Hegel's philosophy is often presented as a reconciliation between thought and the world, and thus logic and metaphysics. But what is the basis of this reconciliation? In this book, Clark Wolf argues that the key to Hegel's transformation of philosophy lies in his recognition of the special logical basis of the humanly made world. Human artifacts and institutions are not merely represented by concepts; concepts are necessary for their very existence. For this reason, Hegel sees the human world, the world of spirit or Geist, as more central in philosophy than the mind-independent world of nature. Hegel's philosophy is thus a humanism. Wolf argues that this humanistic conception of philosophy is justified in Hegel's Science of Logic, since its logical basis is his theory of concepts. Through a detailed interpretation of the Doctrine of the Concept, this book sheds new light on Hegelian idealism.

Hegel's Inversion of Philosophy

Bringing together Michel Foucault's aesthetics of existence and Richard Shusterman's somaesthetics, this volume provides a critical comparison of two of the most influential philosophical theories of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Introduced by a comprehensive overview of both concepts by editors Stefano Marino and Valentina Antoniol, the ensuing chapters interrogate the affinities and variances between Foucault's and Shusterman's philosophies. Building on the interdisciplinary character of somaesthetics and aesthetics of existence, international scholars explore these ideas through a wide range of topics ranging from care of the self and of the social self to the ethical and political challenges posed by themes as white ignorance, construction of resistances, and production of subjectivities. Given the central role played by the body in both concepts, this volume also affords particular attention to the philosophy of sexuality. Demonstrating the value of reading these two thinkers together through the adoption of radical interpretive perspectives, Foucault's Aesthetics of Existence and Shusterman's Somaesthetics highlights the potentialities and the relevance of Foucault's and Shusterman's theories, even with respect to our actualité.

Why do we care about writing well? Should we worry about how to write prose that's true, good and beautiful? Perhaps we need to dismantle our idea of what truth, goodness and beauty mean in the first place. For 2400 years philosophers have written meditations, aphorisms, handbooks, essays, letters, confessions, stories, plays, diatribes, and dialogues. Setting out a new way of looking at the role of writing in philosophical enquiry, David Arndt explains how writing has always been the act of thinking on paper - a meditative practice integral to the search for wisdom. He describes how different kinds of thought - demonstrative, interpretive, narrative and perspectival - are expressed in different genres of writing, breaking down the highest questions of philosophy in clear and witty terms. This is both a meditation and a practical guide, with the book's final section setting out fifty principles of composition to demonstrate how these theoretical insights can in turn guide the way we actually write. These principles will help readers to become better writers and, in the process, become better thinkers.
