A Decade of Research Activities at the Department of Industrial Engineering (UniNa-DII)

This open access book presents the steps necessary for the application of rotorcraft flight modelling and simulation and analysis in support of certification for compliance with EASA CS-27 and CS-29, SUBPART B—FLIGHT and other flight-related rules (e.g. CS-27/9, Appendix B, Airworthiness Criteria for Helicopter Instrument Flight). The material is presented in the form of a structured ‘Rotorcraft Certification by Simulation’ process, starting from the relevant paragraphs in the Certification Specifications, through a comprehensive description of the assembly of flight simulation requirements, informed by judgements on Influence, Predictability and Credibility, and on into the detailed building of the three major elements of the process; the Flight Simulation Model, the Flight Simulator, and the associated Flight Test Measurement System. The latter feeds both the flight model and simulator development with real-world test data to support validation and fidelity assessment. The book is intended to provide support to early adopters of simulation and analysis in the certification process, including those who have considerable experience and expertise in the use of Modelling and Simulation in support of design and development. It is acknowledged that there exists much good practice in the rotorcraft industry in this regard. However, what is presented herein is considered a significant step forward in the development of this practice, particularly in terms of the importance of a structured, requirements-based, process using adaptable-fidelity, descriptive and predictive simulation tools, and associated pre-certification flight testing, to reach the goal of a credible flight simulation.&nbsp;

Dynamic Response and Failure of Composite Materials - DRAF 2024

This book examines ascent trajectories of space launch vehicles and re-entry trajectories of space capsules. The decommissioned SCOUT is used as a reference launcher and the reader will be introduced to various and detailed aspects of a launch vehicle that are not generally available in the literature, since this information is limited to internal industry and agency reports. The SCOUT data are used here as a study case and the reader will be able to generate a complete numerical code using the general equations of flight introduced in different reference systems, including the time-dependent parameters representing the launcher and its environment with a high degree of accuracy. The guidance parameters for injection into orbits of different semiaxes, eccentricities and inclinations are determined by guessed values obtained by original analytical formulae. These formulae allow a fast and sufficiently accurate design of the rocket trajectory within the atmosphere; in the exo-atmosphericflight closed form solutions of the optimal problem of injection into orbit are provided.The second part of the book deals with re-entry trajectories. Basic analytical formulae for ballistic reentry are presented to evaluate the reentry trajectory and the capsule design in terms of critical parameters such as temperature and load peak. Entry corridors for ballistic reentry trajectories are then determined for various planets with atmospheres. The effect of lift is analysed to increase the entry corridors and guide the capsule to a target landing point. Autonomous and real-time guidance algorithms are developed for capsule of low aerodynamic efficiency and winged re-entry vehicles.

This book includes a carefully curated selection of contributions that were presented at the 17th International Conference on Space Operations (SpaceOps) held in Dubai, UAE, from March 6th to 10th, 2023. The selection of chapters was based on their relevance to the current space operations community. The contributions represent a cross-section of three main subject areas: Mission Management—management tasks for designing, preparing and operating a particular mission; Spacecraft Operations—preparation and implementation of all activities to operate a space vehicle (crewed and uncrewed) under all conditions; and Ground Operations—preparation, qualification, and operations of a mission dedicated ground segment and infrastructure, including antennas, control centers, and communication means and interfaces. This book describes the basic concepts of spacecraft operations for both manned and unmanned missions. The first part of the book provides a brief overview of the space segment. The next four parts deal with the classic areas of space flight operations: mission operations, communications and infrastructure, the flight dynamics system, and the mission planning system. This is followed by a part describing the operational tasks of the various subsystems of a classical satellite in Earth orbit. These technologies are based on the polarization structure, ultra-broadband and the fluctuation characteristics (slow and fast) of the radiolocation signals. Introduction to the Theory of Radiopolarimetric Navigation Systems

This book introduces a stability and control methodology named&nbsp;AeroMech, capable of sizing the primary control effectors of fixed wing subsonic to hypersonic designs of conventional and unconventional configuration layout. Control power demands are harmonized with static-, dynamic-, and maneuver stability requirements, while taking the six-degree-of-freedom trim state into account. The stability and control analysis solves the static- and dynamic equations of motion combined with non-linear vortex lattice aerodynamics for analysis.&nbsp;The true complexity of addressing subsonic to hypersonic vehicle stability and control during the conceptual design phase is hidden in the objective to develop a generic (vehicle configuration independent) methodology concept. The inclusion of geometrically asymmetric aircraft layouts, in addition to the reasonably well-known symmetric aircraft types, contributes significantly to the overall technical complexity and level of abstraction. Walzer and Justice: Spheres of Justice in the 2020s

Hybrid threats have been defined in various ways by different security actors, with their scope continuously expanding to encompass emerging insecurities within the evolving security environment. As an umbrella term encompassing a wide spectrum of threats with complex and multidimensional features, the notion of hybrid threats remains inherently vague and amorphous. This lack of clarity presents significant challenges for policymakers, who must constantly identify potential dangers, anticipate risks, and formulate effective responses to safeguard their polities and populations. Consequently, a persistent sense of insecurity has become a defining characteristic of the current European security landscape.
This ‘new normal’ of European security is characterised by a series of ‘(un)known unknowns’ that fall under the elusive concept of hybrid threats. However, rather than accepting this evolving security paradigm at face value, this study calls for a critical examination of its underlying assumptions, core concepts, and broader political implications. It argues that the hybrid threat narrative demands a re-evaluation of what security means in contemporary Europe and how it is operationalised.
Moreover, the study underscores the expansive nature of the hybrid threat framework, which has the potential to include virtually any domain – ranging from education and technology to research and public infrastructure – thereby contributing to the securitisation of all aspects of social and political life. This expansive and ambiguous framing raises important questions about the limits of security and allocation of resources, carrying considerable implications for democratic governance in Europe.

The recent entry of private entrepreneurs into the world of space has multiplied the number of services provided by instruments in orbit, resulting into a rapid and tumultuous growth of the space economy. More services translate into more launches bringing into orbit more satellites. As a result, circum-terrestrial orbits are filling up alarmingly, and we are only at the beginning of the proliferation of mega constellations that have sprung up in recent years to provide planet-wide Internet connectivity. There are neither national nor international laws for managing the number of orbiting satellites that are growing at such a dizzying rate that real orbital traffic jams are feared. We need to extend to the space around us, but also to the other bodies in the solar system, the concept of sustainable use so as not to repeat the same mistakes we have made on Earth's surface. Around our planet we need to avoid overcrowding of orbits so as not to endanger our planet's economy, which is heavily dependent on the use of satellites. Looking further afield, to the Moon and Mars, for example, we must balance resource utilization with unnecessary pollution of fragile ecosystems. Human settlements will have to respect the ecosystem of these celestial bodies that do not belong to any state but must be absolutely protected in order to prevent an interplanetary version of the tragedy of the commons, unfortunately so familiar in our planet. Particular attention must be paid to the risks of biological pollution. Explorers (both human and robotic) risk carrying terrestrial material. Similarly, handling extraterrestrial samples requires well-equipped laboratories and continuous surveillance. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

From Earth to Moon and Mars

This reference work&nbsp;gathers all of the latest technologies, information, definitions and explanations of spacecraft life support systems, while providing in-depth coverage of the current knowledge of the business of keeping astronauts alive during their missions. It is intended that this MRW be the go-to reference work not only for aerospace engineers, but also for graduate and undergraduate aerospace engineers and space scientists. The area of spacecraft life support is&nbsp;comprised of&nbsp;dozens of specialties and sub-specialties within the fields of engineering, biophysics, and medicine. As space agencies around the world pursue cutting-edge life support technologies, much more information and data is accumulated.&nbsp;When humans move out into the solar system to stay for long durations, the most immediate challenge will be the provision of reliable and robust life support systems in locations devoid of food, air, and water. These life support systems must provide these commodities in each phase of spaceflight, including intra-vehicular activity (IVA) and extra-vehicular activity (EVA). Systems supporting human life must also fulfill myriad requirements: exceptional reliability in the space environment, allowing maintenance and component replacement in space; reduced resupply mass of consumables and spares; the ability to utilize local planetary&nbsp;resources for self sufficiency; and minimized mass power and volume requirements. &nbsp;These requirements will assume ever greater importance as bolder missions are envisioned and more sophisticated life support systems are required. For example, the next decade could see human missions to Mars and a return to the Moon. In the not-so-distant future, there is the prospect of Mars One and the creation of a permanent extraterrestrial colony. It may appear that a suitable environment can be created simply by reproducing terrestrial environmental conditions within a vehicle. In reality, it is first necessary to define the environmental characteristics humans require and match these requirements with the myriad design constraints. This is no easy task, because implementing these environmental parameters within a spacecraft can be challenging, while balancing the various requirements and constraints can test the abilities of even the most gifted aerospace engineer. Yet it is a crucial field of study and the experts contributing to this volume are on the very front lines.

The importance of suborbital flight regulation, which includes exploring and defining its status in international aerospace law, EU law, and in national legal systems, is supported by the development of projects for the use of suborbital vehicles, the technological significance of suborbital flight for the development of space activities and, consequently, for all future human economic activity.Successful suborbital flights, if they ensure the recovery and reuse of the launch vehicle, support low-cost vehicle development programs. The objective of this textbook is to provide a synopsis of propulsion technologies in the context of spaceship design. The author identified a lack of multidisciplinary textbooks that explain to students both the technology and physics of space propulsion as well as its relationship to other disciplines in the process of spaceship design. To make the subject more tangible, the propulsion demanding context of space exploration was chosen.The book therefore begins with the astronomical context relevant to human exploration of the solar system. This challenging endeavour requires powerful space propulsion systems of various types. Existing and emerging technologies are systematically discussed. Principle similarities and technological analogies between the different types are highlighted. Starting from the physical working principle, the book progressively extends the view to subsystem and system design aspects. This approach recognises that the propulsion subsystem is the most defining architectural element of large spacecraft, i.e. starships. Such a comprehensive presentation of propulsion technology from a system perspective is not yet reflected in the existing literature.In order to apply the fundamental knowledge provided in the first 9 chapters, a mission to the dwarf planet Ceres is presented, where different propulsion technologies have to be combined to achieve the mission objectives. In this way, the reader is introduced to the basics of requirements breakdown, design space analysis and the technical trade-off process, all of which are essential for early mission planning. EU law as such no longer applies in the United Kingdom and British citizens and companies no longer benefit from its advantages. Part of the previous regime has however been maintained (at times with amendments) through the series of treaties negotiated between the UK and the EU in 2019 and 2020, in particular the Trade and Cooperation Agreement of 2020, to which the 2023 Windsor Agreement can be added. The end result is a legal regime which is perhaps even more complex than EU law itself. This book aims to provide the reader with a clarification of this legal regime as well as provide context to it and suggestions to improve it. All key topics are covered, such as citizens of the EU in the UK and British citizens in the EU, trade in goods and in services, criminal justice, public procurement, Northern Ireland, the UK overseas territories, the dispute settlement, security and defence, international trade agreements of the UK post-Brexit, environmental protection, European civil justice, financial services, education and research, and the European offices of the UK local authorities and devolved administrations after Brexit. All the chapters follow, wherever possible, the same triadic structure. The first part looks at the regime prior to Brexit; the second part analyses the current regime; and the third part discusses ongoing and predictable trends. The concluding chapter attempts to identify some themes likely to impact on the forthcoming preparation of the 2026 review.
