Conservators as first responders in a world where our cultural heritage is increasingly at risk Conservation can be understood as a form of knowing; conservators extract meaning about the past from what remains, while noting what is missing and sometimes repairing it. In this erudite and virtuosic book, the historian Peter N. Miller imagines the outlines of a new, expansive notion of conservation that links the world around us—natural and man-made—to the world inside us—our genome, our memories. Putting the work of conservation into conversation with history, philosophy, and literature yields a shift in perspective. It raises questions central to the work of the humanities: What does time mean? How do we write about knowledge? How does care connect humans not just with the world but also with each other? And where does freedom exist in a world of things? Miller casts conservators as first responders in a world as fragile as the things they work on. He argues that a broader conception of conservation can provide the necessary intellectual resources for grappling with the scale of the enormous challenges ahead. Offering a kind of sketch of a curriculum for that future, Miller suggests that shaping the person of the conservator is as important as shaping the field. For only those trained to think about change through the painstaking labor of preserving and restoring will be able to do the work of policy and advocacy required by our uncertain future.

In this revised and updated translation of Das Radikaldemokratische Museum, Sternfeld offers a timely critique of museums as they exist today and instead calls for museums to be reconceptualised as contested spaces for debate and new forms of political activism.Drawing upon approaches from museum studies, education and critical theory, this volume challenges past and present exhibitions and reconsiders how museum spaces can be re¿appropriated in order to produce critical knowledge, rethink education and challenge collections. In doing so, Sternfeld envisages the radical democratic museum as a space that allows us to grapple with the past, negotiate what this means for the present and imagine a future that is more than simply an extension of the present.This provocative and timely book will be relevant to scholars, students and practitioners with interests in museums, critical heritage studies, social justice and political movements.

Tourism is increasingly tied to broader urban, regional, and rural change, as destinations seek to renew place image, diversify economies, and meet evolving visitor demand. In this process, cultural heritage becomes an active resource rather than a passive asset. Heritage-based tourism can enhance competitiveness, strengthen local narratives, and foster community pride and cohesion. However, tourism-led regeneration may also create tensions when upgrades or visitor priorities overshadow resident needs. Whether outcomes such as resilience, renewal, and improved quality of life are achieved depends largely on governance and whose interests guide development. Sustainable development must therefore include cultural sustainability, not only economic performance. A holistic approach requires attention to how heritage is preserved, interpreted, and adapted across scales. When managed inclusively, tourism can reinforce identity, community empowerment, and well-being while keeping heritage relevant. Overall, tourism, cultural heritage, and sustainable development are closely interconnected. Sustainable tourism depends not just on attracting visitors, but on how places interpret heritage, engage communities, and balance continuity with change to support resilient and meaningful place development.

Smart as a City provides a rich ethnographic investigation into how smartness is received and negotiated in a midsize US city. Burcu Baykurt follows the work of civic entrepreneurs, local residents, and city officials in Kansas City, Missouri, where Google tested a citywide gigabit service and the local government launched a series of smart city pilot projects in transportation, public housing, and municipal services. Baykurt redefines smartness as a collective effort to spotlight a city's enduring local problems and align solutions with the often buggy, partially developed systems offered by tech companies. She shows that success in matching civic concerns with flawed tech systems is hard-won and ambiguous, and that the techniques of data capitalism extract value from urban inequalities rather than solve them.

Since the 2003 UNESCO Convention, cultural heritage policies have promoted diversity and grassroots participation. Deborah Sielert explores how these global discourses do and do not unfold in three small towns in northern Germany, where Portuguese, Dutch, and East Frisian minorities have shaped the cultural sphere since the 1990s - despite the absence of official heritage frameworks. Through a comparative multi-sited study, the research traces how local actors engage with symbolic boundary-making in ethnicised festivals and associations, and how global heritage regimes inform these endeavours. This study offers a fresh sociological lens on the interplay between local sensemaking and the worldmaking power of heritage discourse.

This volume offers a comprehensive, interdisciplinary analysis of the evolving frameworks for protecting cultural property, with a particular focus on the development of dispute resolution mechanisms at both national and international levels. Despite longstanding legal and institutional safeguards, cultural property continues to face serious threats from both persistent and emerging challenges, including illicit trafficking, looting, unauthorized excavations, cultural cleansing, and destruction caused by international and non-international armed conflicts. The growing influence of non-state armed groups and terrorist organizations further exacerbates these risks. In addition, the volume addresses new and compounding threats such as climate change, natural disasters, and the use of advanced technologies to produce counterfeit artefacts highlighting the urgent need for more effective, integrated protection strategies.
Contributions from experts in law, archaeology, history, and conservation science provide a multidimensional perspective on cultural property protection. Special attention is also given to the work of commissions and restitution bodies established to address the recovery of art looted during the Second World War. The roles of administrative bodies, museums, galleries, international organizations, and both governmental and non-governmental actors are critically examined within the broader context of cultural governance. Particular attention is given to judicial and non-judicial dispute resolution mechanisms, as well as the involvement of national and international law enforcement agencies. Case studies from conflict-affected regions including Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, and Ukraine offer insights into the practical implementation of protective measures under conditions of extreme risk. The volume also explores the application of scientific methods in detecting forged artefacts and their evidentiary value in legal proceedings. It further explores how analytical techniques applied in the study of historical materials support the restoration and conservation of cultural property, including the identification of appropriate soils, fabrics, and other materials necessary for accurate reconstruction.

A striking collection of 90 photographs depicting the rugged grandeur of the Northwest Coast’s Great Bear Rainforest. Spirit of the Great Bear&nbsp;is an immersive journey through the vast wilderness habitat of the spirit bear, the rare white-furred variant of Kermode bears that has long featured in First Nations oral traditions. While much of Great Bear Rainforest is protected—it is the largest intact coastal temperate rainforest on Earth—today there are as few as 100 of the bears remaining, making it one of the world's rarest animals. Wildlife photographer and conservationist Jack Plant has spent the last decade exploring the rainforest in search of spirit bears and documenting the natural beauty of this coastal habitat, relying heavily on the guidance and traditional knowledge generously shared by the First Nations communities who have protected the region for thousands of years. Plant was adopted by Hereditary Chief Charlie Mason of Kitasoo/Xai’xais First Nation in the community of Klemtu. Spirit of the Great Bear&nbsp;features photographic accounts of Plant’s wild and memorable encounters with the white bears, as well as with other extraordinary species found in the Great Bear Rainforest, including grizzly bears, black bears, wolves, orcas, and humpback whales. The book examines the natural and human-caused threats to the rich biodiversity of the Rainforest while highlighting the substantial progress Indigenous leaders and conservationists have made to protect one of the most biodiverse landscapes in the world. It’s both a celebration of the spirit bear’s resilience and its wilderness home, and an urgent reminder of the need to protect this special and vulnerable ecosystem.
