A manifesto in lectures about the material conditions and absurdities of being a writer and adjunct professor under capitalism-by turns funny, angry, despairing, and hopeful-from a writer who "has invented a new form" (Annie Ernaux). 
 
 In the spring of 2025, Heroines and Drifts author Kate Zambreno taught a weeklong nonfiction "craft" lecture at Columbia University, thinking through the crises of the adjunct loop in the United States and the question of labor and writing in publishing and the university. This project became more absurd, and more urgent, as the Trump administration quickly turned to authoritarianism and the university became complicit with the administration, creating a dystopian and paranoid atmosphere in which students were kidnapped from university housing and student protestors were expelled. How can we study together and create under such conditions? 
 
 The resulting essays are funny, angry, often in despair, and somehow also full of optimism as to the future of writing, even amidst the collapse of the institutions meant to support writers and students. Zambreno engages with texts including Sofia Samatar's Opacities, Fred Moten and Stefano Harney's The Undercommons, Noémi Lefebvre's The Poetics of Work, Heike Geissler's Seasonal Associate, and Samuel Delaney's Times Square Red, Times Square Blue.

This open access book investigates the role played by copyright on the digitisation of cultural heritage from three angles: the theoretical differences between cultural property law and copyright; a comparative analysis of the EU, UK, and US; and analysis of current practices and concerns, based on empirical research. As heritage digitisation projects become increasingly common for purposes such as preservation and access, the impact of copyright is also becoming more problematic. In order to provide a full and current picture of the copyright problem, the book first introduces the reader to the debates on the scope and ownership of cultural heritage and provides an overview of the copyright implications of the digitisation process and newer uses, including 2D and 3D scanning; virtual and augmented reality; text and data mining; and artificial intelligence. The author then divides the main critical analysis into three parts, referred to as the 'clashes with copyright'. The first, clash in theory, lies between cultural property law and copyright justification theories. The second clash is in the different legal approaches to digitising in-copyright, public domain, orphan, out-of-commerce and unpublished works in the chosen jurisdictions, focusing on the relevant rights and defences. The third clash is in the interests of stakeholders, based on public reactions to existing projects and cases, supported by interviews with heritage professionals engaging in digitisation. By placing itself in this particular intersection of law, heritage, and technology, the book will be of interest to both intellectual property academics and cultural heritage professionals. This book explores human vulnerability through the lens of natural law theory. Beginning with a detailed examination of natural law ethics, centred upon the virtues (Part One), it sets out the relationship between natural law and human vulnerability. To be human is to be vulnerable; but vulnerability must itself be understood by reference to the human goods that are the central concern of natural law ethics.
