This edited volume demonstrates the intellectual power of Marxist thought. From the vantagepoint of multiple fields and disciplines, the authors compare Marxist and non-Marxist approaches regarding a wide range of issues and articulate how being informed by a Marxist approach can produce a unique, essential and comprehensive analysis of pressing political, social, economic and ecological issues. The series of volumes of which this is the first suggests that Marxism is an important step in the development of human knowledge overall and encourages non-Marxists to view Marxism as a contribution that needs to be engaged.

The Power of Marxist Thought

This book argues that, beyond the apparent fracture between humans and Nature that defines the Anthropocene crisis, there exists a shared cultural foundation in legal traditions, converging on the recognition of the intrinsic value of Nature and of the ecosystem interconnections between human and non-human life. The legal innovations explored here-particularly from Latin America- embody a holistic, integrated view coherent with the ecosystem approach. It is proposed that these ideas offer potential not only within their own legal systems but also as models for Western legal frameworks. Divided into five parts, the book maintains a balance between theoretical and empirical, combining foundational legal and philosophical discussions with practical case studies and applications. Part I establishes the theoretical foundation, setting the conceptual framework of the volume. Part II builds on this by addressing the methodological implications and laying the groundwork for a transition from anthropocentric to ecocentric governance. The third and fourth parts bridge theory with practice, exploring participatory tools, bottom-up initiatives, and challenges to traditional environmental law, illustrating how theoretical advancements are applied in specific legal and policy contexts. The fifth part focuses on jurisprudence and the role of the judiciary, providing an empirical analysis of how legal principles are interpreted and enforced in judicial settings. This progression ensures that the book effectively integrates theory with empirical research, underscoring its interdisciplinary and practical significance. State Capture through Media Clientelism in Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina: Challenges to Normative Power Europe contributes to the understanding of the rise of stabilitocracies and competitive authoritarian regimes in the Western Balkans by examining the case of freedom and independence of the media.State capture is explored through freedom of the media and capture of media outlets by the government in two candidates for European Union (EU) accession-Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The book argues that this is a consequence of the very process of EU accession-vis-à-vis its democracy-promotion strategy-which has created the unintended consequences of state capture and rent-seeking. Rather than democratic institution-building, geopolitical interests such as the recent Russian war in Ukraine, Kosovo, lithium in Serbia and the migrant crisis have all been the catalysts for democratic backsliding. This rise of state capture and media clientelism thus challenges the very idea of Normative Power Europe (NPE) as an exporter of democratic values and norms to third-world countries. Utilizing a range of interviews (with journalists, media experts, scholars of media studies and politicians) and documentary analysis of secondary and primary sources, the book asks whether we can observe a similar trend of state capture-specifically political clientelism vis-à-vis the media-in the newly emerging illiberal democracies in the Balkans as a novelty, or if lessons can be drawn from EU members in the post-accession phase. It also discusses whether the political culture in both Bosnia and Serbia shaped their media environments and contributed to an overall government pervasiveness in the media sphere that is unique to that particular region as opposed to the EU Member States, and what recommendations the EU needs to consider in order to promote media freedom in the Western Balkan applicants without endangering basic democratic norms.State Capture through Media Clientelism in Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina will be of great interest to students and scholars of EU and European studies, political science and media studies.
