Governing AI is about getting AI right. Building upon AI scholarship in science and technology studies, technology law, business ethics, and computer science, it documents potential risks and actual harms associated with AI, lists proposed solutions to AI-related problems around the world, and assesses their impact. The book presents a vast range of theoretical debates and empirical evidence to document how and how well technical solutions, business self-regulation, and legal regulation work. It is a call to think inside and outside the box. Technical solutions, business self-regulation, and especially legal regulation can mitigate and even eliminate some of the potential risks and actual harms arising from the development and use of AI. However, the long-term health of the relationship between technology and society depends on whether ordinary people are empowered to participate in making informed decisions to govern the future of technology - AI included.

Governing AI

This book is the first investigation of the relationship between EU digital sovereignty and sustainability strategies. It maps the ambitions and limitations of EU digital strategic autonomy and explores the structural challenges underlying its relationship with its green transition objectives in the context of the ongoing wars in neighbouring European countries and the consequent tensions in the EU energy sector. The EU is racing to achieve technological independence from third countries and foreign multinational companies to protect its digital sovereignty and preserve its fundamental rights. In the EU, digitalisation and the green transformation are seen as twin transitions. Yet, EU digital sovereignty strategies have a significant environmental cost. This open access book investigates the role played by copyright on the digitisation of cultural heritage from three angles: the theoretical differences between cultural property law and copyright; a comparative analysis of the EU, UK, and US; and analysis of current practices and concerns, based on empirical research. As heritage digitisation projects become increasingly common for purposes such as preservation and access, the impact of copyright is also becoming more problematic. In order to provide a full and current picture of the copyright problem, the book first introduces the reader to the debates on the scope and ownership of cultural heritage and provides an overview of the copyright implications of the digitisation process and newer uses, including 2D and 3D scanning; virtual and augmented reality; text and data mining; and artificial intelligence. The author then divides the main critical analysis into three parts, referred to as the 'clashes with copyright'. The first, clash in theory, lies between cultural property law and copyright justification theories. The second clash is in the different legal approaches to digitising in-copyright, public domain, orphan, out-of-commerce and unpublished works in the chosen jurisdictions, focusing on the relevant rights and defences. The third clash is in the interests of stakeholders, based on public reactions to existing projects and cases, supported by interviews with heritage professionals engaging in digitisation. Master's Thesis from the year 2025 in the subject Leadership and Human Resources - Recruiting, grade: 1,2, University of Applied Sciences Dortmund, language: English, abstract: This master's thesis explores the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in modern recruitment processes with a particular focus on applicants' trust. As digitalization and AI increasingly transform the world of work, organizations are adopting AI-supported recruiting tools to enhance efficiency, standardization, and data-driven decision-making. At the same time, the use of AI in personnel selection raises important questions regarding transparency, fairness, and acceptance from the applicants' perspective.

The objective of this thesis is to examine how applicants perceive AI-assisted recruitment processes and which aspects are relevant for the development of trust in this context. To address this research objective, a qualitative research design was chosen. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with participants who had either experienced AI-supported recruitment processes or reflected on their expectations toward such processes.

The empirical data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis following Kuckartz' approach. This method allows for a systematic examination of subjective perceptions, attitudes, and evaluations, while combining theory-driven and data-driven coding. The analysis focuses on applicants' experiences with different forms of AI usage in recruitment, their expectations toward human and technological decision-making, and their assessment of AI-supported processes within the broader candidate journey.

By linking theoretical concepts of trust in technology with empirical insights from applicants, this thesis contributes to the growing body of literature on AI in recruiting. In addition, it provides a structured foundation for further academic research and offers valuable insights for organizations seeking to better understand applicant perspectives on AI-supported recruitment processes.
