This book is a blueprint for artists looking to engage with activist movements with a persistent longevity and a reminder that art has the power to be more dangerous than words.
Front Lines: A Lifetime of Drawing Resistance is Susan Simensky Bietila's story of her six decades as a movement artist and activist and a lifetime of artistic collaborations rooted in her activist experience. Growing up during McCarthyism, she rejected the nationalist masculinity of elite art and conformist culture and found feminism and collectivism as new forms of resistance. She became an artist in the New Left, creating illustrations for radical underground publications including RAT, Subterranean News, and comics for the anarchic World War 3 Illustrated.
With more than one hundred images, Front Lines documents her art on the page and in action featuring protest banners and giant puppets of birds and fish carried in the streets, masks of notorious dictators for street theater, posters pasted on walls and hung in radical spaces, community art builds, and more. Visual storytelling and detailed captions contextualize and bring to life her work with movements including antiwar protests during the Viet Nam era, Indigenous led antimine and antipipeline struggles, water protection, immigrant rights, anticorporate globalization convening, protests against the state and capital, Palestinian liberation actions, and collaborations with groups throughout the Great Lakes region and beyond. She agitates from the roots and the front lines to this day.

Whitney Biennial 2026

In collaboration with the estate of Bill Traylor, this publication offers a comprehensive look at the self-taught artist’s distinctive imagery, which mixes subjects and iconography from the American South with a strong formalistic treatment of color, shape, and surface.Born into slavery, Traylor spent much of his life after the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation working as a farm laborer in rural Alabama and, later, as a shoemaker and factory worker in Montgomery. In 1939, at approximately the age of 85, having never previously trained or studied art in any formal way, Traylor began making drawings and works on paper using gouache and other media. Though he continued to make art for the remainder of his life, Traylor was most prolific between 1939 and 1942, creating a body of work that offers a unique and rich registry of his life, experience, and insights.This monograph weaves beautiful reproductions of Traylor’s works with essays by and conversations with his descendants, offering a unique and deeply personal look at this artist whose work exists in the collections of many notable institutions in the United States but whose story has never been fully told.

Bill Traylor

Gladys Hynes (1888–1958) was a pioneering figure whose life and work embody the complex currents of the first half of the 20th century Born in India of Anglo-Irish descent, Hynes was not only a gifted painter, sculptor, illustrator and designer but also a radical—pacifist, feminist, suffragist and Irish Republican. Over five decades, she produced an exceptional body of work that engaged with the key movements of her time, ranging from the Newlyn School and Omega Workshops to Vorticism and Surrealism. Hynes moved in an extraordinary circle of creative, intellectual and political figures. Among her closest friends were fellow artists Nina Hammett, Laura Knight and Gluck. As well as Irish political activists Mabel and Desmond FitzGerald and Jack White. Her greatest and most influential friendship was with the controversial and avant-garde poet Ezra Pound, whose&nbsp;Cantos&nbsp;she illustrated. These intellectual and artistic exchanges significantly shaped Hynes’s life and development as an artist. Gladys Hynes’ legacy has been almost entirely overlooked. By shedding light on her artistic achievements, activism and feminist vision, this biography seeks to restore Hynes to her rightful place within the modernist canon as a remarkable woman whose influence, long neglected, is now ripe for rediscovery. &nbsp; &nbsp;

Radical Lives

Gladys Hynes

Blazing Light&nbsp;is&nbsp;published to coincide with Mimi Plumb’s first solo museum exhibition of the same name (High Museum of Art, Atlanta, Georgia) and brings together three of her major bodies of work—The White Sky, Landfall and The Golden City,&nbsp;and&nbsp;The Reservoir—that collectively contemplate the anxieties of American life in the waning years of the Cold War and its aftermath. In the 1970s, Plumb began photographing as a teenager in the San Francisco suburb of Walnut Creek at a time marked by rapid development of the land coupled with global political and economic instability. Her early artistic life was defined by a burgeoning awareness of global warming, the AIDS epidemic, violent conflict in Latin America and the Middle East, and a looming threat of nuclear war. This atmosphere attuned Plumb to the evidence of such forces in the land, the built environment, and the ways people carry themselves and relate to one another—concerns that continue to abide in her work to this day. Plumb’s photographs foreground the presence of people, lending her images a greater degree of pathos and even notes of humorous absurdity. Though the artist embraces realism, her photographs are more ambient and enigmatic, inviting conjecture rather than providing documentary information. The publication will include texts by Gregory Harris, curator of the exhibition; Karen Irvine, chief curator and deputy director at the Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago, IL; and Lauren Richman, curator of photography at the Norton Museum of Art, West Palm Beach, FL. Plumb's work is held in numerous public collections, including the High Museum of Art (GA), San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (CA), Los Angeles County Museum of Art (CA), Museum of Fine Arts Boston (MA), Yale University Art Gallery (CT), and the Deutsche Börse Collection (Germany). The&nbsp;Mimi Plumb: Blazing Light&nbsp;exhibition will be on view at the High Museum of Art from February 6-May 5, 2026. The exhibition will then travel to the Johnson Museum at Cornell University, NY (summer 2026), the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach, FL (winter 2026/2027), followed by the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago, IL (spring 2027).

Mimi Plumb: Blazing Light

Scholars and contemporary artists reckon with decommissioned monuments, examining fraught narratives of the legacy of the Civil War and slavery as well as national identity in the United StatesThis volume features a selection of decommissioned monuments, many of them Confederate, presented alongside contemporary artworks that address American history and national identity. MONUMENTS, which accompanies the eponymous exhibition, marks the last several years of monument removals as a historic moment and aims to build a better understanding of our shared history and ideals, while holding the monuments accountable to the present. Featuring contributions by the exhibition curators, Bennett Simpson, Hamza Walker and Kara Walker, as well as scholars, poets and artists, the publication attends to the social, political, historical and art historical context of these monuments as well as the legacies of the people and events they commemorate. It includes additional essays by Sven Beckert, Emily Bingham, Thomas J. Brown, Karen Cox, Hilary N. Green, Grace Elizabeth Hale, Michael Lobel, Dani R. Merriman, Charmaine A. Nelson, Michael Ralph, Kirk Savage, Cherise Smith, Tsione Wolde-Michael and Dell Upton, and contributions by Derrick Austin, Mark Thomas Gibson, David Hartt, Ashley M. MONUMENTS

The first English-language volume of Takuma Nakahira's influential writings on photography. Takuma Nakahira was a crucial figure within the history of Japanese photography, best known outside of Japan as a founding member of Provoke, the experimental magazine of photographs, essays, and poetry, first published in Tokyo in 1968. Through Provoke, Nakahira deepened his artistic and personal connection to Daido Moriyama, with whom he developed a signature style of harsh and grainy black-and-white photography. He would eventually break with this style, and over the course of his decades-long career, maintain an experimental approach to photography. And yet, beyond his photographic practice, Nakahira was also a committed critic, writing on a range of topics hardly limited to photography: art, film, journalism, radical politics, television, and jazz. As a whole, the essays offer insight into the evolution of Nakahira's thinking. As the curator Matthew S. Witkovsky notes, "Nakahira's incisive writing cut apart standing views in literature, film, politics, and especially photography, and he published both articles and photographs at a feverish rate."
