How people have reimagined the story of the ten plagues of Egypt, from antiquity to our own era of relentless catastrophe People have been telling and retelling stories about disasters for as long as they have been telling stories. One of the oldest of such stories is the ten plagues in the book of Exodus, the series of disasters that forced the Egyptians to liberate the Israelites. These plagues packed enough catastrophe to fill a series of summer blockbusters—rivers of blood, invasions of frogs and insects, mass disease, fiery hail, smothering darkness, and a midnight massacre of the firstborn. The story of the ten plagues resonates today, as we try to make sense of such calamities of modern life as pandemics, climate change, and war. In Disasters of Biblical Proportions, Steven Weitzman explores how people of later ages—artists, writers, activists, philosophers, believers and unbelievers alike—have reshaped the story of the ten plagues to give expression to their own trauma, outrage, guilt, humor, and hope. Tracing the interpretation and retelling of each plague across time and space, Weitzman uncovers how this ancient tale found new meaning among Jews, Christians, and Muslims and continues to shape how people today understand the present and envision the future. This book fills a critical gap in research on the shipbreaking industry by analyzing the shortcomings of current international and domestic laws. It argues that existing frameworks, such as the Hong Kong Convention and Basel Convention, are insufficient in protecting workers' health and safety, as evidenced by ongoing fatalities and work-related diseases in South Asia's shipbreaking industry.

The book proposes a new framework that goes beyond prevention to include compensation, holding international shipowners accountable for the harm caused to workers. This includes introducing a Shipbreaking Liability Certificate (SLC) and accompanying insurance, ensuring that affected workers or their families receive compensation. Drawing on lessons from other industries with successful regulatory changes, the book suggests that these measures be adopted under a legal framework supported by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

In addition to its practical recommendations, the book contributes a new theoretical approach by applying rectificatory global justice to the issue of shipbreaking, an area largely unexplored in existing literature. The combination of legal analysis and case studies provides a strong foundation for the proposed civil liability framework, offering a comprehensive solution to the challenges faced by the shipbreaking industry. This book is essential reading for anyone involved in the shipbreaking industry, from policymakers and legal experts to shipowners and international organizations.

Zahlreiche Beispiele aus der deutschen Wirtschaft zeigen, dass der Streit um die Verteilung der Macht und Vermögenswerte in der Familiengesellschaft insbesondere im Rahmen eines Generationenwechsels existenzgefährdend werden kann. Den Rationalitätsdefiziten zu begegnen ist für den nachhaltigen Erfolg der Familiengesellschaft damit essenziell. Während einige Familiengesellschafter vorbeugend umfassende Vertragswerke in und um die Gesellschaft errichten, finden sich nach wie vor Familiengesellschaften, die keine besonderen Regelungsmechanismen implementiert haben.Dieser Problematik steht mit der gesellschaftsrechtlichen Treuepflicht ein Instrument gegenüber, welches dem Verpflichteten die Berücksichtigung der Interessen der Gesellschaft und (Mit-)Gesellschafter auferlegt. Rassismuskritische Ansätze wie die Critical Race Theory, Postkolonialismus, Diskurstheorie, Intersektionalität, und weitere beleuchten vielfältige Facetten des Rassismus. Sie zeigen, wie tief er in sozialen Strukturen verankert ist.
Dieser Sammelband greift die Theorieinstrumente Pierre Bourdieus auf, um diese Perspektiven zu erweitern und neue Impulse für die Rassismuskritik zu setzen. Im Zentrum steht der Begriff der "Symbolischen Ordnung", verstanden in Verbindung mit Konzepten wie "Symbolische Gewalt", "Symbolische Herrschaft" und "klassenbasierte soziale Ordnung". Symbolische Ordnung und Rassismuskritik

This book re-examines the origins and development of the laws of war and human rights law and exposes an overlooked provision of the European Convention on Human Rights which permits the use of lethal force where absolutely necessary to quell an insurrection. When civilian casualties occur in internal armed conflicts, questions are asked about how civilians can be better protected against the use of force by armed insurgents and state security forces. The laws of war include protection against the targeting of civilians but permit the use of force based on 'military necessity' and allow 'proportionate' civilian casualties. Where those laws do not apply, the use of force is generally seen as being limited to self-defence. This creates paradigms of armed conflict and law-enforcement with very different rules. The paradigms are then treated by governments and other actors as being separate and divided by a threshold of violence, when, in practice, they overlap, both in the conduct of military operations and, this book argues, as a matter of law. Revisiting the law provides the opportunity to reassess the benefits and risks of the existing paradigms and consider how applying the provision permitting the use of lethal force in quelling an insurrection would affect them. The book concludes that it offers a middle way based on the existing law, but it requires wider recognition and development in order to achieve a more appropriate balance between human rights and collective security.
