Reflexionen über eine Daseinsmetapher

Studies of Organized Crime

This book provides a comprehensive analysis of clan crime and criminal families, with a particular focus on Europe. It examines the phenomenon through anthropological, criminological, and socio-political perspectives, with particular attention to kinship, migration, media framing, gender, intergenerational transmission, and institutional responses. Rather than treating ‘clans’ as fixed or culturally homogeneous entities, it explores the conditions under which kinship-based networks may become involved in criminal activities.
It covers a range of topics, including:

the concepts of families, clans, and tribes;

the emergence of ‘clan crime’ in European media and political discourse;

migration, marginalisation, and criminal opportunities;

kinship, loyalty, secrecy, and conflict regulation in criminal clans;

women’s roles and the intergenerational continuity of crime;

interventions and policies to prevent and tackle serious and organised crime in kinship-based networks across Europe.

Ideal for academics, policymakers, law enforcement professionals, and social services practitioners, this volume provides a nuanced and empirically grounded account of clan- and family-based crime in contemporary Europe.

The Intersection of Crime, Culture and Opportunities

Clan Crime and Criminal Families

Artificial Intelligence Meets Made in Italy: Rethinking Creativity, Industry, and Society

“In
Principles of Imperfect Organized Crime Prevention
, John Braithwaite offers the first global analysis of organized crime and its entanglements with state corruption, war crimes, and corporate crime, drawing on evidence from more than 50 countries. Through a distinctive empirical and normative lens, Braithwaite combines fine-grained analyses and illuminating insights with thought-provoking recommendations grounded in restorative justice, responsive regulation and a theory of assemblages. Essential reading for scholars of organized crime, this book is equally valuable for social scientists, policymakers, and practitioners seeking innovative strategies to loosen organized crime’s grip on societies and mitigate resulting harms.”
–Leticia Paoli
, Professor, Institute of Criminology, KU Leuven, Belgium
This open access book is a novel contribution to criminology, a radical conjuncture in the evolution of restorative justice and responsive regulatory theory.When Brazil’s President Lula returned to power, he backed an assemblage of movements that included environmentalists, Indigenous leaders who were river keepers, forest keepers, and regulators to reduce deforestation of the Amazon at the hands of assemblages of illegal loggers, wildlife smugglers, agro-business, and corrupt officials. This steeply slowed accelerating destruction of the Amazon ecosystem. Simple reforms like resourcing forest fire brigades and environmental crime prosecutors also helped. Braithwaite’s theoretical point is that disassembling harm-producing assemblages, and replacing them with harm-preventing assemblages, helps us see how big changes to the character of organized crime do occur to impact things that matter, like the Amazon.Organized crime does most harm when it criminalizes states or is taken over by presidents of states. Braithwaite diagnoses data from 6000 interviews and documentary sources from over 50 countries to discern the states where this is happening. Which are the societies where the power of organized crime to do this level of harm has been disassembled?John Braithwaite
is Emeritus Professor and Founder of the School of Regulation and Global Governance (RegNet) at the Australian National University.

Nach der Euphorie

Are milk and dairy products still fit for the 21st century? As concerns about animal welfare, climate change and human health reshape our food systems, milk has become one of the most contested staples on our tables. In M*lk, Orla Shortall investigates the dairy dilemma by exploring the hidden realities of how milk is produced today. Travelling between farms across Britain, Ireland, Europe and North America, she meets dairy farmers and their cows, examining the challenges facing contemporary dairy farming, the rise of veganism and plant-based alternatives, and emerging ideas about how humans and cattle might coexist differently. Combining sharp wit with compassionate reporting and rigorous research, Shortall invites readers to reconsider their own relationship with dairy, and to ask what a more sustainable and ethical future for milk might look like.

Leben und Sterben

Argentine Freedom
is the first account of the most disruptive figure in Argentine history since the nation’s return to democracy. In just a few years, Javier Milei rose from television economist and social media provocateur to president of a country long defined by crisis, state intervention, and political polarization. His ascent has sparked fierce debate at home and abroad: Is Milei a threat to democracy, a neo-conservative, or the herald of a much larger revival of the classical liberal tradition?

The book provides a balanced examination of Milei’s rise to power. Rather than judging his policies, economic historian Sebastián Álvarez and political philosopher Ezequiel Spector ask a deeper set of questions: Where do Milei’s ideas come from? How do they relate to Argentina’s liberal tradition and its history of populism, socialism, and authoritarianism? And what does his presidency reveal about the tensions between liberty, equality, and democracy in the twenty-first century?

Blending economic history, political philosophy, and contemporary analysis,
Argentine Freedom
traces Argentina’s long ideological arc from the liberal foundations of the 1853 Constitution, through Peronism, military rule, neoliberal reform, and the interventionist turn after the 2001 collapse, to the two liberal “waves” that culminated in Milei’s election. Along the way, it unpacks the meanings of liberalism and libertarianism, contrasts them with their main rivals, and situates Milei within both national history and a broader global surge of anti-establishment leaders.

The resulting book offers a new way to understand Javier Milei as a political actor—and Argentina as a country once again at a crossroads.

Javier Milei and the Libertarian Wave

Argentine Freedom

'Work it harder, make it better, do it faster, makes us stronger', sang die französische Band Daft Punk 2001 und schuf damit im anbrechenden Jahrtausend die bis heute gültige Hymne für den Kapitalismus.
Need for Speed
