Perspectives From Legal Philosophy

This open access book argues that the scarcity created by the under-production of vaccines during the Covid-19 years was an entirely predictable, even legitimate consequence of how the international patent system works. Far from being a technical sub-discipline of intellectual property law that simply protects inventions, the international patent system is prismatic of the ways in which we fail to adapt to the challenges of our times: patent rights are intended to incentivise innovation for societal benefit, but in fact facilitate predictable injustice. The patent system ignores the care-constituted nature of our lives, prioritising limiting notions of fairness at the cost of structural harms. The Social Life of Intellectual Property proposes an ethic of just care to temper justice in the global governance of technology. It explores intellectual property as recurring social processes and explains why individual agency and shared responsibility are implicated. On an ecologically imperilled planet, and in a time between pandemics, we must reckon with what we are socialised to believe is legally possible. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com.

THE MUST-READ GUIDE TO THE TRADE WAR 'A smart, vivid and humane account of the way the world really works' TIM HARFORD 'This is the book to read if you want to understand what might be about to hit the world economy' EVAN DAVIS The dangerous race for self-sufficiency has begun. Be warned. Nations are turning away from each other. Faith in globalisation has been fatally undermined by the pandemic, the energy crisis, surging trade frictions and swelling great power rivalry. A new vision is vying to replace what we've known for many decades. This vision - Exile Economics - entails a rejection of interdependence, a downgrading of multilateral collaboration and a striving for greater national self-sufficiency. The supporters of this new order argue it will establish genuine security, prosperity and peace. But is this promise achievable? Or a seductive delusion? Through the stories of globally traded commodities - from silicon to steel and from soybeans to solar panels - economics journalist Ben Chu illustrates the intricate web of interdependence that has come to bind nations together - and underlines the dangers of this new push to isolationism. Exile Economics is an essential guide to this new world in all its promise and peril.

A powerful exploration of how Hegel's ideas about freedom can speak to social injustice today. One might be forgiven for feeling that the philosophical tradition, notoriously replete with seemingly aloof and problematic men like Hegel, has little to offer contemporary conversations about justice. Yet for Shannon Hoff, Hegel's ideas about freedom in particular contain vital resources for efforts to redress racism, sexism, colonialism, ableism, and capitalism today. In How to Read Hegel Now, Hoff rereads the German philosopher alongside our most compelling thinkers about how oppression disavows our common humanity, including Frantz Fanon, Jessica Benjamin, Saba Mahmood, la paperson, Jean-Paul Sartre, Georges Canguilhem, and Rosemarie Garland-Thomson. Along the way, Hoff recovers in Hegel a new vision for human freedom that challenges the heritage of modern liberalism he helped to construct.

A PUBLISHERS WEEKLY BEST BOOK OF 2025 A FINANCIAL TIMES BEST BOOK OF 2025 'Makes a convincing case for how tech became radicalized' BLOOMBERG What happens if the world's richest and most powerful men decide to dismantle democracy? In Gilded Rage, New York Times bestselling author Jacob Silverman takes us inside the surreal, high-stakes world of Silicon Valley. This is the story of the political awakening and radicalization of a cabal of tech billionaires and trillionaires and their descent into ideological extremism. Flush with cash from the zero-interest era, addicted to their own mythology, these men have began reshaping the world in their image - and it should terrify us all. At the center is Elon Musk, the mogul whose obsession with the 'woke mind virus' has turned him from a tech innovator to an ideological crusader. But Musk is just the beginning. Silverman maps a sprawling network of radicalized elites - from Peter Thiel and JD Vance to the financiers bankrolling Donald Trump - who are using their platforms and their money to ensure a political revolution that's already underway. We meet the billionaires funding life-extension labs and embracing apocalyptic visions of AI. We examine the populist rhetoric that is leading to the ruthless dismantling of democratic norms. And we enter the strange, darkly comic world of the tech-oligarchy where libertarian dreams meet authoritarian impulses, and where the people with the most influence over our lives are the least accountable. Silverman travels from San Francisco to Miami, New York to DC, following a movement that's rewriting the rules and oftentimes fighting a war against reality itself. With sharp reporting and a cast of extraordinary characters, Gilded Rage is a gripping, essential dispatch from the front lines of the billionaire revolution.

Wie man Populisten besiegt

A razor-sharp analysis of the increasing - and terrifying - parallels between Trump's America and Putin's Russia, from the former BBC Moscow Correspondent and Sunday Times bestselling author Martin Sixsmith."Gripping, terrifying, urgent, necessary." - Ian Rankin "Anyone who cares for democracy and freedom, and who fears for the future of both, should go and read this book." - Jonathan DimblebyLong Live the King. Since his re-election as US president, Donald Trump has made good on things he only dreamed of accomplishing in his first term. He has smashed constitutional constraints, trampled on free speech, suborned the judiciary, demonised the media and crushed protests on the streets. He has secured the backing of America's oligarchs by the offer of mutual enrichment and inflated his personal wealth by flouting ethical standards. US foreign policy is no longer based on values but on greed, while at home the White House has intervened in almost every area of people's lives, sending the National Guard into America's cities, telling educators what schoolchildren should be taught and threatening universities when they beg to differ.According to Martin Sixsmith, the BBC's long-serving former Moscow and Washington Correspondent, it is all eerily familiar from what Russia went through in the early-2000s.Despots is Sixsmith's account of how two aspiring dictators came to power in nominally electoral democracies then dismantled the pillars of democracy from within, one following confidently in the footsteps of the other. As in Putin's Russia, so in Trump's America: the US is fast-forwarding through what Russia endured in the first five years under Putin, and the parallels this time are much clearer, more overt and increasingly terrifying.Praise for Martin Sixsmith"To read Sixsmith is to want to read more Sixsmith" - FORBES"Sixsmith has the knack of delivering complex material with a clear voice" - THE TIMES"The virtue and originality of Martin Sixsmith's The War on Nerves is to see almost every aspect of the stand-off in psychological terms" - THE ECONOMIST"The Russia Conundrum is essential reading for anyone who really wants to understand 21st century Russia" - BUSINESS INSIDER"Highly engaging . . . thrillingly told . . . My Sins Go With Me is a powerful story of a history that remains far from settled" - DAILY TELEGRAPH

'Michael Auerbach has one of the most original minds I've ever encountered . . . This is a dazzling and entertaining book . . . But it is also an urgent warning' PATRICK RADDEN KEEFE, author of Empire of Pain A brilliant exploration of the phenomenon of prediction markets that asks: what happens when democracy becomes another commodity? Prediction markets are sweeping the world, fundamentally changing the nature of gambling - and the very ways in which we attempt to divine the future. Posed as binary 'Yes/No' questions about future events, prediction markets allow any difference of opinion - whether on pop culture or politics, wars or assassinations - to be financialised. A regulatory minefield with moral implications that divide nations, governments and bettors, they have proved as effective at accurately predicting the timing of missile strikes as they have at calling the outcomes of elections. But are these markets really a new phenomenon? And what does it mean when those tasked with safeguarding democracy hold financial stakes in its volatility? From Renaissance Rome, where merchants wagered on papal conclaves, through nineteenth-century London's wartime coffee house gossip, to the Pentagon's ill-fated terrorism futures exchange and blockchain-based betting on Polymarket today, The Big Bet tells the gripping five-hundred-year story of a permissive regime that no one designed and no one voted for.Drawing on deep expertise, Michael Auerbach examines how these markets are changing our world, and what they mean for the future where democracy becomes just another commodity to be priced and traded. Because prediction markets are not an anomaly - they are the logical endpoint of a society that has applied market capitalism to every aspect of life. And in a world where everything is a wager and nothing is off limits, knowing where the chips will fall matters more than ever.
