The new collection from the Poet Laureate

'I can never forget the sense of pure astonishment I felt when I first read Mieko Kawakami' - Haruki Murakami 'The most exciting Japanese novelist at work today' - The Times A heart-stopping story of teenage girls on the brink in 1990s Tokyo from the International Booker Prize-Shortlisted author of Heaven and Breasts and Eggs. Hana has nothing but she's hopeful. She's fifteen years old. She lives in a tiny apartment in a suburb of Tokyo with her young mother, a hostess at a local dive bar. They have no money, no security. Then Kimiko appears. Kimiko is older, a bright light in Hana's dark world. Together they set up Lemon, a bar that, despite its shabby setting and seedy clientele, becomes a haven for Hana. Suddenly Hana has a job she loves, friends to share her days with, and the glittering promise of money. She feels like a normal girl. She feels invincible. But in the narrow alleys of Sangenjaya, nothing is as it seems. Soon all of Hana's hope, her optimism, and her drive, will be tested to the limit . . . A story of enduring friendship and deep betrayal, Sisters in Yellow is a masterpiece of teenage dreams and adult cruelties that confirms Mieko Kawakami as one of the great writers of her generation. 'Relentlessly riveting . . . My heart felt very tender reading this' - Frances Cha, author of If I Had Your Face Readers love Sisters in Yellow: 'My new favourite book of ALL TIME. The ending absolutely destroyed me.' 'A powerful, emotionally charged exploration of friendship, survival and the quiet brutality of inequality' 'Mieko Kawakami doesn't need a high-speed chase to create tension; she lets a heavy, unsettling mood seep into the floorboards' 'Confirms Kawakami's place as one of the most vital voices in contemporary literature' 'The character building is second to none . . . Mieko Kawakami is a generational talent' 'This is Kawakami at her best. Not for a second does the pace let up.'

Sisters in Yellow

What does it mean to be governed and what does it mean to resist? Examining how communities form amidst social and political turbulence, this open access book presents four case studies that demonstrate the power of organic social formations over imposed order. Understanding this formation of community in terms of 'ungovernability' and a 'poetics of resistance',Ungovernable Spaces charts a movement from oppression, through transformation, into imagining, and finally emergence. Throughout the book, the authors engage methods of situated practice and related modes of writing and image-making to consider a range of global case studies: the destruction of the Mecca apartment building in Chicago's South Side in 1952, following a decade of resistance from the building's predominantly African American occupants; M.K. Gandhi's practices of social activism including the Salt March protest of 1930, and the daily practice of spinning and intermittent fasts; the Ciudad Abierta (Open City), a radical pedagogical experiment started by a poet and an architect in Valparaíso, Chile in 1970; and, finally, the urban ecologies developing on either side of Belfast's 'peace walls' in the wake of the Troubles and 1998's Good Friday Agreement. Structured via four spatial configurations - the grid, the charkha, the constellation, and the cluster -each case study explores community formation through artistic and aesthetic practices that resist and unsettle forms of hegemonic order. A truly interdisciplinary work at the intersection of poetry, art and spatial practice, Ungovernable Spaces argues for the importance of ethics, aesthetics, imagination and ecology in developing, of necessity, a new poetics of 'us.' Ungovernable Spaces

Studies in International Law

This open access book brings together scholars primarily from the Global South, rooted in critical legal traditions, who reflect on international law and its role in (re-)producing social hierarchies in times of crisis and catastrophe. How should legal scholars articulate critique in catastrophic times? Should critical voices tone it down, in favour of pragmatism, when faced with deteriorating social conditions, growing inequality, protracted violence, planetary collapse, authoritarianism and xenophobia? Or are they more urgently needed than ever? Critical scholarship has long warned of the limits of international law and its complicity with structures and relations of domination and the (re)production of social hierarchies. Yet, contemporary catastrophes have led to its revitalisation as a language of both expert counsel and political demand, drowning out calls for structural change for the sake of realism and stability. This book was inspired by two distinct, yet related, developments. One is the mobilisation of, and against, law by social movements representing the interests of distinct socially constructed groups facing crisis or catastrophe. The other is the reception of, and response to, such mobilisation by international law scholars and practitioners. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. Open access was funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation.

SHORTLISTED FOR THE TS ELIOT PRIZE 2025 SHORTLISTED FOR THE JHALAK PRIZE 2026 '(c) Codex' SHORTLISTED FOR THE FORWARD PRIZE FOR BEST SINGLE POEM LONGLISTED FOR THE GRIFFIN POETRY PRIZE 2026 'Profound, sheer originality... a tantalising jigsaw puzzle of a book' Tristram Fane-Saunders, Telegraph In The New Carthaginians, time - and with it the world - is out of joint. A hijacked plane lands at Entebbe International Airport in 1976, triggering the crisis that will lead to Idi Amin's Uganda becoming a pariah state and, within a few years, to the young Nick Makoha's flight from the country. A mysterious writer daubs poetic slogans on the walls of late-'70s New York City, signing them SAMO(c). Three characters who are also one - the Poet, a Black Icarus and a resurrected Jean-Michel Basquiat - journey through a time that is both our own and not, watching TV, discussing art and literature and tucking their wings into their jackets on the way to airport security. Concerned throughout with flight and falling, the sample and the loop, The New Carthaginians is a poetry collection of staggering originality: a work by an author at the height of his powers, in which the familiar Western canons of art, history and philosophy are prised apart and reassembled in a new configuration. Drawing on Basquiat's technique of the 'exploded' collage, our heroes' odyssey gathers the symbols of a new mythos, through which the othering of Black life might be undone and the stage set for some fresh emergence, some transfigured understanding of myth and life. 'Hold that note,' writes the poet. 'In this place you are no longer the chorus ... In any future, remember you are a New Carthaginian.' A FINANCIAL TIMES BEST SUMMER BOOK OF POETRY 2025 'In this book, Nick Makoha has found an otherworldly, visionary voice and diction that arrest you from the first page and never let you go.'
