The Tale of a Fading Sense

Cinema Cultures in Contact

A free ebook version of this title is available through Luminos, University of California Press's Open Access publishing program. Visit www.luminosoa.org to learn more. This wide-ranging intellectual and media history traces China's emergence as a modern state in which boundaries blur between art and design, education and psychological conditioning. Tracking the parallel development of set design and social engineering from the 1920s to the 1960s, Background Matters examines the concept of huanjing (environment), a neologism introduced at the turn of the twentieth century that evoked heated intellectual debates and inspired frenzied aesthetic experimentation. Weihong Bao shows how efforts to reshape the mind consolidated the idea and art of environment by advancing a new theoretical notion of set design: both as aesthetic organization across film, theater, radio, and television and as social experimentation in worldmaking across geopolitical and transnational contexts. Inventive and breathtaking in scope, this book radically rethinks environment not as an external object but as the nexus of mind, medium, and society.

Set and Design, Mind and Environment

Background Matters: Volume 9

The MIT Press Essential Knowledge series

What lies underneath digital platforms—their invisible architecture and governance that determine everything visible. Every time you unlock your phone, stream a show, or start your car, you’re entering a world shaped by thousands of engineering decisions you’ll never see. Most platform conversations fixate on their visible canopy—business models, user experience, competitive strategy—the “leaves,” in a sense. Platforms by Amrit Tiwana excavates their roots. The book begins with a simple DNA test that separates authentic from faux platforms, then traces the forces turning tractors, pacemakers, and elevators into platforms. Using the platform trinity, the author explores principles behind why platforms behave so differently, why superior technology doesn’t always win, and why—unlike products that reach a final form—platforms never stop evolving. From there the book explains platforms’ two hidden root systems: The first system, architecture, shows how Lego-like “modular” design, frozen interfaces, and prefab building blocks let thousands of outsiders contribute pieces that snap into colossal systems. The second system, governance, describes where architecture confronts human behavior. Elegant architecture flails with poor governance, so both demand discipline.

*A New York Times Notable Book * A Financial Times Best Book of the Year 'A learned, formidable and vivid story... Readers around the world will study and ponder this monumental work of history, agreeing and arguing with it, all the while affirming its generational importance, for decades to come' The New York Times 'Epic... Read this book and you will learn innumerable things you did not previously know culled from places you have never been' Financial Times A brilliant global narrative that unravels the defining story of the past thousand years No other phenomenon has shaped human history as decisively as capitalism. It structures how we live and work, how we think about ourselves and others, how we organise our politics. Sven Beckert situates the story of capitalism within the largest conceivable geographical and historical framework in this fascinating new book.Capitalism, argues Beckert, was born global. Emerging from merchant communities across Asia, Africa and Europe, capitalism's radical recasting of economic life rooted itself only gradually. Then it burst onto the world scene, as European states and merchants built a powerful alliance that would propel them across the oceans. This epic drama corresponded at no point to an idealised dream of free markets. All along, state-backed institutions and imperial expansions shaped its dynamics.Capitalism decentres the European perspective, highlighting agency, resistance, innovation and ruthless coercion around the world through to the present with the rise of Asian economies, particularly China. Sven Beckert doesn't merely add up capitalism's debits and credits in this monumental book, but allows us to think afresh about the past to help us re-imagine the future.

A Global History

Capitalism

The Frankfurt School in New Times

Longstanding debates about neoliberalism in the United States center around whether it has created a culture of entrepreneurial selfhood or a carceral state. Credit, Cops, and Cages presents a novel theory and relevant empirical evidence arguing that capitalist individualism combines both of these tendencies. The book's interdisciplinary authors first derive a critical framework and set of social-psychological hypotheses from the long-neglected criminological writings of the early Frankfurt School. They then test and explore these hypotheses with new data and analyses in a series of chapters that guide the reader down the ladder of capitalist individualism. In the process, the authors synthesize and critically examine scholarship of Constitutional law; big data on indebtedness, segregation, and police militarization; psychological surveys capturing and comparing attitudes and emotions around debt and policing; and the intimate testimony of those who are deeply in debt or are currently incarcerated. Unique in its combination of philosophy and social scientific research, this book restores the relevance of the Frankfurt School's ideas and methods to a comprehensive understanding of contemporary U.S. society.

What does it mean to be governed and what does it mean to resist? Examining how communities form amidst social and political turbulence, this open access book presents four case studies that demonstrate the power of organic social formations over imposed order. Understanding this formation of community in terms of 'ungovernability' and a 'poetics of resistance',Ungovernable Spaces charts a movement from oppression, through transformation, into imagining, and finally emergence. Throughout the book, the authors engage methods of situated practice and related modes of writing and image-making to consider a range of global case studies: the destruction of the Mecca apartment building in Chicago's South Side in 1952, following a decade of resistance from the building's predominantly African American occupants; M.K. Gandhi's practices of social activism including the Salt March protest of 1930, and the daily practice of spinning and intermittent fasts; the Ciudad Abierta (Open City), a radical pedagogical experiment started by a poet and an architect in Valparaíso, Chile in 1970; and, finally, the urban ecologies developing on either side of Belfast's 'peace walls' in the wake of the Troubles and 1998's Good Friday Agreement. Structured via four spatial configurations - the grid, the charkha, the constellation, and the cluster -each case study explores community formation through artistic and aesthetic practices that resist and unsettle forms of hegemonic order. A truly interdisciplinary work at the intersection of poetry, art and spatial practice, Ungovernable Spaces argues for the importance of ethics, aesthetics, imagination and ecology in developing, of necessity, a new poetics of 'us.' A challenge to incentivization as a dominant framework for understanding and governing people From corporate management and consumer behavior to public health and climate policy, incentives are widely treated as a neutral and effective way to shape how people act. In this book, Guus Dix shows that incentives are not simple policy nudges; they lull us into a passive understanding of ourselves as being merely responsive to changes others make to our environment. They foster a politics of incremental tweaks to a socially and ecologically destructive economic system that we are expected to accept without question. Dix argues that it is time to challenge the reign of incentives in contemporary science and public life. Dix traces the evolution of the incentive, from the engineering of performance charts and rewards for factory workers to combating gridlock at Britain’s National Health Service. He describes the function of incentives under socialism, theories of adjustment incentives developed at the Harvard Business School to manage employees, and incentivizing whole economies—both socialist and capitalist. He shows that incentivization is a distinct way of wielding power. Incentives have become part of a quasi-universal governing philosophy that keeps us from addressing such major issues as poverty and the climate crisis. Finally, Dix analyzes the limits of incentivization, arguing that being governed by incentives keeps us from considering government policies that have the potential to bring about meaningful and transformative change.

The Daily Life of Money in History

This edited book addresses the paradox of sustainability amidst the complexities of economics, enterprises, environment, and society. It delves into the economic, social, and environmental dimensions, examining not only the interconnections and alignments, but also the conflicts across various levels of sustainable development. With the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a backdrop, the book addresses the trending topic of sustainability among economists, scholars, practitioners, environmentalists, policymakers, and the general public. Despite the SDGs’ projected realization by the 2090s, significant "why not" challenges remain. Current research, policies, and practices are often fragmented, relying on specialized or professional works. The contents of this book transcend geographical, sectorial, and professional boundaries to examine the intersections and paradoxes among the three dimensions of sustainability, provoking further debates and generating societal impacts. The book is divided into four parts: the first three present original research from various disciplines addressing specific concerns of each sustainability dimension. The fourth part includes perspectives of practitioners such as founders of social enterprises and non-profits, alongside editorial analysis of the complexities and paradoxes of sustainability for theoretical, practical, and policy recommendations.Adopting a holistic approach, this book offers actionable insights and strategies to address sustainability challenges, fostering ecosystem resilience and long-term global development.

Why Big Labor moved to the right— and the fight ahead for the left to win back America’s working class Unions helped construct the American middle class, defeat Jim Crow, and advance progressive rights, but in Trump’s America, the labor movement is changing. In Big Labor's Big Shift, journalist Nathan Bomey explores how Big Labor and the working class are no longer an automatic ally of the American left. Fueled by decades of economic decline, political disillusionment, and cultural disenfranchisement, new politically nebulous and economically populist leaders in the movement are building a powerful new movement based on class warfare that prizes wage and benefit gains over traditional progressive priorities. Through original reporting and first-hand interviews, Bomey traces key events that have led to this political shift. Bomey reveals: -At the Teamsters, president Sean O’Brien is cozying up to Donald Trump and blasting Democrats as tools of big business, even showing up at the Republican National Convention to deliver his message. -At the United Auto Workers, president Shawn Fain is seizing an opportunity to break the free trade consensus in Washington. The devout Christian, who wields religious rhetoric from the stump, is aligning with the Trump White House on tariffs and blasting Democrats for aggressively pursuing electric vehicles to fight climate change. Bomey shows how the two interconnected phenomena represent a massive political realignment—not just along cultural and nationalism lines, but of the working class itself away from its historic roots in the Democratic party. Urgent and compelling, Big Labor's Big Shift encapsulates the fight for the soul of the union movement.

Big Labor's Big Shift

A manifesto in lectures about the material conditions and absurdities of being a writer and adjunct professor under capitalism-by turns funny, angry, despairing, and hopeful-from a writer who "has invented a new form" (Annie Ernaux).

In the spring of 2025, Heroines and Drifts author Kate Zambreno taught a weekly nonfiction "craft" lecture at Columbia University, thinking through the crises of the adjunct loop in the United States and the question of labor and writing in publishing and the university. This project became more absurd, and more urgent, as the Trump administration quickly turned to authoritarianism and the university became complicit with the administration, creating a dystopian and paranoid atmosphere in which students were kidnapped from university housing and student protestors were expelled. How can we study together and create under such conditions?

The resulting essays are funny, angry, often in despair, and somehow also full of optimism as to the future of writing, even amidst the collapse of the institutions meant to support writers and students. Zambreno engages with texts including Sofia Samatar's Opacities, Fred Moten and Stefano Harney's The Undercommons, Noémi Lefebvre's The Poetics of Work, Heike Geissler's Seasonal Associate, and Samuel Delaney's Times Square Red, Times Square Blue.

A craft book against a "craft" divorced from political and material realities, Against Nonfiction is for anyone trying to write and make art in impossible times.
