property Theory' (RPT), bringing together leading scholars to develop and test new approaches to housing and its relationships to private property and environmental sustainability. RPT analyses problems through multiple lenses, paying attention to the web of intersecting issues and stakeholders involved in contemporary housing studies: individuals (owners, tenants, precariously housed, homeless), aggregated interests (neighborhoods, communities, markets, social movements), and the state itself across its multi-layered actors, agencies and institutions (local/city; regional; national; transnational). It focuses on seeking out solutions that enable the production of resilience for different stakeholders and promote resilience within housing systems. This book focuses on providing greater synergy amongst a diverse range of perspectives, across disciplines (law, economics, history, political science) across a range of jurisdictions (US and Canada, England and Wales, Scotland, Europe, Australia and South Africa) and sets out to find sustainable solutions.

Resilient Property Theory and Sustainable Solutions

The Future of Housing

A revelatory and unexpected examination of the political economy of the past century—and an argument that policymakers in government, not the mythical “free market,” created the most dynamic economy the world has ever known. For many decades, a sacred myth has ruled the minds of policymakers and business leaders: free markets, untouched by the soiled hands of government, bring us prosperity and stability. Economist and writer Chris Hughes demolishes this fantasy by chronicling the hidden history of American capitalism: a centuries-long tradition of industrial policy where the state’s guiding hand has been essential to prosperity. Markets do not exist in a vacuum but are the product of a deliberate political order, a practice he calls “marketcraft.” This groundbreaking book takes readers through the high-stakes evolution of our most critical industries, from the state-led management of our banking and financial systems to the intentional development of energy, aviation, healthcare, and semiconductor markets. American government has always done far more than just react to “market failures.” Tracing a lineage from Alexander Hamilton to the architects of Trump and Biden industrial policies, Hughes introduces the “marketcrafters”—the technicians and organizers who combined expertise with judgment to cultivate the economy like a garden. By studying their triumphs and failures, we can pursue a smarter industrial policy for the future. As we navigate the transformative potential of artificial intelligence and the urgent demands of the climate crisis, this book serves as an essential road map for harnessing the power of markets to build a stable, inclusive, and abundant future for all Americans.

New Approaches to Byzantine History and Culture

This book examines the relationship between the emergence of Byzantine archaeology and British colonialism during the period of the British Mandate in Palestine. Taking a single case study, the Negev Desert (now in southern Israel), this study explores how the development of Byzantine archaeology and historical enquiry in the region after 1800 provided the British government with a political and economic blueprint to secure its strategic interests over the Suez Canal. Several excavations of Byzantine sites during the British Mandate were utilised as an historic proof of concept for scientific programmes of ‘desert greening’, and to advocate for the displacement of Arab populations in favour of British economic development and town planning. Invariably, such contemporary concerns to secure British access to the Suez after 1869 shaped the interpretation of Byzantine history. Ideas of the Negev as a timeless ‘frontier zone’, which benefitted from the imposition of a central imperial government and increased economic immigration from a ‘Hellenised’ western Europe, gained a historical precedent in an imagined Byzantine past.
