Historische Geschlechterforschung

Architects and artists have always acknowledged over the cen- turies that Rome is rightly called the »eternal city«. Rome is eternal above all because it was always young, always »in its prime«. Here the buildings that defined the West appeared over more than 2000 years, here the history of European architecture was written. The foundations were laid even in ancient Roman times, when the first attempts were made to design interiors and thus make space open to experience as something physical. And at that time the Roman architects also started to develop building types that are still valid today, thus creating the cornerstone of later Western architecture. In it Rome’s primacy remained unbroken – whether it was with old St. Peter’s as the first medieval basilica or new St. Peter’s as the building in which Bramante and Michelangelo developed the High Renaissance, or with works by Bernini and Borromini whose rich and lucid spatial forms were to shape Ba- roque as far as Vienna, Bohemia and Lower Franconia. When Louis Kahn, one of the greats of 20th-century architecture, confes- sed: »My mind is full of Roman greatness«, this no longer applies only to those times. For three decades, absolutely central buildings have been emerging again in the eternal city. From museums to sacred buildings to large music and event centers: Rome today has true landmarks of the present day – from Renzo Piano to Jean Nouvel and Zaha Hadid. All this is comprehensible only if it is presented historically, i. e. in chronological sequence, and therefore the guide has not been arranged topographically as usual but chronologically. This means that one is not led in random sequence from a Baroque building to an ancient or a modern one, but the historical development is fol- lowed successively. Every epoch is preceded by an introduction that identifies its key features. This produces a continuous, lavish- ly illustrated history of the architecture of Rome – and thus at the same time of the whole of the West. Practical handling is guaran- teed by an alphabetical index and detailed maps, whose informa- tion does not just immediately illustrate the historical picture, but also makes it possible to choose a personal route through history. In order to clarify the historical development, the key buildings of each period and other major works are especially emphasized both in the text and on the maps.

The Architecture of Rome

Gregormeister

This book is dedicated to monks, priests and priest-monks ("hieromonachoi") as copyists, readers, and owners of manuscripts in the Christian East. Did they only read and write, or did they also repair manuscripts? What texts did they copy? And what purpose did their books serve? By addressing these and related questions, alternating between overviews and case studies, the essays in this volume aim to shed new light on the cultural role of monks and clergy active in the Christian East-particularly in the Sinai and the Holy Land, with an additional focus on Antioch-between the 9th and the 16th centuries. Special attention is given to books written in Greek, Arabic, Syriac, and Georgian.

Monastic Manuscripts from the Eastern Mediterranean (Sinai, Jerusalem, Antioch)

Transottomanica / Osteuropäisch-osmanisch-persische Mobilitätsdynamiken

This volume explores the daily lives, security measures, and health practices in the borderland regions of the Ottoman Empire and its successor states (1700-1939). With contributions from early-career and senior scholars, the book examines the complex dynamics of these frontier zones, covering regions in the Middle East and Southeastern Europe. It delves into how local communities navigated imperial control, national borders, and quarantine systems, revealing the intersections of public health, military strategies, and border security. By focusing on these marginal areas, the book provides fresh insights into imperial legacies, state formation, and the challenges of governance in the (post-)Ottoman world.

From the Frontiers of the Empire to the Borders of the Nations

Weimarer Autoren in Amerika

After the First World War, the Berlin theater critic Alfred Kerr travels to America and Great Britain. Kerr, who calls New York the "greatest city in the world", visits the Broadway theaters and Wall Street, marvels at the subway, Times Square and Grand Central Station. He writes about Eugene O'Neill's The Hairy Ape, talks to the satirist Henry Louis Mencken, the railroad magnate W. Averell Harriman - banking partner of the Bush family - and Adolph Ochs, the publisher of the New York Times. In London, he meets the poet George Bernard Shaw. But the book, written concisely and wittily, is much more than just a travelogue. After the war, when the mood in America and England became extremely hostile towards Germany, when German professors were dismissed and propaganda films agitated against Germany, Kerr is on a mission to explore the situation and ask for understanding and help for the fragile Weimar democracy.

"Although a major literary and cultural figure in pre-1933 Germany, the writer and critic Alfred Kerr is sadly little known in Britain where he spent his last years in exile and where he is best known, if at all, as the father of artist and children's author Judith Kerr. By translating Kerr's exile memoir, I Went to England, Alan Bance has already helped to redress this balance. He now brings Kerr's reflections on America and Britain in the years after the First World War to an anglophone audience, capturing Kerr's individual and aphoristic style. Kerr's reflections on subjects as diverse as postwar Anglo-American attitudes to the Germans, the skyscrapers of New York, a trip to the Henley Regatta or the beauty of the Scottish landscape offer a brilliant and kaleidoscopic view of a German traveller's experiences in the USA and Britain in the early 1920s."
-Susan Reed, Lead Curator Germanic Collections, British Library, London

Has there ever been a better traveling companion than Alfred Kerr? Urbane, keen-eyed, and generous in spirit, he surveyed New York in the Roaring 20s-"the most alert, the most stupendous, the truly newest of new worlds"-capturing its throbbing intensity in quick brushstrokes before taking on Britain, with London as his starting point. "New York and London" is a kaleidoscopic, breathless tour straddling two continents, filled to the brim with rapid-fire observations, philosophical asides, pithy character studies, and sharp commentary on national character. "My advantage is that I come from somewhere else, with a fresh eye for differences," he wrote. Precisely.
-William Grimes, The New York Times

Alfred Kerr, feuilletonist and phrase-coining tastemaker, was the great theater critic of the Weimar Republic. As this pungent and addictive volume shows, he was also one of the great travel writers.
-Drew Lichtenberg, Dramaturg and Theater Critic

A Journey After The Great War

New York and London

The Afterlife of Ottoman Europe examines how Bosnian Muslims navigated the Ottoman and Habsburg domains following the Habsburg occupation of Bosnia Herzegovina after the 1878 Berlin Congress. Prominent members of the Ottoman imperial polity, Bosnian Muslims became minority subjects of Austria-Hungary, developing a relationship with the new authorities in Vienna while transforming their interactions with Istanbul and the rest of the Muslim world. Leyla Amzi-Erdoğdular explores the enduring influence of the Ottoman Empire during this period—an influence perpetuated by the efforts of the imperial state from afar, and by its former subjects in Bosnia Herzegovina negotiating their new geopolitical reality. Muslims' endeavors to maintain their prominence and shape their organizations and institutions influenced imperial considerations and policies on occupation, sovereignty, minorities, and migration. This book introduces Ottoman archival sources and draws on Ottoman and Eastern European historiographies to reframe the study of Habsburg Bosnia Herzegovina within broader intellectual and political trends at the turn of the twentieth century. Tracing transregional connections, imperial continuities, and multilayered allegiances, The Afterlife of Ottoman Europe bridges Ottoman, Islamic, Middle Eastern, and Balkan studies. Amzi-Erdoğdular tells the story of Muslims who redefined their place and influence in both empires and the modern world, and argues for the inclusion of Islamic intellectual history within the history of Bosnia Herzegovina and Eastern Europe.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR The Right has spent decades trying to win elections. The Left has spent decades deciding who controls everything else.In How the Regime Rules, New York Times bestselling author Christopher F. Rufo delivers his most explosive work yet, exposing the hidden architecture of American power and revealing a battle plan for the New Right to dismantle it.The Regime is not a conspiracy. It is something far more formidable—a sprawling network of Deep State bureaucrats, media gatekeepers, university administrators, corporate executives, and ideological enforcers who dictate what Americans can say, what they are permitted to believe, and who gets destroyed for stepping out of line. Its reach is ubiquitous, its accountability virtually nonexistent. And for decades, conservatives have mistaken capitulation for statesmanship. Rufo demolishes the comforting fiction that institutions can be neutral, that the marketplace of ideas is fair, or that the Right can simply retreat from the contest for influence. The system is not broken. It is functioning precisely as its architects intended.Rufo knows how to expose the machinery and dismantle it. He transformed DEI from an untouchable orthodoxy into a political liability. He propelled allegations of Somali welfare fraud into the national spotlight. He identified structural vulnerabilities, punctured manufactured consensus, and demonstrated how seemingly impregnable bastions of authority can be forced onto the defensive. Now he reveals the playbook. From Samuel Adams and the Sons of Liberty to dismantling ideological strongholds in higher education, Rufo uncovers the mechanics of political domination. How narratives harden into unquestionable truths, how elites perpetuate their own authority, and how disciplined insurgents can upend an entire political order.Rufo agrees with the Left on one fundamental point: Every institution is an instrument of a particular vision of society. In How the Regime Rules, he argues that conservatives must stop mistaking political restraint for moral superiority, cultivate a formidable counter-elite, and master the levers of influence that shape American life. The Regime has perfected the art of ruling without appearing to rule. Now Rufo turns its own methods against it, showing the Right how to reclaim America's commanding heights and chart a new course for the country.
