What is cultural appropriation in fashion and how can understanding its causes, consequences and reoccurrences help us to challenge it in the future? As part of the Fashion in Action series of short books aimed at rallying readers on global issues in fashion, Benjamin Linley Wild highlights the long and complicated history of appropriation, guiding us on the pressing question of where we go next. Chapter one considers where we have been - what are the words we have used and what theories continue to frame and potentially hinder discussions about appropriation within the fashion industry? Chapter two moves on to where we are now - what does appropriation look like in the fashion industry and how can understanding this help both educators and consumers overcome the circularity of the current debates? Chapter three draws together the theories and their potential implications to unravel the riddle of appropriation and enable us to look to the future with suggested calls for action. Revolutionary Anxieties studies the role of the liberal elite during the Egyptian transitional period (2011-2014). It shows how the election of the Islamists caused anxiety among the liberal and cultural elites that constituted Cairo's exclusive society. The book examines their relationship with other Egyptians--those who were not part of Cairo's exclusive society, including their servants, the city's poor, and members of Islamist parties. It further illustrates how the narratives of "others" relied on dichotomies such as "ugly versus beautiful" and "civilized versus uncivilized," familiar to scholars from the colonial era. The book also shows how, during the transitional period, Cairo's liberal elite attempted to assert their superiority in various fields. Performative practices related to gender, culture, and art; etiquette and manners; the use of foreign languages; and knowledge of Egyptian history all manifested the cultural capital of the liberal elite. One purpose of this book is to explore the uses of the past in legitimizing and reinventing current cultural and socio-political asymmetries. Throughout, I demonstrate how access to narratives of Egypt's past--understood as "liberal" and "civilized"--functioned as a critical resource for the elite who opposed the new Islamist rulers. The insistence on Egypt's true "civilized" character, which was seen as endangered by the Islamists, was closely tied to political calculations.

The everyday realities of financial and work insecurity that drive right- and left-wing populism In Insecurity Politics, Lorenza Antonucci examines the lived, everyday experiences that underpin political disaffection. Countering the reductive portrayals of populist voters as left-behind outsiders, Antonucci focuses on the ordinary, yet increasingly precarious, realities of work and financial instability as key to understanding the surge in populist support in both right- and left-wing politics. Drawing on robust comparative quantitative and qualitative analyses across nine European countries, Insecurity Politics describes the micro-level material and cultural dynamics that drive antiestablishment politics. It finds that dissatisfaction with work and a growing sense of financial insecurity fuel populist sentiments. Antonucci maps the evolving landscape of insecurity in contemporary Europe, tracing its roots to structural transformations of European welfare states and deep-seated cultural shifts. Proposing an original framework that combines cultural and economic explanations, the book shows how economic, social, and political factors shape receptivity to antiestablishment politics. Moving beyond conventional wisdom that attributes today’s populism to cultural backlash or globalization, Antonucci addresses a critical blind spot in current research. But Insecurity Politics offers more than a mere diagnosis; it also argues that a nuanced understanding of populist attitudes could inform a renewed political agenda—one more attuned to the complex realities of European citizens.
