Die Public Health Humanities verstehen Gesundheit und Krankheit als kulturell und sozial geprägte Phänomene. Sie ergänzen die empirisch orientierte Multidisziplin Public Health um geisteswissenschaftliche und künstlerische Perspektiven. Dabei fragen sie nach der Bedeutung des Künstlerischen für die Gesundheit, interessieren sich für moralische, soziale und kulturelle Dimensionen von Gesundheit und Krankheit in Kunst bzw. Medien und bieten theoretische Zugänge für gesundheitliche Analysen an. Bezugsdisziplinen sind u.a. Kunst-, Kultur- und Medienwissenschaften, Philosophie und Geschichte. Die Beiträger*innen leuchten das Spektrum unterschiedlicher Perspektiven und Zugänge der Public Health Humanities erstmals auf Deutsch aus.

This book examines the development and fundamental nature of legal pluralism. Legal pluralism evokes two distinctions: 'state' vs 'non-state' law; and 'law' vs 'non-law'. As such, although this book focuses upon circumstances in which two or more legal orders compete to govern the same social space, it also addresses the nature of law in general. Drawing on material conflicts arising within jurisdictions such as Australia, Burundi, Cameroon, Gambia, the United States, and Zambia, this book explores the conceptual, moral, and political challenges that legal pluralism creates. Emphasising that non-state law carries no less dignity than that often ascribed to the legal orders of contemporary states, it advances a theoretically sophisticated argument in favour of recognising and respecting genuine cases of legal pluralism, wherever they arise. Accessible and thought provoking, this book will appeal to legal scholars, anthropologists, sociologists, and political and social philosophers as well as practising lawyers, judges, and policymakers who deal with issues of legal pluralism.

This book addresses the various challenges that arose during the two periods of Indonesian President Jokowi's administration. These included the global economic crisis, increasingly complex geopolitical dynamics, such as competition between major powers, the Covid-19 pandemic and its ramifications for Indonesia, as well as issues of border disputes, human trafficking, and the situation in Palestine. Addressing these challenges necessitates a forward-thinking Indonesian foreign policy strategy. As the 2024 General Election has taken place and President Jokowi's term came to an end, this book presents a timely and comprehensive discussion on Indonesian foreign policy and diplomacy and its associated challenges—those of the past, and those now facing the current administration. Relevant to Indonesian and international political scientists and social scientists, this interdisciplinary book—which includes perspectives from both scholars and practitioners—confronts Jokowi's policies relating to the economy, territorial, migration, religion, and all aspects of Indonesian society, in the context of the former government.

This book offers an analysis of how the European Court of Human Rights engages with identity and emotion, revealing both the promise and the limitations of human rights law in addressing the complexities of human experience. The book explores how human rights law, often framed as universal and abstract, responds to deeply personal questions of identity, belonging, and emotional impact. Based on a systematic study of over 3,300 judgments, the book shows how the European Court of Human Rights has increasingly made identity central to its reasoning - particularly in cases involving sexuality, ethnicity, and family life. In these areas, the Court acknowledges how state actions shape emotions such as fear, humiliation, and dignity. Yet, in other domains - migration, religion, professional life - the Court avoids emotional engagement, leading to troubling inconsistencies. The book argues that when emotions are excluded from legal reasoning, individuals are reduced to formal entities, stripped of depth and interiority. Combining doctrinal analysis with insights from social theory and psychology, the book presents a new framework for understanding how emotions and identity interact with law. It traces the evolution of identity references across categories and highlights the Court's uneven treatment of emotional harm. This timely and original contribution speaks to legal scholars, practitioners, and theorists interested in human rights, identity politics, and the emotional dimensions of law. Culinary Man and the Kitchen Brigade offers an exploration of the field of normative subjectivity circulated within western fine dining traditions, presenting a theoretical analysis of the governing relationship between the chef, who embodies the Culinary Man, and the fine dining brigade.The book offers a unique treatment of western haute cuisine's interlocking regime of labor and aesthetics and theorizes the underexplored kitchen brigade as a model of disciplinary formation. It deploys a heterogeneous set of disciplinary discourses and practices which have the effect of consolidating monopolies on epistemic authority and governance. Each position within the brigade's hierarchy is subject to distinct, though related, disciplinary practices. Thus, chapters identify the specific practices pertinent to each brigade subject, while also illuminating how they fit together as a coherent hegemonic project. The application of Wynterian and Foucauldian insight to the fine dining brigade offers a political theory of culinary work which departs from other food studies texts. Notably, this work offers an in-depth treatment of the brigade's colonial dimensions which resonate with emerging critiques, scholarly and general, of the race and gender politics of restaurant labor. The concluding chapters seek to identify where extant modes of resistance or alternative forms of culinary organization may hold the potential to move beyond the hegemonic overrepresentation of Culinary Man.This book will be of great interest to students and scholars from across the social sciences and humanities interested in critical food studies, political and cultural theory, and popular culinary culture.
