Globalization is commonly described in trade and cultural terms but its impact on unions and collective bargaining is seldom assessed. The few studies of unions and globalization are mostly collections of cases studies of how unions can work together or with other alliance partners to defend against the power of multinational corporations. This book goes beyond the current research by asking how unions have tried to deal with globalization and how globalization might threaten the fundamental union mission of taking wages, hours and conditions of employment out of competition. The introductory chapter defines globalization and uses the case of the Detroit Three automakers (GM, Chrysler and Ford) to show how globalization can affect employment and union size, influence and relevancy. The second chapter shows how unions deal globalization through collective bargaining regarding outsourcing, alliances, strikes and political action, including lobbying and international work standards. The final chapter argues that the unions cannot continue unchanged in this age of globalization and asks what they must do to be effective and relevant.

Insights from Europe, North America and Australia

Employee Voice in the Global North

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Business economics - General, grade: 8.5, Maastricht University, language: English, abstract: There is a growing attention for the corporate social responsibility and socially responsible investing (SRI) of organisations, and shareholders are increasingly voicing their concerns. This research examined whether the different characteristics of these shareholders have an impact on the support for shareholder proposals that are related to SRI. The effects of European ownership and political views on SRI proposal success of US firms were researched. It was hypothesised that Europeans have a positive effect on proposal success since there is more progression with respect to CSR in Europe, compared to the US. No evidence could be found in support of this hypothesis; the results show that European ownership has no significant effect on proposal success. It was also hypothesised that Democratic shareholders increase the chances of proposal success when compared to Republicans. The results show that a 1% increase in the share of Democratic shareholders increases the amount of positive votes on SRI proposals with 0.25%. The same increase in the share of Republican shareholders increases these positive votes by 0.23%. The hypothesis can thus be accepted, although the impact is very small. Several limitations were discussed which could be addressed in future research; with an improved regression model the research question could be researched in a more secure manner.

Budgets are developed for diverse functions and activities in firms. They are designed to provide a basis for staff assessment, corporate growth, system effectiveness and efficiency for resources deployment in the best possible way to gain revenue, profit and brand advantages. Some budgets are formed by management and passed down to the employees, while another leadership involves some or all employees in budget planning and development to drive ownership and responsibility. Both approaches are productive, with more scholars favouring the bottom-up approach. This study will test the type of budgeting process at the ICT Service and the employees’ views on the process. If required, it will also focus on tweaking the structure to boost employee commitment and company performance.

Die Arbeit beleuchtet dazu die Verwendung des Critical Action Learnings im Zuge der agilen Transformation. Dafür wird zunächst die Methode Critical Action Learning von der Historie bis zu den Elementen, der Vorgehensweise, der Rolle des Sets und Facilitators sowie der Nutzen beschrieben. Anschließend wird der Komplex der agilen Transformation theoretische umrissen und auf das TRAFO-Modell, als ganzheitlichen Transformationsansatz, eingegangen. Im Anschluss werden beide Bereiche zusammengeführt und erläutert, wie Critical Action Learning in der agilen Transformation eingesetzt werden kann.Die Welt und Wirtschaft ist ein sich rasch veränderndes Konstrukt und der Mensch nur ein kleiner Baustein darin. Das Individuum und die Organisation müssen folglich neue Wege beschreiten und kontinuierlich flexibel neuen Anforderungen gerecht werden. Im Zuge dieser Entwicklung schlagen viele Organisationen den Weg der Agilität ein und stellen die Art der Zusammenarbeit mit dem Team, dem Kunden sowie Vorgehensweisen und Prozesse um. Durch die neu erlangte Beweglichkeit kann die Organisation sogar proaktiv gegenüber Herausforderungen und Veränderungen auftreten. Agile Unternehmen lernen durch Ausprobieren und den gemeinschaftlichen Austausch innerhalb und außerhalb der Organisation mittels sich selbst steuernder Teams.

        &lt;p&gt;Bis heute ist die Frage, ob ein präventiver Anspruch auf Beachtung von Schutzpflichten im Sinne von § 241 Abs. 2 BGB besteht, nicht geklärt. Im ersten Teil seiner Arbeit geht der Autor dieser Frage nach, indem er das Meinungsspektrum darstellt, die Entwicklungsgeschichte und die Natur von Schutzpflichten untersucht, das herrschende Verständnis vom Anspruch hinterfragt sowie die konkurrierenden Interessen des Schutzberechtigten und Schutzverpflichteten analysiert. Er kommt zu dem Ergebnis, dass ein Anspruch auf Beachtung von Schutzpflichten grundsätzlich besteht. Im zweiten Teil der Arbeit analysiert der Autor, welche Normen des allgemeinen Schuldrechts auf den Anspruch auf Beachtung von Schutzpflichten Anwendung finden.&lt;/p&gt;

Brazil is the world's sixth largest economy, has played a key role as one of the 'pink wave' administrations in Latin America, and was also responsible for wrecking the US-sponsored proposal for a Free Trade Area of the Americas. It is also one of the few large countries where social spending has risen and the distribution of income has improved in the last thirty years. &lt;br&gt; &lt;br&gt; However, as protests during the World Cup in 2014 have shown, the country remains highly unequal, unmet social needs are vast and its infrastructure is precarious.&lt;br&gt; &lt;br&gt; Alfredo Saad-Filho and Lecio Morais review the paradox that is modern-day Brazil. Focusing on the period from 1980 onwards, they analyse the tensions between the two systemic transitions to have dominated the country: the political transition from military rule to democracy, and to neoliberalism. The authors show how these transitions had contradictory logics and dynamics, yet ultimately became mutually supportive as they unfolded and intertwined.

&lt;p&gt;Responsible Innovation.  For some, this expression is only an oxymoron or, worse, a means of masking with a sheet of virtue economic practices that would otherwise appear selfish and self-interested. For others, theorists and actors of innovation, this expression represents a formidable lever of action and a rich conceptual source from which to draw new ways of innovating.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;The articulation between different levels of norms – economic and ethical, to which we can add the legal dimension – is not new, and is the subject of an in-depth reflection, decades old, around the idea of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). By taking up some debates on CSR, most of which are foreign to the current authors of responsible innovation, this book examines the various justifications that CSR brings in order to convince economic players, subject to powerful market forces, of their responsible commitment. But these are not enough. The book also explores the specific contribution of the concept of responsible innovation to coping with the technological, social and political breakthroughs generated by innovation, and is based on philosophical resources such as the ethics of virtue and the ethics of “care”.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt; &lt;/p&gt;
