Entlang der Stationen des Kulturkontakts wird in dieser Studie der Prozess der Transkulturation bei deutschen Eingewanderten in Chile verfolgt - vom Auswanderungsentschluss bis zu Reisen in die alte Heimat oder gar zur möglichen Rückwanderung. Aus der Perspektive der Akteurinnen und Akteure werden dazu die Städte Valparaíso und Valdivia von der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts bis zum Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts vergleichend gegenübergestellt. Astrid Frevert zeigt, dass sich der Unterschied zwischen Deutschstämmigen in beiden Städten dabei als nicht so groß darstellt, wie es bislang angenommen wurde. Verbindungen zwischen beiden Orten trugen dazu bei, dass die Entwicklung einer deutsch-chilenischen Gruppenidentität trotz aller Unterschiede ähnlich verlief. Gemeint war mit Deutschtum sowohl in Valparaíso als auch in Valdivia in der Regel explizit eine deutsch-chilenische Identität. Das Bewusstsein, Teil des neuen chilenischen Heimatlandes zu sein, war in Valdivia allerdings ausgeprägter als in Valparaíso.
