Vor 90 Jahren - am 15. Februar 1936 - wurde der Mercedes-Benz 170 V der Öffentlichkeit präsentiert. Bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt hatten Autos der Ober- und Luxusklasse sowie erfolgsverwöhnte Rennwagen die Marke mit dem Stern geprägt. Doch erst mithilfe des kompakten und preisgünstigen 170 V gelang Mercedes-Benz der Durchbruch zum Großserienhersteller. Rasch stieg der populäre Wagen zum meistgebauten und kommerziell wichtigsten Modell der Daimler-Benz AG auf, ermöglichte nach kriegsbedingter Unterbrechung 1946 den Wiedereinstieg in die Pkw-Fertigung und war Basis für eine klassenübergreifende Typenfamilie, die erst 1955 abgelöst werden sollte. Erstmals wird die faszinierende Geschichte der Modelle 170 V - 170 S - 220 lückenlos erzählt, auch mit einem Blick auf nicht realisierte Nachfolgewagen. Dem Autor gelingt es dank umfassender Recherchen im originalen Quellenmaterial des Mercedes-Benz-Archivs, die komplexen Vorgänge der Projektierung, Konstruktion, Erprobung und Fertigung darzustellen und mit den verantwortlichen Personen und der Firmengeschichte zu verweben.
